Thanks for all the nice comments, though thanking tiamat21 for his comment makes me feel a bit sullied. 
need to get a new gfx card to replace my red-pcb sapphire 4850 to keep the pc components all-black, though I doubt nvidia would want to donate a card! I'll try and get all the components in and do thermal testing next time I have a week off to go back and get a good chunk of work done.
I've got some multi LED strip lighting (flexible pcb strip with 3xled/5cm) from mrdbristol's sponsors - supposed to be cold white. Hope they light evenlyand hopefully have the very slight blue-purple tinge to the white light... Going to be hidden in the aluminium upright leg (the one away from the copper wall, closest toyou when looking from the side where a window would be on a normal case). The idea of ditching an inverter box is appealing. I just hope they light as evenly as cold cathodes...
