Project: Measure twice cut once! (56k no!)

cheers dude!

right.. current outstanding issues..

1 small leak  I mean small, from the same place on the rad, I wrapped a tissue round it last night and it had about 3 or 4 drops on it this morning. Frustrating but I'm not going to pull it all to bits for that, the leak point is actually outside the pc anyway so I'm just going to live with it.

Video through kvm is awful so I'm going to disconnect the video and have one going in the dvi and one in the vga input on my monitor, plus point there is I can then do picture in picture which should be cool!

No lighting, kind of feeling the no lighting so it might stay that way.

Temps.. I think 45-50 idle would be a bit of a problem with air so with water I should be lower, load temps got up to 65 at the end of the 2 8mb runs last night so I was right to be concerned about the fan not being up to it, I think there might also be a potential seating issue with the wblock, going to tighten it tonight and see what happens. A 65 degree rad is an unpleasant thing. It'll actually be a heat source in the room at this rate!

Also the temps jump around a bit.. the loading went like 45-47-43-48-49-53-50-60-55-57 etc etc.. doesn't seem right.

yeah that was a thought, I did tilt it around with just the pump on the other day but I suppose a shake won't do it any harm. You reckon trapped air might be causing the temp probs?

deltas would be better.... :D

everyone goes on about panaflows dont they???

and, btw, how much has it all cost you in total then???

good god! 59dba! my ears will be bleeding!

And yes, panaflo also seem to be good but the noiseblockers look better..

cost? erm..

I reckon..

250 cpu
200 gfx
80 case
80 mobo
200 wcooling

the rest of it I had sat around anyway so it doesn't count :o

£810ish, no intention of keeping both PCs so one will go sooner or later.

If your rad is hot, then I doubt it is air in it. Try the bleed screw on the top if it is a thermochill (not sure)

I'd go for different fan config tbh.

In order of efficiency
Pull-pull (2 fans)
push-pull (2 fans)
pull (1 fan)
push (1 fan)

Your fan complete with grill on case will struggle to get enough pressure to force through rad. (no idea of rpm/cfm of the supplied fan)

As a first step you could try it on the outside and pulling through the rad. (no extra cost) and see what diff it makes.

pull pull? 2 fans in series you mean?

it has played on my mind that 1 rubbish fan pushing into a black ice extreme is a bad combination.. especially when that is the exhaust too so it's already got hot ambient air to contend with.

Might put a blowhole on the side to get rid of the mem/nb hot air before it hits the rad.

That's beautiful, nicely done mate. Can I ask where you got your desk from? My email is in trust or can you link since ocuk don't do furniture?

yep, the desk is here I had to chop it a bit to make it fit that alcove perfectly but once you get the modding bug ;) it's just what I wanted, plain, thick, solid wood with none of this nonsense of printer shelves and cd storage.

Wow you actually got it finished :D

Looks ace and I can't wait to do mine.

PS. First dibs on your old watercooling! I'd email, but it's borked at the moment.

thanks, and if you want dibs you'll be buying the lot because this baby isn't being split, at the very most it'll all go into a shuttle and stay on the desk.

And finally, on the fans.. just realised I've got 2 akasa ambers in my current pc that achieve virtually nothing so I'm going to nick them and stick them in push pull coming INTO the case, the psu can act as exhaust for the time being.

yay yay yay!

done the 2 x 120mm akasa amber mod with them on push pull INTO the case, it could be quieter but I think speedfan will sort that but the news!

Idle 35-38, full load (currently doing 2 8mb superpis) not even 50...

sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

matt is happy.. unbelievable that this has knocked over 15 degrees off the load temp!!!!

Another pleasant side effect is the blue led fan I was using is now in the front of my lian li where one of these akasas was and is giving it a mean blue glow through the front panel :D

I must love this.. I bought a psp today and haven't touched it

pull pull isn't a bad idea. Space is a bit of an issue but it always has been with this.

The only issue now is the fact that is warms up inside (as I expected having 2 fans in and nothing out.

I overclocked it to 3.3ghz and left it idling overnight, came down this morning and it was at 45ish on the cpu but the mobo was over 50 which I'm not happy with.

I'm guessing an exit blowhole is going to be the only option but I'd really rather not.

The other options is push pull the other way through the rad but that'll be back to the hot air cooling the rad problem...

Suggestions?

And next project?? fancy something in a shuttle but I'm so impressed with this cpu I might swap the mobo on my main pc to an sli pentium 830d dual 7800gtx setup.

I thought I could remove the floppy drive cover to have a bigger air inlet too?

Positive movement of air from front to back again although the drive is obviously above the mem and nb so I suppose there is the danger of the air just shooting through and missing the hot components?

PS. it's a pain in the ass getting the case off! it doesn't slide so it needs to be bent and cajoled into position.. not doing this too often, I'll have no fingers left!

Have you tried crunching on 1 core (prime, pi etc) and running games or 3mark on the other so that gfx is pumping into loop too.

Your load temps on 2 cases pi might be lower than 1 pi with 3d stuff. Just a thought.

bah!

don't say that!

I'll give it a try.. probably all at once again (swap fans, open case and run 3dm+superpi) haven't got the patience to try each in turn!

well I've finally done the pull pull, and it does seem happier.. idling at 38 on the cpu and 36 on the case...

going to leave it overnight and if its happy then its going to its new owner and I'm on the the next project!

Final update I guess...

I ran 3d mark 05 whilst doing an 8mb prime and the cpu went up to 60 and mobo 45 which I consider to be about as full load as I need to ensure it won't overheat.. Thats overclocked to 3.3ghz and after having run several primes so the water had gotten close to its natural heat (ie I wasn't benefiting from cool water).

I also left it on overnight and came down to find it at 41 idle cpu and 38 idle mobo, again, perfectly happy with that.

So I guess it's done.. Stick some photos in the case and watercooled gallery and thanks for all the input/help!

Daft ideas floating around at the moment are mounting a mac mini inside my current case.. Getting a G4 cube and putting a pc/mac mini inside it or just some normal stuff like a cpu/mobo upgrade on my current pc or making a shuttle.. I do like OSX though so it may well be mac based since I got rid of my ibook.

One thing this has proved is I want to have 2 pcs.. I managed to diagnose a network problem the other day only because I had a "spare" pc to test things with.

lol...

a month to put it together.. 2 hours to get it in bits again.. all cleaned up and on its way to the MM for sale

paying for a move to an amd x2 4400 and 2 7800gtxs in sli :D

another project on the way!

lol..

not duds, it was very quick but I've given up trying to convince myself that having some ddr2/more complicated overclocking is reason enough not to switch!

I nearly paid £500 for an fx55 about 6 months ago so the opportunity to have 2 in my pc (a 4400 generally goes to 2.5/2.6) is too good to miss.

i can't even afford a 754 sempron :( and you want 2 top of the range 939 cpu's????

*counts pennies

nearly a grands worth of cpu's there, you planning on running both alternatly ot buying 2 boards???

no you silly arse, I meant a dual core amd 64 running at 2.6ghz on each core with 1mb cache is effectively 2 fx55s stuck together :D

even I wouldn't pay £1000 for a cpu!
