Project Smurf

UPDATE!

So to my surprise this little lot arrived at the office today...

Bit busy this weekend which is annoying but i'm hoping to get cracking soon, i'll hopefully have time to post up a plan of the loop tomorrow for you all to tell me how i've got it totally wrong :)

Looking forward!

Which pump/res are you using?

So managed to get a few bits done today, I do have a hand drawn terrible plan of the loop which i'll mock up in photoshop once more bits are in. Really pleased with the colour match on the fittings from EK - so close to the RAM colour!

So far i've fitted one of the rads to the front of the case, nice fit loads of space in this case - I removed all drive bays at this point as I don't need them (SSDs only).

Fans supplied with the case are still mounted, I cannot find these online anywhere so any comments on them would be great (NZXT FN 2??).

So the 2nd rad is going in the top (also 360mm) but it occurred to me when I got it out the box and thought about how i'd mount it... I didn't buy any fans :D. So I've just ordered 4 x SP120's for monday deliver (1 spare because I might replace the rear exhaust fan that came with the case). The radiator will mount inside the chassis, the fans actually fit under the trim on the top side:

I kinda like that, allows me to put two of these giants in not sacrifice length - I tested the fans in position using an old 120mm and the casing fits over no problems.

Then I set about mounting the CPU block, bit tricky with the layout on the board around the screw points so i'll admit I had to use (tiny crappy) pliers to actually be able to tighten 2/4 of the threads. Good thing was one went in no issues (more space to grip) so I had a reference point to tighten the rest - I also used some tiny terrible pliers and didnt grip hard so as not to over tighten.

(note the crappy sketch loop in the background :) )

Thought I would show you how good the colour match to the RAM turned out to be... Then I notice some gunk in my fittings - what the hell is this crap EK?

After cleaning that out I screwed then in to test, and well it matched so well it could have been from the same kit!

That's all for now, stay tuned for more updates!

Updates! So I had a bit of time this evening and thought i'd get the pump and res sorted, obviously it was fiddly as hell but when is working in a case not? :)

So i've now got the pump mounted, its fixed to the drive bay mount and free standing above the case floor - presume this will not cause any issues (not sure how much the pump vibrates)? Should I add some support underneath?

Fixed to the case like so:

Fabricated a few brackets to mount the res in view of the window, I could have had it hidden above the pump but its a thing of beauty and I wanted it on show!

Res now stands in view, I'm not sure about these retaining clips... I feel like I want clear ones (maybe i'll look and swap them out) anyone know of better custom ones?:

When the case is put together it will look something like this:

Not sure what the purpose of the gaping hole in the foot of the case is (the one at the front right) but that crap has to go so more mods incoming!

More fans arriving tomorrow to mount the 2nd Rad then its pipe bending time!

Cheers

Dammit, I thought blue themed motherboards were getting old but this is coming along very nice. making me want to do a custom loop again but i'm finding it hard to justify the cost.

Back again, today I've got some more updates! Mostly good... Mostly!

So my fans arrived today which means I can get the 2nd rad in, I can tell you the tubing is going to be a bit of a pain but two 360mm rads fit pretty perfectly in this case. Its got more room than you would think for a mid tower.

Got 4 of these bad boys:

Its a bit sad but you won't see them at all as they sit above the inside of the case... You'll see in a minute. So then I got to sorting out the GPU block, after much ****ing about with small pads it was together and mounted in the case.

You'll notice two things about this picture. 1. That rear fan looks ridiculous, bye bye fan - good job I had 4 of the SP120s so 1 spare... 2. I'm an idiot. Notice the lack of reservoir, like a tired fool I picked up the wrong EVGA card when I mounted it... Basically it doesnt fit :D.

BUT, lets just take a look at this GPU porn again to cheer ourselves up, man this thing looks nice:

I'm really REALLY sad I don't have two in there but at this point I just can't justify the cost while I wait for the next gen cards to come out, two would look so nice:

(Yes I have cool socks)

So basically i'm now in a bit of a dilemma, what to do with the res... I can obviously mount it behind the right hand panels but I still really fancied having it in view. My two alternatives are:

  1. Get a smaller one and mount it as planned, higher up above the GPU
  2. Mount it horizontal at the top, it can be mounted quite easily to the rad in the roof of the case but this looks like a total nightmare to fill... Any tips, is this even possible? See pic below:

Thoughts welcome... Cheers!

Actually did cross my mind to cut out a channel and mount it like that... But basically I know i'll just destroy the case :)

Yeah, I'm with you on that one. To avoid cutting and ruining my In Win 901 I'm laser cutting panels to rebuild 2/3 of the case internals to how I want it :D much easier because I have no balls when it comes to cutting a £80 case lol

How the hell do you do that then?! I think what I might do is mount it behind until I can sort out a better alternative... Need to fire this beast up and get it going!

and by £80 case I mean £130 case that I got on a good deal - if it was only £80 to replace I'd just cut the damn thing as that's cheaper than my laser cutting lol

I'm paying a local fabricator to cut 1.5mm thick aluminium based on my CAD drawings, and then bending it myself in my DIY (and yet to be built) sheet metal bender. There will be a full project log once I get going properly - need to buy in a few parts to finish my measurements before I can get all the CAD work done.

It would be a shame to hide your tube res, but I guess as you've said bolt it in the drive bays you've cleared for now and think of something else later. Good job overall though.
