Protecting the top of a computer desk

I did use the boogie XL mouse mat, its so big it covered my whole desk and was a great mat too, worked great for protecting the surface.

Some of my customers have these large transparent plastic sheets they put on their desks then put documents underneath it that they regularly make reference to. Not sure where they get them from.

glass was a serious suggestoin. i don't see the point in getting a desk you like the look of to cover it up. glass you could get cut to size and then you'll still see the desk and can replace the glass once it gets scratched up.

Not being funny or owt, but it's a £60 IKEA desk, is it really worth going to the expense and hassle of buying something else to protect it? I dropped something like £170 on my desk from IKEA (£40 for the two storage units, £90 for the glass desktop iirc) and have had no compulsion to do more than polish the glass when it looks a little dirty...
