As mentioned in the Playstation Classic thread, where I had one on pre-order, I was talking it over with a friend who suggested just getting a PS2 instead and grab the games you want for a fraction of the price. After seeing the full game list I cancelled the order and started looking around on ebay to see what I could get.

I was after a later version in decent condition and ideally the silver edition as I think it looks better than black and is a bit more rare. After some searching I eventually picked one up which was in pretty good shape - there are some complete dogs out there, most look like someone has taken sandpaper to the top.

So this is what I got for £39 inc delivery:

PS2 Slim Silver, the last revision with the Sony remote, power pack, PS2 to RGB cable. Condition wise its very good. A few small marks which should clean up but generally tidy all round :) Also.. this thing is tiny!

Oh and it came with a bunch of games:

Excellent, onto testing... this is where the problems began :( Some of the games wouldn't load but the condition of the all the game discs are excellent, so it looks like a problem with the laser. It looks fairly easy to replace at a cost of £10 but first will just try taking the case off and cleaning it up inside. Secondly the left analogue stick seems to be stuck on. It feels fine but every game was flicking around the menu really quick and it only slowed down if you moved that stick against it. Again I will take it apart and post up the results. I wanted another controller so have one which works fine and also confirmed it before that using just the remote to control the PS2 without the original controller in.

I spoke to the seller and due to this agreed £16 back as it clearly wasn't in full working order. So total spend for the above is just £23 :) I didn't really want a project but looks like I have one now :p

Additions spent so far (inc del):
Second controller @ £10
Original 8MB memory card @ £2
GT4 @ £4
Wipeout Fusion @ £2

I also found a better monitor/TV to play this and the Amiga on. Originally I had the 15" LCD as per my Amiga thread but found locally on Gumtree an immaculate Samsung Syncmaster 17" LCD for just £10!

Quite a nice improvement and still the same size overall

So over the next week or so I will be taking the PS2 and controller apart and will post my findings. I've never owned a PS2 (or PS1) before never mind taking one apart so will be interesting :)

Any other PS2 fat/slim owners out there?

The PS2 is a fantastic system with such a vast diverse library! I pick games up for mine from time to time because the prices are too tempting ;) wish I had more time to set aside to play it, I do intend to.

I played through Silent Hill 2 and The Suffering both for the first time early this year, both great and a few janky control issues aside they have aged pretty well. Silent hill 2 is amazing, I wish I played it at the time. It then forced me to pick 3 and 4 up, awaiting to be played

Finding myself in a similar boat (cancelling my Ps1 pre-order and purchasing a Ps2) I'm interested to see how you get on with the laser. Concerned about this I ended up with a factory box sealed PS2 slim, but I've dithered on opening it and ended up with also getting a PS2 fat. I haven't had time to try this properly yet.

Ive also lost my marbles and bought another PS3 slim. So i think im going to be good for retro ganing for the foreseeable.

I took the controller apart but had no joy so ordered another original controller instead. I think the optical laser is working okay but will run through all the games again and see.

Got Tekken Tag Tournament on the way. Any other suggestions? Was thinking of Crash Bandicoot.

The earlier Tony Hawk's games are really good fun (all of them up to 4 are excellent), Gran Tourismo is a must, trying to think of all the games I played on mine back in the day

Best console of all time! There are some really good games for PS2, and then you have the whole PS1 library at your disposal as well. I replayed Legacy Of Kain Defiance about 2 years ago on mine and over component cable on an HDTV it actually looked really good considering its age! I'd recommend it if you like a hacky-slashy type game with some minor puzzles.

Get Forbidden Siren it's amazing!

Regarding the controller error, have you tried lots of rotations of the analog in both directions? That often cures the problem.

I used to get sent abroad a few times with an old company, clients or foreign colleagues didn't want to socialise every night (especially mid week) so I used to bring a slim PS2 with me to plug into the TV in my hotel room (well at least in Europe).

I mostly bought the thing just to play GTA San Andreas, likewise I bought a PS3 because of GTA IV (then later got red dead and GTA V)

I'm a big fan of Rockstar Games, used to play GTA, GTA London, GTA2, GTA3 etc.. on the PC - they came out with another quite neat game for the PS2 - Bully/Canis Canem Edit - its worth a punt IMO - sort of GTA but set in a New England boarding school and the surrounding town:

I recently did something similar, although I went for the original fat version in black. Decided to get all of the Gran Turismo games and Metal Gear solids I could get my hands on, and will go from there. Likely once I've spent a lot!

If only I had kept everything.. :(

GT games are super cheap, they sold in the millions so shouldn't have trouble finding them ;)

@Duke do your flat panel TVs have VGA input too? I've been thinking of getting something similar for my PS2 and it could replace my vga monitor too (hopefully). Are they native 640*480 (yay playstation) or 1024*768 (yay PC). I assume theyre progressive scan 60Hz too due to the tech?

I ditched the Dual branded one as it was a pile of poo so just using the Samsung SyncMaster 741MP. It has VGA :)

Full spec is here although it doesn't mention SCART for some reason - https://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-syncmaster-741mp-lcd-monitor-with-tv-tuner-17/
