anyone have any tips for streaming HD x264 encoded movies to the PS3? I thought that the latest firmware supported x264 but my PS3 doesn't seem to recognise the format. Do I need to change the codec?

I presume you've got Matroska MKV files? They'll have to be converted to VOB (using MKV2VOB) or streamed with TVersity.

TVersity converts on the fly doesn't it? Are there any settings I need to make this happen or does it "just work"?

I'd recommend downloading MKV2VOB.

All the MKV files I've fed it so far have required no transcoding, therefore no loss of quality.

You literally feed in a source file, and in seconds, it's output it as an .mp4 file which the PS3 can play. No loss of quality, like you'd get with TVersity.

The only downside is that I can't seem to fast forward to rewind large .mp4 files. But the upside, being able to play the .mkv file with no loss of quality, and it retains any 5.1 soundtrack the file may have, far outweighs the cons.

MKV2VOB is a freeware program, easily findable via google.

"only" got a 37" plasma so 1080P is a bit pointless anyway even if it can handle the input.
Are the 85Mbps homeplugs fast enough to handle 720P x264 files or am I better spending more and getting the 200Mbps ones? Wireless just ain't cutting it unless I'm streaming mp3's or low quality divx.

720p seems to run fine via wireless for me, although in some scenes with a lot of panning and foliage, it can get really choppy. I don't think it's a bandwidth issue though as the same thing happens when I use a wired connection.
The vast majority of stuff plays without issue or choppiness though.

I just use mkv2vob and then copy it over to the PS3's HDD using a DVD or DL DVD - you need to copy it from the DVD to the PS3's HDD though or it will be really choppy! Works a treat and I have stacks of room now I have just upgraded my PS3 HDD again to 250gig :D

You waste a disc every time you want to watch a film, or do you just use a re-writeable?

Personally I use streaming from my PC, but at worst I'd just bang them on a memory stick. I did once use a DVD with the file on to play it though, and it wasn't choppy at all

Sorry to hijack the thread but what advantages has Tversity over WMP11.

For the moment I just use WMP11 however I notice that most of my files aren't recognised, I presume this is because they aren't in PS3 codec format. Is there an app than can covert all types of files to PS3 playable ones, and not just MKV?

i used to do similar, and they watched fine from the DVD?

Now i use mkv2vob, get it to chop at <4GB (FAT32 limitation for external drive) watch from there.

Its great, i use the HDD i took out of my PS3 after upgrading it.

As for streaming i have NEVER gotten it to work on my Vista system to the PS3 - just will not work.

Works fine for me using Vista Home Premium x64.
I did have an issue once when I installed a Nero package, it seemed to screw up my TVersity connection completely, was fine after I did a system restore.
I get the feeling Nero's media server program thingy was causing some sort of conflict. I tried uninstalling, but the problem persisted, so I resorted to the system restore.

downloaded MKV2VOB to give it a try. Any preference on which output extension to use and the transcoding codec for x264 .mkv files?
Why does it seem to want to re-encode the DTS audio to AC3? PS3's can handle DTS.

i generally use .vob, as the PS3 never used to be able to do 5.1 with mp4

as for audio, i let it do its thing, 8/10 times it works fine, in surround

if the new mkv2vob doesnt work, try an older version? if not there are others available, but dont recall what they are.

It should 'just work', although 1080p is out of the question for transcoding.

Nope your wrong. 1080p Level 4.1 encoded x264s remux fine. 4.1 are found on blu-rays / hd-dvds and are appearing pretty common now as people are finally realising level 5.1 for 1080p is stupid and makes no difference whatsoever,

MKV2VOB takes too long imo specially if you doing hd stuff.

really? do you set it to transcode or not?

obviously some cannot be transcoded and will take longer, but never THAT long (few hours, tops)

ok I've converted one movie into .vob using MKV2VOB but the PS3 doesn't even see it on the media server. Do I only use .vob if I'm copying the file to disk?
