I thought it was confirmed the UK won't get the cheaper model?

Steady sales on day one, with increased demand expected.
UK, March 23, 2007 - Although the PS3 launch hasn't been the mad scramble we saw when Wii was released, retailers in central London are reporting steady sales on the first day of the console's availability in Europe, with some anticipating a sell out over the weekend.
We spoke to high street stores this morning to see how the PlayStation 3 launch was going and most reported a quiet start with sales expected to pick up tomorrow. **cough** in Oxford Street told us that 42 consoles had been sold in about five hours, following a 7am opening. However when asked whether stock might sell out by the end of the day, a representative told us, "We'll just have to see how busy it gets. We've had 100 pre-orders but we've got more units than that for sale in the store".
Meanwhile Tina Kara, manager of the Hamley's branch of **cough**, said the store had sold 20 consoles in just over an hour: "This is the biggest launch ever. We've been so busy in the run-up and we expect to sell out by Monday." However, Kara also admitted that more people were still popping into the store, inquiring about Wiis.
"We get a lot of non-gamers asking about the Wii but we just don't have the stock. The PS3 is much better than the Wii but it appeals more to people that love gadgets and technology," she suggested.
Things were also going well at **cough** Megastore's Picadilly Circus branch. While the store didn't hold a glitzy launch night, plenty of PS3s were still ringing through the tills. In fact, a spokesman told us that so many were being sold the store didn't expect consoles to still be available by the end of play today.
So, if you still haven't snapped up a PS3 yet, you probably need to act quickly if you don't want to miss out.
Now that's better pricing, imo... what else does the 20GB version lack apart from the 40GB disk space? I guess it's not just the additional disk space that justifies the extra £125 in price.Bigpig said:"Sony will indeed offer both the 20GB and 60GB versions of the PlayStation 3 in the UK, it appears. Despite earlier claims only the pricey 60GB model will be made available over here, Amazon.co.uk has begun listing the 20GB veraion too, though it's giving away no pricing or availability details.
And the official Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) PS3 website, which went live this week, shows both models in the UK section and details the two versions' specifications."
It's also on the Bristish PS3 Site. The price tag will be around 300 pounds

I'm at work so can't browse Sony's website myself.![]()

The Bluray drive itself will ensure that the unit won't be anything like that price for at least 2-3 years.

I think that they over estimated the demand at the price point, they may have expected consumers to compare like with like (HDD size, Wifi, HDMI, Bluray) instead of bottom line prices.
I want PS3 to sell well and succeed.
I want 360 to sell well and succeed.
I want Wii to sell well and succeed.
The more competition the better, the higher the standard of the competition the better and for us as consumers it means more choice, cheaper prices and better games.
Sony could not win here though. If the stocks were limted then there would be cries of "they've had a year to get stocks there is no reason why stocks are low" and if stocks were high then "hahaha they aren't selling".
From a pure financial point of view I think they overestimated initial demand and set the price too high. I am more likely to get a second 360 than a PS3 at the moment.
