PS3 Fans kicking in?

Ok another update, Sony picked up my PS3 the other day and replaced it with a refurbished/reconditioned one. I checked it before accepting and it was all in good shape, now the important part, it's silent :) I have to put my ear to it to hear anything when on the dashboard and when gaming/upscaling DVDs i can hear the faint noise of air being pushed out from around 2ft away if the TV volume is off, otherwise I wouldn't know it was there. I'm guessing that this is the way they are supposed to be.

Chuffed :)

mine only gets noisy when i have the dvds on mainly, very rarely for games(except sonic)

can i buy one of those cans off amazon that come with air to blow out all the dust? done it b4 and it seemed to help for awhile.

Mine has just started doing it (I've had my 40gb PS3 for a couple of years!) and its really annoying!!

I've tried directing a desk fan directly at it which doesnt seem to help and I've also tried propping the machine up on a couple of rolls of selotape to improve the ventilation - no good either!!!

Mine only seems to kick in when I'm playing FIFA World Cup for some reason!?!?!?!?

The fan on my refurbished 60GB is different than my first one, this one starts silent, after ~4 minutes of gaming it ramps up to quiet mode and straight away to noisy mode and straight away to full out noise(sounds like a hoover), after doing that for ~20 seconds the fan slows down again to quiet mode.

My first PS3 was noisy from the start and never went down in noise.

My old 60gig sounds like a plane taking off after an hour or so of blu-ray watching. It's in a relatively combine space but even so it shouldn't be that loud! From 13 feet away I can here it over quiet scenes.

my 60GB fans would go up to level 3 even when its idling after being switch on for 15mins, it then YLOD it last week.

anyways I fixed the YLOD, used MX2, cut a 120mm hole where the fan is and also brought a PS3 cooler for the front intake and now the fans no longer increase when idling, only when gaming.
