PS3 HDD replacement - u done yours?

Changed mine to a 160Gb a month or so after i got my 60Gb in march last year. Its very easy to do TBH just make sure you have the correct tools as some of the screws can be a bit tight.
That drive looks like it would be fine but of my 160 Gb i still have 100Gb left and thats with some music/ videos PSN games and demos, Plus a few game installs so it may not be needed but its useful. With play TV out in the spring (dual HD tuner) so you can use the PS3 as a PVR then the larger the HDD the better IMO. I may wait and see how much i can get a 250+ one in the next few months, as someone else wants my drive for there laptop.

I'm considering changing mine when I'm feeling a little more affluent. When I realised that I only had about 3 gig left in my release day 60gig, it kinda made me yearn for more space... ;)

I'm tempted as well. The crazy thing is I can rip apart PCs/Servers and otehr stuff, but knowing my luck it will go pete tong and I will knacker my 60gb unit, which I would only get a refurb unit back for :(

I'm sure I'll impulse purchase one in the near future though (250GB drive seems quite cheap).

I did mine as well so have a 160GB. I only had 15GB left the other day when I looked though so had to delete old demos & trailers etc to make room. Still only got 30GB left - as soon as you start putting HD video on there you can run out of room dead quick!

ill probably go 250 or 320 as i will wanna install linux on it to for an ultimate cheap blu-ray/gaming console/workstation.

This PS3 is a real bargin!!

Can you play movies (x264, avi, wmv etc) in HD under Linux on the PS3 as well as Blu-ray?

I dont own a PS3 yet, but will be getting one in a few weeks.

Just wanted to know has anyone upgraded there HDD in there 40gb PS3 model?

Out of interest is it needed to get a bigger HDD? is 40GB not enough?

Would it take a 250GB 2.5" 8mb catch 5400rpm like this one:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-052-SA

is 250GB overkill? Would 120GB be more sensible?

By the way, some reviews on competitor websites imply that that particular drive makes clicking sounds. No idea personally if this is true, just saying.

Well I run linux on my desktop. avi, wmv divx all play fine. I assume x264 does, i dont have any content of that type. Blu-ray/HD last time I checked was a real pain on linux ocs of DRM.

I think you can watch ** HD/BD but u have to rip them to ** HDD in linux. Curse DRM to hell!!! This is y i aint tried MythTV on my HTPC. Need the blu-ray/HD-DVD to work flawlessly and last time I checked linux cant cos of DRM issues. Maybe times have changed but i aint checked for months

ah thanks for looking, was using that sammy drive as an example. Will probably get a Seagate out of choice.

You can play HD movies directly from the XMB, so no need to even use Linux.

So say if you download HD preview trailers and copy them to a DVD-R, can you just pop it in the PS3 and it will work right away and play fine?

EDIT: Or even connect the PS3 to my router and copy the HD trailers from my PC upstairs, directly onto the PS3 hard-drive downstairs at the HDTV? Or do you stream it from the PC upstairs to the PS3 via the router?

as long as it's a supported format and codec yes. If it isn't then there's software you can use for converting etc. I would use an external HDD or USB drive rather than burning to disc though.

DiVX will play from external drive etc but XViD you need to copy to the PS3's HDD to play it.

So i can just buy an external hard drive, download some HD 'trailers', put them on the external hard drive, plug the hard drive into the PS3 and play it right of it? Sounds very good to me

Also, what is the most common HD format/codec?
