PS3 HDD upgrade recommendations please...

Has anyone got any experience with any of these 2 specific drives, or perhaps lower capacity models of the same drive?

320GB Western Digital WD3200BEVT Scorpio, 2.5", SATA II, 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms £69.59 £81.77
320GB Samsung HM320JI Spinpoint M60, 2.5", SATA I, 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms £65.60 £77.08

I need to upgrade my HDD soon and I don't really buy Hard Drives often enough to have a particular favourite brand/model/series.

what do u do with the data on your current disk can to transfer it across like on the 360 ???

I would imagine they are all much of a muchness tbh, but I have just popped a 250GB Samsung SP in mine. Wasn't looking for any particular make or model though, it was just there so I ordered it!

As far as i can tell, both are reliable (not heard of either brand failing, nor had either fail on me). However, Samsungs seem to be quieter... if that really matters to you (WDs are very quiet, its just that samsungs are pretty much silent)

Does PS3 use SATA-II, if so that choice in the OP is easy!

I don't think it does but I think it would still work in the ps3. You would not see any speed increase in SATA in a notebook device. They are the really slow end of HDDs in general.

You use a USB device (pendrive or HDD) connected to your existing ps3, run the built in "bakup" tool, swap HDD, run the "restore". easy by all accounts (I hope!!)

Did a backup as I have a 250GB Freecom external drive. Although for some reason the PS3 only recognised it as 54GB so I had to delete a load of stuff before backing up - took bleeding ages

yeah they will, although game saves may need to be "copied"?
