PS3 HDD upgrade recommendations please...

i'm guessing the main problem with going for a 7200 HDD is possible overheating?

benefits include a tad quicker loading times and such

I've heard there's problem's with some thing to do with confusion about unexpected writing times within games or something, but then again I can't remember where I read it or whether it was reliable or not.

I'm not too fussed about the write time and wouldn't mind keeping the noise down (although I don't think I'd notice the difference), so I'm happy saving a few quid and going with a brand I've used before.

Let us know how you get on please!

I'm quite interested to see if there are actual problems with them or if it is just rumours.

I've done quite a bit of reading into this, i've only ever seen people warning you of problems, never anyone actually complaining of any. As well as that i've seen a comparison list made by someone who took the plunge, load times were cut by around 10% in ninja gaiden sigma and install times for demos were cut by around 20%, he didn't complain of any problems, i'll have a look around and see if i can find the post.

The things i'd check if i was replacing the drive in mine, would be the comparisons compared to the existing drive. In things like power draw, average temperature, tollerances, ect;

ps3 doesnt recognize sata 2 right? whats the score with SATA 150, 300 etc? I'm a HDD newbie.
Still looking for the best (and largest) 2.5 SATA 7200 rpm drive.

All SATA stuff should not make a difference. There is no way a laptop 2.5 HDD spinning at 5400 or 7200 or with amazing sepeeds could ever match SATA throughput.

Just hype tbh.

Just buy the cheapest SATA(1) drive you can get obviously 5400rpm drives will be cheaper. Some people say you will see faster loading times from a 7200rpm drive, others disagree.

I installed a 320GB SATA1 5400rpm drive and it works fine.

you can use pretty much any sata drive you like. if you are cautious, stick to 5400rpm (tosh if you ask me) but other than that, its all good. there are some drive that are apperntly too wide to fit the ps3 (or is it too thick? you'll have to check that). thats it really.

i do it hardcore though.got me a 250gb full fat 3.5" 7200rpm drive in caddy for mine. ~%10 faster all round (shorter install times, games that stream may well play better ect). oh and best of all, for all those who are anal about the temperature increase when using a 7200 rpm drive......my ps3 runs cooler than yours because mine has no internal drive. stitch that Jimmy :p oh and my drives are cheaper to buy.

Do you have the sata cable dangling out of the side of the PS3 ?

james, surely having the drive externally in a nexstar 3 will make it a lot louder? it tends to vibrate quite loudly when sitting on my desk...and it gets really warm!

Can someone help me -

If i get a 120GB 2.5" USB HARD DRIVE, USB2.0, SELF POWERED and advertised as working with the PS3 and then make a backup onto it of the PS3 HDD, can i then plug that into my PC and transfer the image or whatever it creates to my PC?

Then take out the 120gig 2.5 from caddy put it into ps3 and format it as my new PS3 HDD (advertised as fitting)

then take the orginal 60gig from PS3 and put into the caddy then back onto PC (be seen by PC?) and then transfer the image back from PC to the 60gig then use that to restore my ps3?

abit long winded but don't want to get another sata HDD if i can use the PS3 orginal, as i can get the caddy and HDD for £45

Should work in theory as they are just flat files in a FAT32 file system. If you want to be certain use Ghost to backup the drives on your PC in case it goes pete tong.

Main issue will be, is this just a caddy with a normal 2.5" drive in it with a generic controller or is a branded one like Iomega/Laie etc that is not menat to be pulled apart? Some of those use proprietry chipsets so you can't just plonk any other drive (ie the 60gb from your ps3).

ill see if i can throw some sort of guide together, guys. the hardest bit was cutting a hole in the base in the right places and i did that by a bit of trial and error. but ill see what i can do:p

Naan_H - nope. the seek is a little louder, but you cant hear it spinning. the seek from the drive is deeper and more 'pc-like' but it really makes very little difference:)

Fair enough mate, might give it a try myself...gotta say, the nexstar 3 is the perfect caddy to accompany the ps3! They were made for each other lol
