ps3 is dead - anybody else had any probs with their's

my ps3 has just died - think its the laser as it wont read any games or dvds. anybody else had any probs with theirs and had to get sony to repair or replace it under warranty?

Yep, laser fault is a common problem. Out of interest, is it the 40gb or 60gb model?

Phone Sony and they will send a replacement model out and pick your nadgered one up at the same time.

well the things is its an 80gb import from Hong Kong

its only 4 months old

I'm pretty sure you won't be covered by the warranty, that's the downside of importing.

Definitely worth ringing them and trying though.

I don't think it is international. Is the 80gb built on the same cheap parts as the 40gb?

not sure about the parts in it - im sure its very similar to the 60gb with the memory ports and bits on the front. will contact sony later and see what they say

My friends laser died on his too, luckily he got it from a competitor so they just swapped it straight away.

Is the PS3's dead laser gonna be their RROD ?

My mate is on his 3rd PS3 in 3 weeks. Every time it's the laser issue.

What the hell happened to build quality these days.

When I bought a Playstation 1 Xmas 1995 it lasted 9 years.
I bought my PS2 in 2002 and it's never had a problem and still works fine.

My 11year old n64 which has been thrown everywhere still works.

Althought I dont know how well the batteries in the cartridges have lasted. My saved games!!!

fingers crossed they change it - build quality on them seems to be rubbish these days

Yep - thats how the games were saved. The booklet warns they only expect them to last 5-6 years. I remember being worried that all my progress would be gone at the time. Obviously I no longer care

Seems to be rearing its ugly head much like the PS2 disk read error i wonder why its happening so frequent. :/

Unfortunatly its a risk you take when importing. I was looking to do the same so I could play region A blu-rays but chose against it due to the possible warranty issues. If it is the laser will they replace the whole drive? Which would mean it would need to be from a HK machine due to region coding, right? Its a shame its broken so soon but hopefully they will sort something for you
