PS3 Launch news at midnight

Well it's not really anything we didn't know already, I was hoping for a surprise of some sort. I still think Sony will have to re-think their pricing sooner rather than later. They have lost a customer in me because I can't afford the kind of money needed to buy one at the currrent price, not to mention the launch games line-up is IMO quite poor, there are no games I want from that list. I imagine there will be thousands of people in the same situation as me. Shame as I had both a PS1 and PS2 and have a ton of other Sony products.

Nothing there to tempt me to buy a PS3 yet.

It would be an impressive launch line up if the majority of those games weren't out already on other formats and the only game I remotely fancy trying is Resistance: Fall of Man.

Kinda expensive but the price doesn't come as any shock as we all knew what it was going to be anyway.

Are any of those games being released at the same time as the Europe release or are they all out already in Japan / US or due soon?

Edit: Of course, if you don't have a 360 and have been waiting for a PS3 there's plenty of games to keep you busy there.

Excellent :D

So lets see:

Launch Prices:
XBox 360;
£280
Includes:
XBox 360 Premium
20GB HD
Component Cable
1*Controller
1*Game
Power Block & Cables

PS3;
£425
Includes:
Playstation 3
60GB HD
Comp Cable
1*Controller
1*Game
Cables
Blu-Ray Hi-Def Player...

So to compare:
PS3 you get a hi def capable player straight from the word go... as opposed to having to spend another £130 (COMPETITOR LINK NOT INCLUDED) to get it towards Hi-Def player.... so thats £400 ... so for another £25 i'd rather enjoy a bit of silence plus FREE online gaming that won't cost me £15 a year/£35 (Gold iirc will stand corrected) to play on live...

I have a 360 but this PS3 at that price for the option of going straight into Hi-Def .... "tastebuds... tingle"

Alls i can say at this point is.. 1million available at Launch in EU... well done Sony keep it up (/fanboy)

Btw does anyone know if Gears of War for PS3 would be possible as i have a mate who says the PS3 can't handle Gears of War :s *confuzzled*

Kinda spoils the fun really. Yes loads of games are available at launch, but a fair chunk are already availalbe. Its one thing if they are out on the PC aswell, but another if they are out at a cheaper price on a cheaper console.

I think a lot hinges on Motostorm. Its fairly original for a racing game, and looks awesome. I'm sure its top of the list for many people.

The only other thing to consider, is what games are coming out on the 360 before the end of March. A quick check shows:

Crackdown
GRAW2
Forza 2
C&C3
Mass Effect

(Some of those are out the week after the PS3 but its still March and only a week :p)

I'd rather pay the extra and have Live than what the PS3 offers right now. Hopefully in the future they can integrate their online experience into the system / games as well as MS have done with Live.

Well no surprises in the announcement then.

I'll be surprised if they do keep it at £425 until June 2008.

I'll wait til Heavenly Sword, FFXIII, MGS4 and GT5 is released which should be after June 2008 anyway :p :D

Thing is though, i pay for live and use the features that the PS3 offers for free. I don't really care about most of the stuff with live. All i really care about is a friends list and multiplayer gaming.
And if that is all you want then the PS3 does the job, although they do need to get the in game chat sorted, but i have no doubt that will be fixed before the Euro launch. As they have now fixed the backwards compatibility issue, which was a big thorn in their side.

Fair enough, you know better than me how the PS3 works :p

This whole business with different friends lists, sending message from within games and stuff was what was worrying me about their online service.

I will admit I don't really know enough about how it works and am just going from things I've read in the past.

i agree LIVE isnt a big draw for me. i use it to play people online and download game demos...

I also am really looking forward to resistance - i think its a very underrated game, and friends i have in the states (360/GOW owners) are say resistance is ONE of the best FPS' they've ever played. So i think Resistance and motorstorm are pushing the "might consider buying" feeling for me right now, tho with a 360 and wii already, doubt i'll get a launch machine - might be a nice birthday pressie in sept, or xmas pressie probably

Well with the PS3 you do get your comunal friends list on the 'Dashboard'
But some games give you another friends list in the game. Which some feel isn't a bad thing, as you may have a group of people you only play RFOM with and nothing else, so it wont clutter up your main list if you don't want to put them on there.
I do think that is isn't perfect by any means. But if all you want to do is play some multiplayer matches, and it has a comunal friends list, then it fits that bill. And if all you want to do is the same on live, it isn't really worth the 40 quid, with the amount of people you hear about wanting to play games like Pro Evo and it is just a lag fest.
Sure if you want to send messages cross game etc that isn't on the PS3, but i think it will be. But at the same time, it stops Krono spaming you to play GoW when you have just switched on another game for a session :p

Not particularly interested by those launch games. Not interested in an of the exclusive ones. All the others I could get on PC or 360.

Sony Says No PS3 Price Drop before June 2008:

Sony Computer Entertainment America chief Jack Tretton stated on the record that there will be no price-drop for the PlayStation 3 until June 2008 at the very least.

This comes out of an interview he had with Game Informer magazine when he was asked if the price drop for the PS3 would be “as soon or as drastic as they were for the PlayStation 2.” He replied with a very clear answer stating, “No.”
Just a quick note on this - you wouldn't really expect them to say right now that there's a chance they might cut the price in six months since it'd hit their sales. Everyone would just wait. Chances are there will be a price cut of some sort between now and June 2008. Really can't see it going into next christmas still at £425.

If I was going to buy a PS3 (no reason to yet, no decent games, decent BR films not out till the summer), I'd get a Japanese import.

At least 30% cheaper including shipping & taxes, and it'll play US region BR discs, which are far cheaper..

Price is as expected then. I'm fairly tempted to buy one as given it seems it can run full versions of linux, I assume its only a matter of time before it can be turned into a full media centre, which will save me having to build a htpc, and be cheaper as well.

Launch lineup doesn't look too bad. Being the last of the next gen consoles, i expected a lot of the games to be multiformats. Guess the real exclusives will come in a year or so, similar to the the 360.

Nah get a US one, the JAP one takes some violence out of some of the games apparently
