You know what, I'd rather have the choice of buying a HD-DVD player. Also you know another thing...I'd rather pay for live than have that **** excuse for a live service which sony uses (as documented by evey industry professional).

add ons for a doomed format are cool

what would stop anybody (no MS themselves maybe but a third party developer)releasing a USB blu-ray drive for the 360 like the usb HD DVD so depending on which format wins the war you are always a winner

As opposed to an obligatory inclusion of a doomed format???

Even if HD-DVD does turn out to be a doomed format, in a couple of years you'll be able to pick up a standalone Blu-Ray drive for £20 at your local supermarket like you can do for a DVD player currently.

I don't know if the majority of 360 owners will be buying the HD-DVD drive straight away - they may choose to hold off to see if there is gonna be only one winner in the format war, in which case they've saved themselves £130 if HD-DVD does turn out to be a "doomed format" (© johnnyfive).

If, on the other hand, Blu-Ray turns out to be a doomed format, as you put it, then the PS3 owners won't have had the option of not buying the Blu-Ray drive. One could argue that Blu-Ray is a requirement for the size of PS3 games, but from what I've seen, the 360 games are comparable and don't require a next-gen disc format.

One thing that is to the PS3's advantage is that the Blu-Ray drive is internal so looks less "cluttered" than a 360 with external HD-DVD drive. From an aesthetical viewpoint, the PS3 has the advantage - and the George Foreman style of the console is actually starting to grow on me!

If PS3 doesn't have a blu-ray then it would have (should have) been much cheaper.

Movies for blu-ray is hardly out and you would probably get a poor line-up of movies especially that DVD market hits a sweet spot & you can get DVD player at Tesco for £18! (Even cheaper than Blu-ray movie?!)

It doesn't benefit games at all, especially that it's slower than DVD drive so developers would be struggling get amount out of Blu-ray in reasonable time! It means a longer loading time!

All of this is so unnecessary but then, knowing Sony, they have pushed their luck too hard with their format!

Not particularly interested by those launch games. Not interested in an of the exclusive ones. All the others I could get on PC or 360.

I don't understand this mentality from most of you. Coming from someone that does not have a 360 or a gaming PC, that is a highly desirable load of games, by far supassing the xbox360 launch and certaintly the wii launch. The arguement that the games are available on xbox 360 is only applicable if you own an Xbox 360. For those that have been waiting for their ps3 and will get one reguardless of cost over the xbox 360, that is a great selection of games.

I want an xbox 360, for the record.

Also i'll just say that much of what ive read on here... the PS3 is this it can't do that... this is crap on it because these people say so... as far as i'm concerned when i get one if its good i'll say so, if its crap i'll be honest and admit it, its just the fact that 99% of the people criticising it on here havent been within 100feet of a PS3 and are relying on 2nd hand information...

I wasn't someone who bashed the 360 although i will say its power block is enormouse and if it had been built in as per the PS3 the two would be very close in size

Blu ray will benefit games. Read up on oblivion for the PS3. It will explain, Yes this is a work around to allow Oblivion to run nicely on the PS3.

But imagine implimenting the same method onto newer larger games.

Also, a lot of people say bluray is a waste due to games being streamed in the future.

Well what about having a Bluray disk, Full of uncompressed textures and Movies, and then still streaming content too.

I really dont see how bluray is wasted technology. It's BS.

Its a larger capacity disk than DVD9, with slower read speeds yes, But the Double Data method can speed up that problem, Along with the options of installing content to the hard drive from the Bluray disk and streaming content.

Ah then you will be glad to know I have not only been within 100 feet, I have actually played on the PS3.
You will note my main grevences against it are the price, the marketing (lies), disjointed online system and the fact that it claimes to be a HD console out of the box, when it comes with COMPOSITE cables which are not capable of HD resolutions. (and look **** at SD too).

I have never said that as a games console it will be rubbish, but I do think the 360 has more to offer

But a lot of people who will be buying a PS3, probably didn't/don't own a 360. So they are getting a chance to play the games.

Yep my brother in law has been telling me his son is getting slaughtered by kids at school for having a 360. They are telling him he has a rubbish console and when the ps3 comes out its a gazillion times better.

My brother in law was asking me if he had bought the wrong console.

His school is full of kids waiting, whose parents will have kids telling them to wait for the ps3.

Yep its no real improvement , its more expensive, but little timmy wants a sony. Little timmy gets what little timmy wants. They dont care if you can already buy COD or whatever on the 360. They dont want a 360.

You lot are deluding yourself, sony will win. Local gameshops are full of kids paying RRP for whatever pap they throw out. 'over the hedge' and other such dross, Ice age 2.

Btw does anyone know if Gears of War for PS3 would be possible as i have a mate who says the PS3 can't handle Gears of War :s *confuzzled*

As far as I know the PS3 couldn't handle GoW because it needs the 360s 512 MB RAM rather than 256 MB RAM the PS3 has. Epic have stated numerous times GoW simply would not function without 512 MB. Before GoW the 360 was only going to have 256 MB itself but Epic showed them GoW in both 256 MB and 512 MB and convinced MS to spend the extra $1Billion to make it happen; but that also helped cause the shortages at launch.

I wanted to say something along the lines of this the other day, I was up in newcastle over christmas spending time with my girlfriends family. And her sister is a foster carer, She looks after 6 kids, all wanting a PS3, And the hubby who lives there, Who always gets the latest thing, Is holding on the the PS3.

in that house they all have a PS2, and 1 kid got a 360 for Xmas, The others are waiting on the PS3.

Indeed a colleague of my dads is waiting on the PS3 because of all of the hype. He will pay whatever to get his hands on one.

Also just to add one of the reasons he is after one is because he thinks the PS3 has a 8800GTX under the 'hood'. I had to contain my laughter when he told me that.

:p

Yes, that work around is by duplicating data across the Blu-ray disc but then, what's the use is 25 GB in future if you cannot read it off quickly enough?

How many times did they duplicate data? We don't know for sure and that will make use of 25GB capacity nicely!

I would imagine that if the dev's really wanted to, they could get around that sort of thing.
