PS3 on a plasma

Don't get PLASMA's. From day 1 they get worse as the gas depletes. By the time they have hit their 50% MTBF the brightness has nearly halved on them
Not to mention the screen burn problems with dogs.

Lol I advised my dad to get a Panasonic TH37PX70 as it wipes the floor with lcd for SD which is all he watches. He went into the shop and the salesman said "don't get plasma it needs toping up every 2 months and if you have the screen at an angle all the plasma falls out" I mean wtf!

Thats utter crap...

Do some homework before advising people please, or just don't post.

I've had a Pioneer 436 for yonks now and I wacth Sky, Stream media via my HTPC and play on my XBOX 360 with aboslutely no sign of burn in.

The burn in people are describing above is a result of it being on the same channel / image continuously for hours and hours, who the hell does that at home?

I've still yet to see an LCD thats beats a Plasma for normal everday use. However if it was purely to use for gaming then I would say go LCD. Also the lastest batch of 1080p LCD's are pretty good but still cant touch plasma on SD.

If a salesman told me that, I would ask to see his manager, and tell his manager how badly informed his staff were :P

Oh my dear god.... This is the sort of post that really get's me ****** off!!

Why even bother posting something like that!? I guess you own a LCD screen/TV. It wouldn't make a lot of sense someone saying:

fear not

it appears that the powers that be have given him a free holiday .. permanently !

I'm only an occasional Game player and definately not hard core.

Can't make up my mind between an LCD Samsung LE40F868BDX or a plasma Pioneer PDP-428XD. I think probably a better SD quality would be better at this stage. Anybody run a PS3 with this Pioneer ?

Go LCD. Plasmas have major issues.

So does Plasma.

Shimmering/flickering effect.
Screen burn with static images.
Low resolution.
Higher power consumption.

Plasma isn't better than LCD for everything, both have pros and cons. As does CRT and DLP.

Plasma does have a shimmering effect on the pixels, if you can't see it you've obviously not got used to LCD monitors with totally flicker free pixels. I noticed it straight away, it's not as bad as CRT 50/60hz but it's still there.

Plasmas do indeed get screenburn.

Low resolution- unless you buy a new 1080p panel, current ones are 1024x720, which is a bit low for PC gaming, on larger screen. Plasma does use more power.

I had a demo this week between Panasonic 42 Inch Viera TH-42PZ700PED 1080p vs Sony 40 X3500 , The Panasonic 42 Inch Viera was miles ahead on picture quality via blu ray

Did I say anything about picture quality? Nope. A DLP has better picture quality than a plasma, but guess what- single chip units have rainbows which'll give you headaches.

My 40" M86 LCD is fine, and will do for 5 years until cheaper 1080p plasmas drop down in price.

The problem with LCD is the Sharpness setting, just setting mine up on freeview today and it looked best all the way down, due to transmission bitrate, with it reduced less blocking and actually more finer detail.

Did you spend time in a darkened room, spending at least 20 minutes on each tweaking display prior to A-B testing?

The local dealer takes the mick of my screen "eeew LCD" I just retort "eewww screenburn" which his set has.. :-D

I spent around 30 mins on both products , Panasonic came out on top outstanding , sony was pretty amazing also , i came to the end thinking the plasma came top , did not test with PS3 , did not have time

Just for the record I have a Sony 42" plasma, a KE42TS2E, which is by no means latest technology (though it was when I bought it 4 years ago).

It has been used daily, both for watching telly / DVDs & playing games ever since and still looks great; no screen burn, no appreciable lack of brightness.

000:1 contrast ratio starting to show its age now against newer displays, but still not bad by any measure.

there is no argument needed here...

Anybody in the know... should know that you cannot 'currently' buy ANY better TV - than the Pioneer 4280 / 428xd - It is the BEEES NEEES.

Never seen plasma shimmering/flickering, but lower res plasma screens do show up dithering badly when they try to display colours which they cant do natively.

Screen burn, yes if your silly, but no sign of dogs burning my screen and I watch sky one a lot, so for normal use nothing to worry about no a modern panel.

Low resolution.. thats just rubbish, Plasma's go to 1920x1080 @ 42inch now thanks to the 10th generation panasonic panel. Price wise.. Its about the same as last years TH42PX60 which was a 1024x786 panel.

Anyway the 1024x768 panels are high enough resolution to mask the plasma dithering effect, and depending on how far from the screen it might not even make any noticeable difference to move up to a 1920x1080 panel. Resolution isnt the only factor in the picture quality equation.

Higher power consumption... thats bearly true. Yes a plasma displaying a 100% bright white image will consume more power than an LCD panel by 10-15%. However a plasma can acually use less power than an LCD when both screens are displaying a totally black image (LCD uses power to hold the crystals in the position that 'blocks' the backlight). Overall a 'good' LCD compared with a 'good' plasma, the plasma is only a few percent more power usage. That said, some of the 'off brand' Plasma panels do seem to be rated at insane power draw... but I am guessing they are tested for 'worst case' power, average power draw is much much lower. My 42inch panasonic 'averages' about 150W during use, which is much lower than its 'rated peak' load.

Plasma give a better 'natural' looking image than an LCD panel in 'video/film' usage, to me at least.
