Ok guys, I want to buy one in the next month or 2, I got a 37" HDTV...

I am buying for movies and gaming, not just gaming so the whole BR vs HD-DVD is important.

I am hearing and reading a lot about XB360's failing, anyone got a PS3 that has died?

Is there any plans to release a XB360 with the HD-DVD as standard?

Are the PS3 better now with a few software upgrades? I remember people saying that they were less than good when they first arrived.

Any opinions welcome.

Thanks.

I'd say if its for movies too get the PS3.

And no there's no plans to have the HD-DVD as standard.

xbox 360 is as loud as a hair-dryer

youve been warned
Cant say for the HD-DVD but its pretty quiet when playing normal DVDs the console only makes noise when you're playing games and it starts reading fast...

PS3 is totally silent (well mine is) and 360 isn't.

Movies wise I'd go for the PS3 but for games, at the moment, I'd go for the 360.

Online play I'd take PS3 anyday.

Blu-ray is currently outselling HD-DVD about three to one iirc. Also, have you noticed how almost every advert to buy DVD's, which you see on the TV, lately has 'also on Blu-Ray' added? I think that says a lot about the way the so called 'format war' is going.

I have both and they are both pretty decent games consoles although right now the 360 has more games out for it. The PS3 has some good titles on the horizon as well though so it just needs a bit of time to get a decent catalogue of games. But I would really say that the PS3 feels like a much better machine, build quality wise, and if you want it for movies then you can't really go wrong - especially as the last firmware update enabled upscaling for DVD's etc.

you must have something wrong with the bearings in your fan then, why does every-one worry about a little fan noise when you cant hear it for the TV speakers anyway!!
they just like to moan, possible ps3 fanboy :P

If you can be patient with the software, and content then I'd say a PS3 by a mile :)

It's like comparing a ford escort (360) to a BMW (PS3). You pay for what you get,but unfortunately the PS3 needs to mature as a gaming console.

Of course if you haven't had a 360, then the PS3 games catalogue will probably look OK as most of the games are multi-platform with the PS3 versions coming off a little worse in most cases..

Unfortunately the 360 is noisey in most cases, and prone to failing :(

LMAO another post about noise!!!
Please take no notice of these boys that measure the decibels the 360 kicks out, its sad not a valid reason to decide agaisnt one.
Before you all start saying im not a 360 fanboy, im not infact the only reason I own consoles are for games such as forza2 and Grand turismo HD.
To some it up 360=large games list goodish console PS3=small games list pathetic price!!!

Since the current 1.8 update for the PS3, giving up scaling on DVDs and also allowing BR to run at 720P on non 1080i TVs I think the PS3 is now a very good choice for the movie side of things. Its quiet, not silent, it doesnt need an add on to play HiDef Disks, so i think it makes it look a lot tidier, also it seems very reliable (touch wood). If your thinking of buying in a couple of months time some of the more anticiapted PS3 games will be out such as Lair, Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Also the relative ease streaming content from your PC to the PS3 is also quite a useful feature, the 360 can also do this, but i dont know how well or how easy it is, and Wifi is standard on the PS3. I think come the autumn and towards the end of the year when Home, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Haze and some of the other games are released, the main gripe about lack of games will be addressed. Dont forget the web browser is also not to bad for a console, and can be quite useful somtimes.

PS3 defo for DVD player etc.....

BUT

The PS3 online multiplayer has a long way to go to catch up Xbox Live :)

It seems to me PS3 is superior in every way currently - except for the smaller selection of games and worse online system (it's still fine though). If you have/going to have a HDTV the PS3 is worth it just for the blu-ray though.
(I have all 3 consoles btw)

Well mine was noisey, fact!!!

If yours isn't then good for you, but as there have been several posts in this forum alone claiming it's the 360 is too noisey then I'd say your one of the few lucky ones.

And I just corrected your last comment for you :D

Ive got both consoles and i would say at this moment in time the games for the 360 are top draw compared to the average games available for the PS3.
If i was you id get a 360 first! but thats my opinion! :p

My 360 is a noisy bugger as well and yes they are certainly prone to failures. No doubt the PS3 games catalogue will grow considerably in the next year, so no worries there. On a minor point, I think the build quality and general feel of the 360 controller is far superior to the PS3.
