PS3 vs 360 graphics

I'm pretty confident that a lot of people will be eating their words in 6 months to a years time.

When we see the true potential the PS 3has to offer compared to the 360, only then can we really judge for sure. Until then it's all speculation and hype.

There is no way you can count any of the presetn range of titles as a good comparison. Many, for both consoles, have been rushed through to ensure there were a sufficient number of games on the shelves for launch and just beyond.

interesting... though I would point out that the both shots were taken at 720p - it's possible the ps3 looks better at 1080p...

fini
PS3 reportedly has bad textures at 1080p.

I'd say hands down 360 wins for Lighting in them screenshots however.

Little difference though, certainly PS3 hasn't lived up to the hype about the Cell.

D'oh! thought I read somewhere that Blu-ray was faster access time tan standard DVD... oh well!
At 1x speed then the BR drive will be faster than the DVD drive, however, as we know, the PS3 has a 2x BR drive whilst the 360 has a 12x or 16x DVD drive. Which makes it faster overall.

True, but they aren't out yet. And the point about using multiple discs still stands.
Dual layer BR discs are actually out and available afaik. Expensive, but available.

Looks like you didn't read my earlier post about how swapping disc's at inopertune moments in certain 3rd person, free roaming titles woudln't really cut it.

Disc swapping is fine during some games, but not during others.
Since when are game designers stupid enough to make you load disc2 just at that inopportune moment when you happen to be shooting a bad guy? Come on, what rubbish. You will need to swap the disc when your running down non-descript corridor number 32. Only problem i see is with games that have 1 massive level that you move about (such as GTA and Just Cause) However, MS can easily add a the ability to write a certain amount of data to the hard drive.

BD has been tested using 100GB discs, And its theoretical it could go to 200gb.

Takes less time not to swap :p
200GB discs? So you honestly think they will ever actually release 8 layer BR discs? That is highly doubtful. Regardless that the PS3 probably won't be able to read them.

From Wikipedia
"The Blue-ray Disc standard was jointly developed by a group of consumer electronics and PC companies called the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). Members include:- Matsushita, Pioneer, Phillips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung and Sony"

Sony may have a share in BD but is by no means the sole owner. Just like Sony and Philips jointly developed the CD.

This doesn't mean that Sony are likely to get huge royalties from the format. They do have a vested interest in the format though and no doubt the inclusion of the BD player was to ensure they make a return on their investment.

How many of the above compaines have their own television and film production/distribution units big enough to buy out Columbia pictures ?

Sony pushing Blu Ray is not for the benefit of the consumer, if it was the industry would have decided on a single HD format.

i dont think the XBOX360 has 6 cores. it has 1 CPU with 3 cores AFAIK.

"Custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU
- 3 symmetrical cores at 3.2 GHz each
- 2 hardware threads per core
- 1 VMX-128 vector unit per core
- 1 MB L2 cache"

each core does MORE, but lends to less flexability because there are only 3 cores, not 6. however the 6 leads to complexity on the PS3 making it expensive to develop for.

Actually the 360 cores are MORE flexible because they are general purpose cores. Each SPU in the PS3 is highly specialised and is not really meant to lend itself to games (from what i have read) particularly well. Folding@Home however just flies :p

...read it all before quoting me!

It actually has 1 x BD, 8 x DVD and 24 x CD

Yeah but Sony head the BDA and will get the majority of (if not all) the royalties. it is their pet project. The others are on board so they can make players for the format and probably pay less royalties.

I was aware that it can read DVD and CD but who cares? Everyone in this thread is touting the BD player. 8x DVD is still too slow. I thought it was a 2x BD as well but thats even worse.

Can DVD be used for games? if so, will Sony actually allow publishers to publish on DVD? Are any release titles using DVD?

I completely agree. The 'TRUE POTENTIAL'tm of the PS3 will melt most peoples brains. Forget Resistance, and all the games released in the first 6 months, the PS3 is capable of graphics and physics far beyond anything we've seen before on any platform. With it's Cell processor it will soon make Gears of War look positively 8-bit

The blu-ray drive is the future, Xbox users will be crying when they have to change discs to keep up.

Also don't forget PS3 is capable of a real time photo simulation scatter mode!

The Xbox 1.5 users should just wait and see what real next gen gaming is all about! Right back to Genji.

Yes dvd can be used for games. The read speed doesn't really matter though considering the amount of data that will be pulled from the disk at once. I'd rather have 8x dvd anyway if it doesn't sound like the jet engine drive of the 360.

:D haha awesome....:p:p

If PS3 does exceed the 360 graphically (which I doubt it ever will, but accept it has the potential to do so. I think the PS3 and 360 are gonna be locked in a neck and neck race for this generation once PS3 developers catch up) it will never be by a huge margin, it would be barely a difference at all

Stop being such a fool

Unless you have seen the future its impossible to predict that.

I think you only have to compare the current release schedules to see its a FACT that the number of X360 expected AAA Games will out number the PS3 titles.
Experts within the industry are also not convinced Sony will repeat their PS2 success...

Sales predictions will always be a bit of a estimation for number of units sold.
Personally i feel Sony are making a huge mistake not having a £299 package available and as i said earlier £400 - £500 consoles have NEVER sold in this country in high volume. Its still a fair judgement to expect the X360 to outsell the PS3, although still one of my own opnion.

Techies will get it sure, well off Sony fan gamers and spoilt kids too but are you all assuming the price ISNT a drawback particulary when viewed against a rival cheaper system with better online mechanics and a wider choice of quality games is available within the X360?

If anything the X360 market will probably see more PC gamers getting interested as has been the case already because you cant deny a cool system costing less than a decent GFX card upgrade isnt a bad decision offering fun gaming with a lot less hassle/expense PC gamers are used too.

Im not anti Sony i am however completely peeved off at Sonys BS and overhyping and then releasing a console with NO killer APP and quite frankly nothing to set it aside from Microsofts offering. To promote it in the way they have and have the situation as poor as the current release schedule is well thats pretty dire also remembering this was a console that was to launch in Easter of 06 before the several delays, oh Sony you do talk so much ***t.

You can't take any real notice of "expected AAA games", especially after how bad some have turned out.

Name the ones that were expected to be AAA and turned out so bad?

I think its safe to assume

Halo 3
Forza 2
Ghost recon 2

Will all be in that class and thats just for starters.
Do remember first batch titles will never usually be a systems best.
GOW is a fine example of what the machine is easily capable of.
