PS3 vs 360 graphics

Kronologic said:
Ok I will post here, been watching this thread for a while and its about time for my 2p.

Price :
PS3 vs. 360 console price comparisons are BS, we can not give an accurate comparison because we do not know for definite what the price of these 2 consoles will be on the PS3 launch in the UK (whenever that will be). Further more, there has not been a like for like comparison yet the fact is Sony (and their fanboys) have been adding things on to the 360 to inflate its cost (or picking the core and comparing it to a 60gb ps3) or hiding additional costs on the PS3 like the HDMI cable (or saying "I have a Bluetooth headset so that saves me £25")

It is a simple fact that to play high definition games it is way cheaper to do so with a 360 than it is a PS3.

Graphics:
The regular, intelligent, reasonable posters in this forum are well aware that Graphics have hit a point of diminished returns. The hardware difference is not great enough between these consoles for there to be a huge difference in quality. As we have seen in the beginning of this thread the 360 and PS3 games look very alike, the only difference being the lighting and some background details in the 360 version (on the most part). This is probably estimate to the 360s better development environment and architecture. We will probably find that the 360 versions of games will always have the nicer touches in them.

Architecture:
the PS3 has 1 PPE and 7 SPEs one of the SPE is taken up by system requirements with an optional second also being taken up.
The 360 has 3 dual core processors. Which means effectively 6 processors, not that much difference. Oh and these 6 processors are better designed for game operations. Overall I think the best way to describe the 2 as this.

A Lorry has a higher number of horse-power than a f1 car. But which will win a race? The F1 obviously. The Lorry needs more power to pull its own weight. The PS3 is a lorry, the 360 is closer to the f1 car.
I'm not saying the 360 vastly out performs the PS3, that is not the case, the two consoles will always be very close in performance. Some things the PS3 will do better other things will be done better on the 360. But there will never be a case where one console is vastly superior in an area.

Also the "PS3 is a custom built machine, where as the 360 is an over glorified PC in a white box!" statement is utter BS and whoever said that clearly knows sweet FA about either consoles. What makes that statement worse is that Sony are constantly touting the PS3 as a computer and that all components are upgradeable, like a PC.

The 360 has very little to do with a PC, most of the main components are custom built tailored for the 360, unlike the PS3 which has an almost "off the shelf" graphics card.

Having an architecture that is too advanced and complicated is far worse than a simple to program for. Games publishers want to make maximum profit. If it takes 10000 hours to build a 360 game but 15000 hours to build a PS3 game, and you need "Smarter Programmers" then that will cost a considerable amount more. Chances are there will be much fewer PS3 only games than there will be 306 games. We have already seen a lot of publishers move away from the PS3 and many more have criticised it for various reasons.

The argument "People managed it on the PS1 and PS2" is not really valid anymore as there were no immediate competitors to the PS1 on 2. The N64 came out much later than the PS1 and SEGA were already in huge financial difficulty when the dreamcast came out, and were not able to compete with the PS2. Hence Publishers had no choice but to develop games for the PS3. The 360 has come out earlier, costs less, is equal in power, easier to develop for and has a large install base. These factors give the publishers a lot of choice, I hope Sony was nice to their partners in the past because if they treated them anywhere as badly as their customers we might see some fallout in that area.

Install Base:
As I have stated the PS3 is going to cost publishers a lot more to make games, this can not be argued (unless you are an idiot). This means that they need to sell either a lot more copies, or the same amount an a much higher mark-up. I read somewhere that a PS2 game requires 100k sales to break even, a PS3 will take approx 500k. Sony games go into the budget/platinum range after 400k sales. So that mean that games will become budget games before they even break even on the PS3.
The ratio of game purchases to console purchases is 5:1 per year at the moment for the 360. If the PS3 had a similar attachment rate, then only 5- 10 games in the next 12 months will break even. Can developers take that sort of financial risk? Will they ever risk releasing on the same week as another major release (regardless of platform)?

Sony will make up the Sales over time, once they sort out their manufacturing issues. However to get 500k sales per game they will need an absolutely massive install base to attract the Publishers. MS currently has about 16x the install base of the PS3.

IMO if the PS3 does not get within 25% of the MS install base by the end of 2007 then the publishers will begin to look at the 360 as the market to focus on, with the ports going to the PS3. Simply there are more people to sell the game to, and it is cheaper to make the game on this console.

Has Sony released a great console? No. IMO they have only managed to release a console that is equivalent to the console MS released last year, at a much higher price. They did release great consoles in the Previous 2 generations. But imo the innovation this round has been lead by Microsoft and Nintendo. Sony has only been keeping up with the current trends. Will the PS3 sell? Well I think the demand will be higher than the supply for the first year, but I honestly feel, having played on both, and by industry analysis, the PS3 sales may slow down by the middle of 2008 where as the 360s will remain constant.
Will the PS3 damage Sony's image? Yes, it has with a lot of people that were not tied to owning one console. I was planning on getting all 3. I'm sceptical I will even own a PS3. ( I certainly wont until the price is at least £150). I think this damage will extend to the general consumer public over course of the next 2-3 years and the PS4 will have a much tougher time getting acceptance into peoples living rooms. Than the PS3 has currently.

If you have managed to read this far... People will shoot down any unfounded, or incorrect statement on OcUK. It just so happens a lot of people posting "Pro PS3" statements, are making unfounded, inaccurate statements.

Oh and before anyone says it, I am not a 360 fanboy, I am a console fanboy, I just happen to own and really like the 360 ATM. Sony has simply done nothing to draw me away from that (the Wii has and I will get one in about 3 months time).

Quoted for truth. Pretty much spot on assessment.

Name the ones that were expected to be AAA and turned out so bad?

I think its safe to assume

Halo 3
Forza 2
Ghost recon 2

Will all be in that class and thats just for starters.
Do remember first batch titles will never usually be a systems best.
GOW is a fine example of what the machine is easily capable of.

Load of games on loads of platforms have turned out to bad, anyone can hype a game. Games like fear, oblivion, doom3 and killzone, were expected AAA games that turned out to be dissapointing to a lot of people.

And they all still sold in the bucket loads....

Many people were devestated by the retarted AI in GT4 and the boring endurance races, still it sold millions.

Forza 2 and Halo 3 are two system selling titles what has the PS3 got on launch or before December 07 to tempt us?

Im not being sarcastic, i just dont know of any?

So? Sales don't mean its an AAA game, gameplay determines that. No one is going to buy any console because the games have high sales if everyone says it's games are crap.

Thats true but in AAA titles i was trying to reflect the general interst/sales potential rather than personal subjective tastes.

I think if you look at the reviews of the ones you mentioned you will find them all pretty favourable though, maybe youd care to look at average scores on the current PS3 titles for comparison?

The point is good games and titles with high expectancies are the ones that sell regardless if they live upto the hype or not. Its also these games that can sell systems.

looks like Ps3 has outsold the 360 in four weeks even though the 360 has been out a year!

Its things like this that no matter what is being sold in Japan if its made by Sony then they will buy it , coupled with how they hate the American Company Microsoft that will ensure that the PS3 will be a success no matter how good/bad it is.............

PS3 storms ahead of 360 in Japan

Sony's PlayStaion 3 has overtaken the Xbox 360 in sales in Japan. After only a month, the PS3 is ahead of the Xbox 360 by 10,000 units. It seems that the Japanese can't get enough of their beloved Sony.

quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Wii’s launch week sales of 400,000 make it the early leader in the Japanese market, Xbox 360 has sold fewer than 180,000 units in its first year on sale. PS3 recently surpassed this barrier, and already enjoys a lead of nearly 10,000 units,

don't really blame them though, would you buy something that is made in America after they drop the atom bomb on you.

Other than the fact that the PS3 has outsold the 360 being true, the rest of that post is utter rubbish!
The Japs are buying the PS3 because within 6 months, it will have better games for that market than the 360 will have managed within 1 and a half years.
The 360 hasn't sold because there are no games on it that cater for that market. it has nothing to do with the brands. They are not buying the PS3 because it is made by Sony. Anyone that thinks that has not got a clue.
Blue Dragon is the first good 360 game for that market, simple as. If MS had gotten Square on board earlier with some FF magic then the 360 would be selling by the bucket load.

As far as who wins the next gen. Japan makes little difference, it is a tiny market with diminishing influence in comparison to the US and Europe. All the major Jap developers are already making games that cater for the Western markets and will continue to do so so long as they are profitable. If the PS3 doesn't sell well in the west then it will lose exclusives like Res Evil etc.

Well considering USA is the largest market and the fact that PS2 was KING in USA youd think then with the HYPE and relelase of the PS3 that it kicked butt in sales, well guess what ........

The American games market saw more than twice as many Wii consoles sold as PlayStation 3s during November, according to data from research group NPD. But neither company was able to keep pace with Microsoft's Xbox 360, which sold 511,000 units during November - no doubt greatly helped by the launch of blockbuster title Gears of War

Im telling ya guys high price and poor launch line up = mountain to climb

After witnessing the ignorant attitude shown by some in here i half hope the PS3 does fail, would teach you all for not getting your facts straight (not aimed at quoted poster)

Hold on, the Playstation 3 does actually have a DVD Rom too y'know. Surely this will be the prefered (and cheaper production) media format for most games developers to start with. Although I'm sure they will use BD when it's a sufficient sized game to warrant it.

Yeah I know its the same drive that reads dvd's, fact is its transfer speed remains 8.7mb/s no matter what media its reading (i think ill have to check), but 8.7mb/s is reasonbly fast for a dvd but still slow compared to the 360

This has turned into a fruitless argument and i'm suprised this thread hasn't been closed already. The whole thing is just going round and round in circles.

"the 360's better because blah, blah, blah - poohead!"

"no the PS3's better because spurlunkichunk, numbnuts!"

Jeesh, you should go back and re-read some of your posts and realise how damnright aggresive you're all getting over this, and they say video games don't cause violence - I feel like going out and destroying something beautiful.

I give in and admit defeat, the Xbox 360 is the greatest games console ever made by man, in fact maybe god himself had his hand in it's creation, and yet I have come to realise from your carefully thought out and well researched posts that the PS3 isn't even worth using as a footrest on the bog.

Thank you and goodnight!

11MB/s vs 22MB/s with them having hard drives though transfer rate isn't really an issue.

Why are people assuming the 360 has 3 3.2 ghz dual cores inside? Every spec list ive seen has said 3 3.2ghz cores, not dual core but single core.

Says 2 threads per core in that last link but obviously that doesn't make it into a triple dual core system. At the minute my iexplore.exe has 33 threads on it.

Some of us enjoy the debate, well ive tried to be serious, fair even.
Finishing the way you do is just mirroring some of your posts earlier the past few days. If you want to be treated serious i suggest you post more seriously and research that what you do post is factual.

Its true weve gone off the graphics only debate which well still was a system VS debate imho. Sorry for my posts which may of taken away from the OP topic.

Im for starting a new thread and hope that it keeps the topic fair yet serious, those that are willing to geniunely discuss it are welcome.

From what i've read in this thread (actually missed the middle as am catching up) i am certain i made the right choice last week in purchasing a 360 premium with 4 games (WWE, Lego Star wars, COD3 & Double agent) for £320.

A PS3 would cost me twice as much no doubt for that, and i'd still have to wait several months for the release date, and probably another 2 months to get the console at a normal price, and not be fleeced by cheeky bayers.

The 360 is a working element, a console which has ironed out its creases, and has built up a huge fanbase while Sony messed about trying to fix Blue-ray. This is where the battle was won last time by Sony, (the fanbase) its where its also already lost this time, and its their own fault. I have no doubt if both consoles were released on the same day, Sony would be dominant, but they missed that opportunity, and i believe will suffer for it.

All this for a console which is either 10% better than the 360, or 10% worse, wow, well worth the wait isn't it?

All these happy happy 360 owners playing their games, being wowed and entertained, while the loyal PS3 fans sit there seething that their champions Sony have let them down, and that's what it boils down to for me, i got sick of waiting, and joined the dark side...and i love it.

Hate M$, and stayed well clear of the original xbox, and prayed for the PS3's future like it was the delivery of my first born son. But all you have to do is look about, its close to being a failure before its even been launched in the UK.

PS3 will have to use a heavy advertising campaign to pull them out of the soup, but unfortunately, too many people these days check out what there buying, and nobody can yet justify the PS3 against the 360 convincingly enough for someone on an even keel to go for the Sony offering.

All these problems, and what looks like another dead format in blue-ray will see Sony up against it. Its a shame as well, this time last year i'd be backing sony to do it, to pull it round, but with so much negative press, and a few stories of them being a little harsh with closing of hardware sites etc, they are treating their customers all wrong, and i for one hope they fail.

I feel sorry for all those waiting on a PS3, and i know those same people will champion it to death on its release, even if it does dissapoint them, they wont let on. I just hope next time Sony are around to fight the next next gen wars, and get it right from the off and learn from there mistakes, but i feel M$ may have found their winning touch, and wont let up easily in this market.

PMSL honestly, best post on here by far lol, I dunno why but I just could'nt stop laugthing when I read that, on a more serious note just don't take it all so seriously, the problem with people over here they can't debate/argue over something without taking it to another level, I find it all good fun this 360 vs PS3 stuff, A good friend of mine has choosen the sony camp and Im' glad as it gives us something to debate and grind over, as long as it does'nt get personal I don't see the harm, in work I argue with people all day and they give back as good as I give out, some of these people are very good freinds of mine and the arguements help create a closer bond between us, just relax dude.

Still waiting for anyone to give good reasons to buy a PS3?
Yes

doc46 said:
Well for starters ANYONE who hasn't got CAT5 running through their house. The PS3 gives you FREE wireless connectivity.
No it doesn't, you pay for it by buying the more expensive Playstation3. It does NOT come as standard.

doc46 said:
Anyone who doesn't want to spend $30 to charge their controller can do it for free on the PS3
Xbox360 users could use rechargable batteries if they wanted, as could Wii users. Xbox360 users can however use their pads whilst it's charging.

doc46 said:
Anyone who already has a wireless bluetooth earpiece doesn't have to shell out another $60 on a wireless earpiece
Whilst true in theory, in practice it's a different story. The majority of headsets aren't working and those that are are having issues.

doc46 said:
]Anyone who appreciates the awesome slideshow software that is part of the OS with the PS3, will hold their nose high when compared the the 360's offering.
If you're talking about the XMB software that's on the PSP then that certainly isn't a positive. The dashboard behind the Xbox360 is far superior to that on the Nintendo Wii and all reports I have read have said it's far superior to that of the Playstation3 too.

doc46 said:
Anyone who doesn't want to run out of harddisk space within 5mins will appreciate the PS3
I've not run out of space in a year with the Xbox360, however you will run out of space on the PS3 with installing games a recommendation, though not in 5 minutes as most games take 7 minutes to install.

doc46 said:
Anyone who doesn't want ANOTHER UGLY white plastic box in their precious home cinema array so that they can watch hi-def movies, and using a system that has 3 times the support.
They may not be getting a 'white plastic box', however they most certainly are getting an 'ugly black box', I for one really like the look of the Xbox360.
And in what way does the PS3 have 3 times the support? Especially with HD-DVD outselling Blu-Ray 3:1.

doc46 said:
And anyone who doesn't appreciate everytime they play a game they have the equivilant to a washing machine on spin in the backround..
My Xbox360 is quite loud. When my sound is on mute! Are you using any volume? Yes the PS3 is quieter, but I also like to play through 5.1 setup so sound is important to me.

doc46 said:
You are a xbox360 fanboy to the end, so no doubt whatever positive things said about the PS3 will only go in one ear and out the other.
I know that isn't aimed at me, however you might try to call me one. However, I'm not. I have 2 PS3 orders in and will have another with a company that hasn't opened orders yet. I have also had 5 PSones, 2 PS2's and a PSP.

doc46 said:
The only argument that can be said about the 360 is that it currently has a better catalogue, and that won't be for much longer.
Really? For much longer? I'd say atleast another 2 years of good games would be required and during that period for Xbox360 to have 6 months of stinkers. I wouldn't take any PS3 launch title over 15 Xbox360 titles I could name. The only one that interests me is Resistance too.

doc46 said:
Value wise, once you start dipping in for the extra's you will want down the road, the PS3 is better value.
Only if you wish to have everything. Value wise it's cheaper to have the Xbox360 purely because you can play games on the core console without buying any 'extras'.

Oh and as a side note, you also didn't mention that you have to buy an optical and high-definition video cable seperate from a playstation3. Microsoft included the HD cable free with the premium and optical cables with VGA cables, which Sony aren't.

Karl.

The 360 has a single tri core (cut down) power pc processor with each core capable of 2 logical threads at once. Thus in theory it could be classed as 6 logical processors.
