Well I have to confess to loving mine!
As you can probably tell from my sig, I've been at heart a PC gamer.
I've been a bit miffed of late with the lack of games that take my fancy on the PC, and those that did, coming out bugged and needing patch after patch to get going properly.
So, I was gunna buy a GeForce 8800GTX, and decided I'd give the PS3 a try instead, thinking I'd get more use out of it than simply upgrading my graphics card, and for about the same money.
Well, about a month in, I'm still seriously impressed with it, moreso than I ever thought I would be.
Sure, I feel sometimes like it was released unfinished. (lol after what I just said about PC games) Two firmware updates recently addressing some of the issues, but I still await the new one... allowing access to the XMB whilst playing, and one day, DVD Upscaling. I look forward to Home finally coming out, in fact, I'm really looking forward to that, it looks great.
Motorstorm is just pure fun as far as I'm concerned. Whenever a few mates come over, and I put that on, it's laughs all around.
F1 CE is simply stunning. It looks great, it plays even better, and the sound? My neighbours must love my 5.1 system when I'm playing that.
Most (99%) of my console gaming friends have Xbox360s, and so far they've all been totally impressed with my PS3, and are talking about getting one now as well.
R:FOM, I was a bit disappointed when I first loaded it, but I gave it a chance, and I'm glad I did, as it is brilliant as you start to progress through it. I'm still awkward as hell using a controller for an FPS game, being used to a mouse and keyboard since playing FPS games that way since Quake II back in '97, but I'm getting through it.
Ridge Racer 7. Well, you know what you're getting from that. A leave your brain at the door, pure arcade experience, which does look stunning at 1080p (and I'm sure at 720p too)
Need for Speed Carbon. Everybody seems to hate this, but I did used to enjoy it on the PC, so thought I'd give the PS3 version a spin. I think it's great!
Call of Duty 3. After reading on these forums about how bad it was, I was a bit concerned loading it up the first time. My first impression was "doesn't look that good" (guess I'm used to PC gaming) but again, after playing into it a bit, in fact it does look good, and is good fun... though again, my FPS on a controller skills are letting me down a little.
As for the rest of the PS3, the Bluray player is great. I know a lot of people say they don't want a bluray player, but if you like movies at all, and have a HDTV, then you will be glad of the bluray player. Stick the Casino Royale in there for example, and get the immediate WOW factor. I won't be buying a DVD again.
The store IS a disappointment at the moment. It can only get better. It's kind of frustrating when you're wanting to buy some new games, but would like to try a demo first, and there's hardly any there. Signing up to the other regions stores is no real hassle, and gives you more, but it's still lacking for now.... though I'm also enjoying some of the retro games available again.
So that's my perspective. The novelty still hasn't worn off, like some others I've not got bored, and not played it... in fact, I don't think I've played a single PC game since I bought it... and I've still got Stalker sitting here beside me, with patch 3 already downloaded, waiting to be installed. I guess if you've already got an XBOX360, then maybe it wouldn't have the same impact on you, but for me, I'd say well worth the money. The new updates are coming making it even better, the store is (apparently) due a decent update soon too, and more good looking games are on the horizon.
There we have it, I've probably come across as being something of a fanboy here, which I am not. I also like the XBOX360, even though I never bought one... I thought Gears of War was outstanding.. and I still have my PC here too.
All in all, PS3, a great piece of kit, which is only getting better with each firmware upate, as they add more features, and iron out any little niggles.... oh yeah, the the integrated web browser works well too, making normal surfing on the TV a reality, saving having to boot the PC up for a quick check of something.
V1N.
