PS3, worth it?

Compared to SD analogue cable the difference is huge but for some reason SD DVD's look very good compared to BR DVD's

I can see that BR is much sharper but I expected the difference to be much greater, maybe because I have digital SD cable and a good DVD player the difference is smaller than expected.

I haven't touched my 360 since i've had it (but i did complete most of my 360 games first!)

RFOM is *** most underated game ever, but it takes a few chapters for it to really get going, and the joypad aiming i found i got used to very quickly.

Motorstorm is a visual treat, but needs a little patience to get the hang of.

If you havent played Oblivion yet, thats awesome.

Tekken - need i say more.

runs all decent / recent PS2 games

if you are tempted, just get one. There are some quality games coming out over the next few months too!

ONE THING - if you want to put linux on it - format and partition the drive BEFORE anything else to be ready, else you got a headache a few weeks down the line when you want to try it out!

There is no comparison between sd dvd and Br - even at 720p in my opinion, br is like early morning fog lifting on a bright sunny day

(and yes I have a decent dvd /hdd recorder connected via componant also)

Anyway - the games are ok at the moment but nothing trully amazing

However I have got over 20 blu-rays so that should tell its own story.

Yes some are transferred okish, but others (like Casino Royale) are actually pretty impressive

Thanks for all the replies. :)

I've decided I'm going to leave it for now. I knew at release there weren't that many games that appealed to me, and it seems like there still isn't. I already have a 360 which gets played afew times a week, and hopefully a lot more from next week when I'll be exam free. I've still got afew untouched games aswel (Rainbow 6, Lost Planet, Splinter Cell) which I'm looking to complete, so I think I'll be busy for awhile with this yet. If I get a PS3 now, I think it's realistic to say that it wouldn't get played, or probably even touched judging by the games that are available for it.

I'm gonna save the money and put it towards a 46" Samsung LCD for the living room, and maybe afew months down the line go for a PS3. :)

Mine too. There's no comparison.

As for comparing equipment, I also played SD-DVDs using the PS3, obviously therefore still connected via HDMI.

Even my Mother immediately noticed the quality, and her first words were "wow" (and she never really noticed things like that)

@Dutch Guy: Dunno what's wrong there then... have you got 1:1 pixel mapping selected on your TV, and that godawful sharpening effect turned right off on the HDMI input?

V1N.

EDIT: Sorry, don't mean to make out like you don't know how to work your own telly. ;)

360 all the way. PS3 basically is boring at the no. no feedback from controller.. Exclusive games are ok.. but only ok.
Wait a year i say. 360 is all about "live" and no one does it better.

This is not an PS3 bashers view. I own both.. I really wanted my PS3 to at least be as good as my 360. It just isn't.
Most played games on my ps3 are ps2 games.. wassup with that??

IMO the PS3 is a great machine, and its been worth its expensive price tag. Ive used the blu ray player a fair bit, and you can see the difference, but thats not why i wanted the PS3.

To me, the games on the 360 are slacking off and i wanted something new, F1 and GT HD were enough to sway me into buying one, and they are both brilliant, GT HD is probably oen of the best games ive played in a while, its great fun (much better than Forza IMO), as is F1. Ive also got R:FoM which is a good game, but not as good as gears of war and Vitua Fighter 5, which is a cracking game, really good fun.

Online, the 360 runs circles around it at the moment, its annoying that you cant access your friends list in a game (to be rectified in the next update) and its very annoying they didnt provide you with a headset so you need to buy one.

If you can afford one, id definately recommend one, the games are brilliant and so is the blu ray player. Online, its not yet as good as xbox live, but Sony seem to be showing a lot of determination to make it brilliant online, which so far they are succeeding to do, and after the next update which allows access to the menu bar while in game im sure itll make the PS3 a much much better machine and ill end up buying a headset for the console.

sony hatOr

im kidding, im kidding! :p :o

PS3 will be just as good as the 360 - not sure about the whole online thing though, I'd hazard a guess that the 360 will dominate that for quite some time. I'll be getting one as soon as there's a few games that I want to play on it :)

yes they do need to work on the online support. im looking forward to the next update, as long as those rumours were true. mind you i still havent got myself a headset yet :o

As a console I love my PS3 way more than I do my 360 and Motorstorm is without doubt the best game I've played for ages however for me at least thats the only game out worth having I got RFOM with my bundle and thats the only other game out of the launch titles that appealed to me but having played it theres just nothing to it that sets it apart from any other FPS and if anything its a very poor FPS.

Personally I'd hold of till nearer the end of the year when all the big titles are released, having said all of that though only you know whether or not there's more than just 1 game that appeals to you but as a console its well worth owning defiantly

Yeah, Full Pixel is on, all effects off.

Last night I put the SD DVD in my DVDR and the BR DVD in the PS3 and let them run both at the same point in the movie and switched between them.

I must say that the difference is indeed a bit bigger than I thought, the BR DVD is much sharper, I don't know why I thought that the difference was small, maybe because the first BR DVD I saw was Black Hawk Down which is only 9mbps.

ANyway, enough OT :)

BHD transfer is indeed very impressive (even though I cant stand the film itself)

I've had a PS3 for about a month now and so here's my impressions of the gaming side of it. Before I start though, I will say that I've had a 360 for about 8 months now and I'm very, very impressed with it - whether that makes me more or less biased I'll leave up to you.

Most important thing first, games! I didn't bother getting any games with the PS3 simply because there was none that took my fancy. I downloaded a few demos and the only one I really enjoyed was Motorstorm, not amazing but enjoyable all the same. I played Resistance but didn't think much of it at all, although I did end up buying it simply due to is costing me £17.99 - I traded it in a few days later for Motorstorm. Motorstorm is a good game although it can be quite frustrating at times. And although other people I've spoken to don't agree with me, I think the graphics are very, very good (with exception to the flickering shadows!).
The only other PS3 game I've purchased is Tekken 5 - for £6.99 it'd be rude not too. For the money it is really an essential purchase.

Since getting the PS3 I've bought several PS2 games - I actually had a PS2 already but I guess playing them through an HD connection is more appealing. God Of War II, Okami, Bully, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology have all made it into my collection with many more to join them, starting with Final Fantasy.

So, from the point of view of what PS3 games are available, is the PS3 worth buying now? In my case no. If I didn't already have a 360 then maybe it would be - I already have some of the better PS3 games on the 360 such as Call Of Duty 3, Oblivion, Fight Night etc, so with exception to Motorstorm there is not one other game that I have any interest in at this time.
Moving forward, for me, I'm not totally sure the PS3 will be worth keeping. All multi-format titles that I might want I'll be buying on the 360 before the PS3 - simply prefer the Xbox pad, the user interface, Xbox Live, and the whole Achievement side. So PS3 exclusive titles will be the only ones I'll be buying - will there be enough of them to hold my interest? At the moment, I don't know.

the only reason i want to get a PS3 atm is God of War 2 and thats a PS2 game.

i will get one, just as soon as there are 2 or three games on it that i cant do without.

Well I've just gone and bought one within the last hour. Brand new UK model, for £285 :D with no games though unfortunately.

Not bad for the price hey? :) I figured its worth it just for the bluray player, can't complain for £285.
