PSP or DS (sorry)

If you can be bothered to search about the "extra curricular" :p functions of the PSP then the games you can play on it are pretty much endless i.e. PSX and further back in time. You need to have a fairly good grasp of computers etc to be able to do it.

GT2 is particularly good on the small screen, as is FF7 and FF9.

Also the respectible PSP catalogue that is available (Metal Gear, GTA, Tekken 5, Pro Evo 6 etc)

If you can't then the DS probably has a better native games catalogue.

I've had both. I bought a PSP on launch in Canada and I currently own a DS Lite.

They're very different. The PSP is more than just a games console. Although you can play mp3s and surf the net on the DS, the PSP is much better. It's also got a lot of games that a very similar to their PS2 equivelents. My favourite game on the PSP was Football Manager Handheld. I got addicted to that for months.

The DS is solely about the games. I think the touchscreen is a bit of a gimmick but having two screens does seem to work very well in a lot of games. My favourite game is Advance Wars: Dual Strike but a lot of the first game Mario games are also very good.

They're very different consoles but I won't say that either is significantly better than the other. If you've got a PS2 already, I'd probably say get a DS. If you want something to use as a audio/video player, I'd probably suggest getting a PSP. Other than that, it comes down to your taste in games.

I couldn't put my PSP down with Football Manager on it, I took my home team Hinckley United all the way to the premiership and it took me months :) happy memories. Pro Evo is great on the PSP too.

I never liked the original DS as it just felt plasticy and crap imo, the lite seems alright though. I'm not into Mario or the whole side scrolling platform thing tbh, so the DS has never really appealed to me.

Technically you don't need to but yet again cannot be discussed here. They are just asking for piracy imo, who wants to shell out £400+ to play ps1 games on there psp.

Well you are not, what you are doing is paying 400 quid to pay PS3 games. A plus side to that is you can download PS1 games for your PSP for, what is it 3 or 5 quid? can;t remember off the top of my head.
I think thats not a bad extra tbh. And also they are goig to have the store running so you can d/l them on your PC and transfer them to your PSP too.

As said before it depends on what type of game you like.I chose the psp and I dont regret it. The psp has cool features like streaming dvds from your pc to psp,has built in browser(which I am posting this post from!:D)

DS Lite all the way.
Like so many others I was seduced by the PSP to find that all you were basically getting was a Playstation for your hands.
Such a bad thing?
I guess not - but there was nothing new, nothing original, no "killer game" that made you owning a PSP feel special in any way.

With the DS you've got original games and even exclusive games - games that are only available on that format.
2006 was a great year for DS titles and 2007 already has a great line-up planned.
The unit is cheaper and just looking around at the fact you couldn't buy one for love nor money before Christmas (as opposed to every store having PSP's coming out of their ears) just shows its popularity.

On paper there is no competition - the PSP is the superior piece of hardware.
It's faster, has better specification.
However on paper the WII is inferior to the PS3 in every way...

a little of topic but i read some were in a retro mag you should soon or can now play Amiga games on the psp which would be worth it just for that for me, cos im sad like that :D

ah what the heck buy BOTH!

Agreed!

I've got both and enjoy them for the different styles of game available on each, love stuff like Burnout, Wipeout and Virtua Tennis on my PSP and Mario, Phoenix Wright and Metroid Prime on my DS.

I thought the stylus was going to be a really rubbish gimmick but once I used it for the first time I realised how excellent it was when implemented properly. Okay, a few developers have shoe-horned it into their games just to conform but the majority of games use it very well.

Out of the two. I did prefer the DS purely for gaming fun. But after a while I got bored of it, and sold it a couple weeks ago. I might buy my mates Japanese 1.5 PSP though. :D

I know what you mean. You sometimes get people on these forums who say the PSP has rehashed PS2 games on it and then you watch an advert come on TV for yet another side scrolling Mario platformer!!! Also, just how many version of Mario Kart are out there now?

I really don't see the appeal of the DS at all, but then I suppose that's what makes us all different!

PSP is by far the better console and has, imo, many more better games. Am I the only one who is completely and totally bored of Mario and Co?

Mario franchise > anything sony or ms have come up with.

As for psp being the better console, im sure worldwide sales would say otherwise.

I totally agree that the PSP is the better console.

I was bored with Mario back when I had the LCD Donkey Kong game by Nintendo and that was 26 years ago!!! I guess some people are into the whole cheeky little cartoon character games and some people aren't.

Imo, the resons the DS has sold so well compaired to the PSP is because Nintendo had the console market sewn up with a fairly loyal fanbase + the DS being launched early and being cheaper helped too.

I work in the games industry and id say 80% here own a DS and the other 20% own the PSP. I owned a PSP and wouldn't buy another, I'd go with a DS for sure next time.

I'm gonna get flamed for this, but here is my take.

If you're 12 years old, get a DS. If you're more on the 30ish side of life, get a PSP.

I only recently got a PSP, not been bothered by them before, but as I now live on the South Coast, and follow a London football team, I spend a bit of time on the trains. A few fellas at football had these PSP's, and were raving about them.

Anyway, wife got me one for Christmas, and I'm not looking back. Sitting on the train, having a game of Football Manager 2007, then deciding to listen to a podcast while reading the paper, then watching an episode of Might Boosh, all on a nice big screen, with decent sound quality... if modern trains had wifi, I could do a bit of surfing too!!!!!

I can't ask for more... for what I use it for.

On the other hand... I bought my 11 year old nephew and 9 year old niece DS Lites for Christmas. They love them. Got some very cute games on the console, but just not much for a 34 year old guy... to say nothing of the screen being a little small (and when you get to my age, the bigger the screen the better!!!).

Anyway, there is my 2 pence... flame away!
