PSP or DS (sorry)

I've also got both as well but if I could only choose one it's be the PSP.

People seem to be banging on about original games on the DS but the PSP has some absolutely cracking games.

Everybody's Golf
Ridge Racer
Tekken
Football Manager

Just those 4 games have kept me occupied for over a year and when I'm not playing them I'm watching a movie or tv show on my journey to work.

I had a PSP but traded it for some xbx 360 stuff

it might just be my age..but I just hated the little nubbin..used to knack my thumb

Agreed.

I've got a sum total of 2 games for my PSP. Football Manager 2007 and Tiger Woods 2007. I was thinking of getting SSX for the odd blast, but by and large those 2 games have done me proud for almost a month now. Loving both of them, and have no doubt that they will keep me entertained for a good while to come.

Pro evo is a fairly decent game on the PSP too. It's not up to console/PC standards but it's still damn good for a handheld IMO :)

I totally agree that the PSP is the better console.

I was bored with Mario back when I had the LCD Donkey Kong game by Nintendo and that was 26 years ago!!! I guess some people are into the whole cheeky little cartoon character games and some people aren't.

Imo, the resons the DS has sold so well compaired to the PSP is because Nintendo had the console market sewn up with a fairly loyal fanbase + the DS being launched early and being cheaper helped too.

So you're saying the Nintendo games haven't progressed since single screen game and watch games, no improvements in gameplay, graphics or anything?

Thanks for the laugh, the DS has done more to improve gameplay than most other consoles be they handheld or full systems due to the new control methods (if new control systems don't sometimes improve gameplay when used properly why did all the manufacturers employ analog + digital controls after they proved to be sucessfull?).

As for loyal fan base, it helps, but so does making a system that is affordable and brings in new people to play it, people who don't normally care about games as they see them as "violent rubbish" or "oh you run round shooting people in it don't you?".
The demographic the DS appeals to is suprisingly large, and much more profitable than the traditional gamers - when you limit your games to teens and young men you miss out on the girls, woment, middleaged, and retired groups (all of whom have bought large numbers of DS's due to the fact there are games on it that appeal to them).

Re the original question - the best thing to do is try and borrow both from friends along with some games, and decide from there.

Hear hear.

Although, at the risk of sounding somewhat fan-boy motivated, the notion of describing the DS as something only for 12 year-old children is incredibly laughable, ignorant and ironically enough, childish in itself.

Apologies for the abrasive nature of this post.

Yup, thats the one thing that gets on my **** the most, the "zomg nintendo r for the kiddies" comments. Anyone who thinks that is either braindead or a total card carrying fanboy, games are about fun, why should graphical styles matter?

Definitely get both of you can, but start with the PSP. I've never regretted buying my PSP. The software is just so polished, and games seem to have a cinematic quality. I've got loads of games for mine- I tend to wait for the release hype to die down then buy them pre-owned. If I'd bought just a PSP and Metal gear Acid I'd have been occupied for months. Everybody's Golf, Liberty City Stories (it's GTA3 on a handheld fer gawd's sake, and it's lost nothing!) and many others mean that it's a top platform. To say there's no decent games is simply not true. There are some fantastic games. Try Outrun 2006- basically it's an arcade quality game. On a handheld.

I did buy my two kids (Victoria, 4 and Mark, 7) DS Lites for Christmas though, and after having a play (as you do!) I decided to splash out on one for myself. It's worth it, there are some decent games, although I feel a lot of them are very contrived, in that they build the game around the touchscreen instead of just building a decent game. I will say one thing, the DS' 3D capabilites are shockingly basic. It can just about handle Mario64, and that's a game from a decade ago. If you want to be regularly wowed by production values, then the DS is not your bag. New Super Mario and Yoshi's Island are great, but in pretty much all the non-3d games, there's not really an awful lot going on that would tax a Gameboy Advance. I'm still in two minds about the console overall to be honest.

The all important sitting-on-the-loo statistic sees me playing the PSP more (and in most cases, until legs go dead, which is a sign of decent games). For playing-on-the-train it's probably more the DS Lite. And that's probably because of the size and pocketabillity more than anything else.

On the subject of the DS, Vic is only 4 and can't read properly yet, are there any games for the DS that don't require you to read? I've been through about 10 now, and taken them all back to Game because there's important information that's text based. She's managed to work out Nintendogs OK, which is keeping her occupied, but I'd like to get her some more games. If there aren't any games for non-readers, Nintendo are missing out on a pretty big demographic in my opinion!

No, I'm saying that I was bored with Mario a very, very long time ago... didn't mention anything about the DS's abilities for other games, it's control system or how it's bought non gamers into the console market!

I think you may be being a tad over defensive tbh!

I have both and whilst i love the ds i much prefer my psp. The ds for me is ideal as a quick pick up n play machine whereas i take my psp and 12 games to work and the nights just fly by as they`re deeper.

Games i have on psp >

Killzone Liberation

Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins

Mercury Meltdown

Tales of Eternia

Midnight Club 3

Colin McRae Rally 2005

LocoRoco

Lumines II

Metal Gear Acid 2

Football Manager

Vice City Stories

Metal Gear Portable Ops

Love them all to bits although granted, some get more playtime than others :-)

Oh dear... looks like I'm resting my case when it comes (in some extreme instances) to DS and kids!

Arguement bolstered!

Whereas someone who gets this frustrated over a type of console is obviously not a 'card carrying fanboy'!!!!!!!

This is how I like my irony, friends!

DS has better games. Touch screen is like Motion sensitivity to the Wii. End of thread. If you are getting it for movies and music get an iPod video instead of a PSP. UMD is a failed format.

Is UMD the only way to watch movies and play music on a PSP then?

The bigger question should be...

"Why is it that any thread, in this Console section, about PSP and DS gets swiftly altered into a battlefield of fanboys?"

So much for a non-confrontational or abusive soaked response to an opinion.

i have 1 PSP and 2 DS,

DS is the winner, although there is still some good games on the PSP, choose depending on what you want to do with it and what games you like, or get both

"End of thread"!!!!!

Ok, that's it everybody, Dev2 has spoken and he's says this thread is finished because the DS is better... move along, move along!

*ROFL*

Just to add to my previous comments, that were taken a little to much to heart by some members of this forum.... As an opinion, which is what the original poster asked for, I prefer the PSP. This is due to me not being very interested in Nintendogs, Animal Crossings, Mario, Zelda, etc... as a 34 year old guy I prefer games such as Football Manager, Virtua Tennis and Tiger Woods. That's all.

Based on MY particular requirements in a hand held games machine, I find more games suited to my interests on the PSP, while I generally find the DS games a little 'younger'.

I'm sure they are very good games, and perhaps far superior to those currently found on the PSP... however, it is not my cup of tea.

Perhaps in future, we can all stop taking things a little too seriously, and maybe hold off on the emotional response to 'name call' those who have a different opinion!

Just a suggestion!
