PSP or DS?

I had a DS for a long while, but i just got bored of the samey and gay games, and the craptacular graphics (zelda and final fantasy 3 are good though) i felt that most of the ds games are all a bit kiddy really. So i sold it and got a PSP, which is much better.

Wipeout, final fantasy 7, God of War. And all your PS1 games. Need i say more?

I'm sure you're probably right, but the past few days I've been reading the PSP threads, and decided I wouldn't mind giving a custom firmware a try.

I've got 13 UMD games so far, and the thought of being able to install some of my favourites to the memory stick, so I don't have to change disks, or take so many disks with me when I take the PSP out, not to mention extending the battery life, and faster loading, are just too appealing for me at the moment.

I've no intention of conducting any piracy, just installing some of the games I've already bought to my memory stick. I have a few "quick blast" games, such as Space Invaders Extreme and Capcom Collection, and I have a number of games with a story I'm making my way through, when I have more time. So it would be handy for me to be able to leave the bigger/story game in the UMD drive, and have a few quick blast games always on the memory stick for when I have 10 mins between doing things.

I've only not done it yet, as I know nothing about it, and don't want to brick my PSP, but I'm going to start looking into it this week I think, so long as I don't lose any of the functionality of the official firmwares that come out.

So yes, I'm sure a fair few people install custom firmware with piracy in mind, but for me, the ability to run games straight from the memory stick is exactly what I'm after, and I'd consider it a godsend!

Vin.

I have to agree with what you've just said completely.

I've had CFW on my PSP since I got it, and I've never been tempted to download or pirate a single game (I'm hugely against it in fact).

I mainly use CFW to run my UMD games from the memory stick, mainly for ease of use, but also I feel slightly happier with the disks safe on a shelf rather than risking them getting damaged when transporting them.

I've loads of homebrew games installed, small mini games and stuff mainly. As well as ScummVM so I can run all of the lucasarts point and click games. :p Being able to take screenshots (using a plugin for CFW) is a great feature as well in my opinion.

Being a person that never trades games in, I've still got all my PS1 games lying round too. So I've ripped onto the PSP to play as well.

I've lost no functionality of the original Sony firmware either. :)

It's just bad eggs that do want to pirate stuff that brings the whole thing down.

I probably will use CFW but only for emulation purposes and maybe to replay the PS1 Crash Bandicoot games.

It's like you've read my mind :D

Interesting. Which CFW do you use, and have you tried irShell ?

Are custom firmwares updated regularly, to keep up with any new features added by the official firmware?

I don't know if I'm allowed to ask this, but where do you get them from, and which is the newest/best version (for a PSP slim?)

EDIT: OK, just googled and found Dark Alex.

What do I do?

I want to install my game to an 8gb memstick! ;)

Vin.

Someone let me know if I go too far with the information! :p

M33 CFW (from Dark Alex) is generally updated for all the big Official firmware updates. They tend not to bother for the smallish OFW updates that don't add any useful functionality.

The latest version as far as I know is 4.01 M33-2, I'm running this on a Slim fine.

You'll need a Pandora battery, and a magic memory stick to get the CFW on.
I bought a premade "TOOL" battery cheap from the jungle rather than making my own.

Best advice is to check youtube for some guides, and read as much as you can before you attempt it. Try to make sure you understand what's going to happen as much as you can, rather than just following some checklist.
There are some limitations with CFW on the slim, although it tends not to apply anymore. (Basically you can't run a 1.50 kernal on the slim easily, so if your reading a guide that mentions it you're probably reading a guide for a fat PSP).

Sounds more complicated that I'd anticipated ;)
I'll leave it for another day when I'm more awake ;)
I have a slim, running whatever the latest update was, 4.10?
I have a sony memory stick that I imagine should do the job.
Just need to get a special battery then.

Once it's flashed, I assume you can go back to using the standard PSP battery?

Here's what I don't understand:

What's the battery for?
Magic Memory Stick?
If the PSP is already updated to the latest OFW, can I still install custom? I heard once that you have to keep it at a certain version.

It's not too bad once you get your head around the process. :)

When you install CFW, it'll overwrite the OFW you have installed (4.05 is latest I think). Depending on the installer you use, you'll probably end up with an old copy of CFW, but then it's easy to update to the latest version.

Any memory stick of more than 512mb can be used as far as I know. I have a 1GB stick I used, and keep as a spare.

You definitely need a special battery. You can mod a Sony battery, but I was much happier buying one.

Once it's all installed you just go back to using your standard battery. :)

The battery allows you to boot from the memory stick. The magic memory stick contains the installer for CFW. This is run as a one off to install the CFW on to the internal memory on the PSP.

Using the Pandoras battery, as far as I know, you can go from any OFW, to CFW. Some other, older, outdated methods of installing CFW can only be done from certain OFWs.

OK, thanks, I also have a spare 1gb card that came with my PSP, and the Sony 8gb one I use now.

So all I need to work out, is which files to download for my particular situation ;) I had a look on Dark Alex, and a big list of files comes up, and I dunno where to start. First things first, I'll look into getting a new battery this week, I think rainforest still sell'em.

Is it then easier to upgrade one CFW for another? Or do you repeat the same process with the battery?

Vin.

EDIT: I guess the special battery can also be used as a normal battery too, which'll be handy in itself for long airport waits.

There's lots of different ways to get make a magic memory stick, which probably doesn't help the confusion. :)

You can get installers that you simply point it to the files you need, tell it where your memory stick is, and then let it create the files on the stick.
I've know of an installer that's very first time user friendly. If you want to email me (check trust) I'll happily point you in the right direction. :)

The rain forest definitely sell the TOOL/Pandoras batteries, it's where I got mine.

Upgrading from one CFW to the next is dead easy, you grab the latest CFW and OFW from Dark Alexs site, copy them both to the PSP and run the installer that shows up. :)
