hey guys,

need some advise my psu for my media server has blown up - it is a socket a motherboard running xp2200 cpu

very old machine yes but I remember I had to modify the PSU from 24 pin to 20pin

is there still PSU out there for me that I can buy from ocuk website that doesn't need this modification?

please advise.

Im not 100% sure you can get one from OCUK (they are usually good new ones.)

But im sure you can get 20+4 pin connectors on certain PSUs so you can pick between the two, I know they're out there but its usually the lower quality, non modular, low voltage models.

Have a look though.

thanks not too bothered about quality
the one thing i am worried about it silence
would like a psu that is not too loud

Pretty much most PSUs have a 20+4 connector. The only issue would be if your motherboard needed some extra connector that has since been removed from the ATX spec, such as the P4 connector. You'll also have to watch the PSUs 3.3v and 5v output as these days it is lower than it used to be.

What he said.... It's quite possibile it's what killed your previous PSU for example my old thermaltake 560watt psu put out +3.3V @ 30A, +5V @ 40A

A new 550watt OCZ puts out +3.3V @ 22A, +5V @ 22A

Yes. My brother still has an old dual socket MP2800+, and it needed a new PSU a while back. The motherboard manual recommends at least 30A on the 5v line from memory. Most modern PSU do not supply that, even 650w and higher total wattage. It is all 12V these days. In the end, we found a 450w generic PSU that came with a cheap case, it supplied 30-35A on the 5V line and that powered it 24/7 for another 12 months before he then retired the machine. Still uses it from time to time.

hold on lost in translation sorry I said it wrong guys!

the problem I got is one of the wires has come out of the pin
and will not go back in - this is why the machine no longer powers up. I was trying to force this little black wire in but doesn't go!

nothing exploded or blew up

What sort of pin is it that won't go in? Which connector?

Quite often terminals can pop out if they are not formed correctly. Usually it just takes a tweak with a pointy pliers or something to get them near enough so they'll latch.

If you do need a new PSU - OCUK may not have anything suitable. Something like Casecom 500w is an old-style PSU, cheap and would do the job. But perhaps a quality modern-style PSU which just has 20A on the 5V line may be OK, very hard to tell

For a single core socket A mobo 20 A on +5 V should be fine.

100 W, 65 W for CPU unlikely it will use this anyway. 35 W should cover the rest.

Yes I think so - my brother's machine has 2 x MP2800+ running off a PSU with I think 35A on the 5v line. And that is under 100% load when he uses it.

I shall try show you pics of what has gone wrong
will use pliers to get it working if possible.

but in the meantime any chance of a link from ocuk site for a psu that will work?

putting the wire back into place did not work and I need a new psu fan.

damnit! :(

so I need a 20 pin ATX PSU for socket A

Hiper is actually a decent psu.
I have used and repaired a lots of hiper type r units actually and I know whats wrong with it but it will be much better psu compared to some noname generic units.

members market? mmm let me see how to get there

surely someone from this forum has an old quiet PSU lying around for me!
I feel gutted because I threw my old one away only 2 weeks back!

I know hiper are good. I've got one that's still going strong. Seen numerous builds and for the £40 it cost me about seven years ago its been excellent. It's just due to the batch of exploding ones they had, everyone acts like they were all made from a substance similar to dynamite.
