No idea what people are getting paranoid/excited about with these alerts. The amount of conspiracy theorists in this country is bonkers. They've been used in other countries like the USA for longer than I can remember. IIRC we were going to have them in the UK a long time ago but the government didn't want to stump up the money for it. I've had them when travelling in the US, I was in Palm Springs and it was a warning about a sand storm. The only vaugely plausible conspiracy I've heard about these alerts is that they have finally decided to implement it because of what's going on in Ukraine, but I highly suspect there's absolutely no truth to that either...

I think mostly people are just concerned about the functionality being [ab]used for less important stuff. Ukraine was probably one factor in the system being implemented now out of an abundance of caution - the situation has the potential to lead to things like an increase in terrorism related activity/events indirectly sponsored by Russia, etc.

She will have a heart attack he she gets ( she is on her way to 70 ). Thank you mr government for trying to kill my mother

Serously I wonder how many old people are going to be caught out because of this
You're kind of assuming old people even have a mobile phone/know how to use one my mother is either losing it, losing the charger or forgetting to charge it I've given up trying to maintain it. My stepfather is so deaf he can't hear his anymore so thats gone to the wall as well.

Yeah things like a terrorist attack happening - surely this is a great thing, to be able to warn everyone in the area? I think it’s people being paranoid, no other democratic government abuses the functionality, it’s about trying to protect lives. It’s literally a few clicks on someone’s phone to completely disable it, if they wish. If the government wanted to put someone under surveillance or to send everyone a text message, they really don’t need this emergency alerting system to do that. There’s been enough high profile leaks in the past on the capability of intelligence agencies. I’m surprised anyone tech savvy enough to be on this forum does not understand that. This is in the same league as some of the crazy covid conspiracies.

Move on covid was 3 years ago.

I just wonder has the UK government invested in a system to alert them in good time when we are being nuked?

What good is a text message telling me I have 10 minutes to live? I could eat a lot of pork scratchings in that time mind you…

This thread is really funny.

"How dare the government warn me something bad or dangerous is about to happen where I am!? I will show them who is boss by turning off my alerts and dying. Ha, who's in charge now Mr Government?"

EDIT
According to Facebook, my mother has disabled these alerts, so she'd get along well with you lot :D

Like i said this happened in Hawaii about that missle alert which turned out to be false. I can remmber seeing an interview with jim Carry saying about how he thought this is it this is how im going to die. Panic for no reason. Ok im not sure if the alert went to peoples phone but it did braodcast on Tv and loud speaker outside but at the end of the day all it did is cause panic.
