Punishment for cyclists?

what?
Like thats a valid excuse for a scraep the length of the car?
If yer not gonna fit don't sodding try and go thru/down, some roads are narrower than others.

Had the cyclist had any form of registration/identifier then the poster above would have been able to go about seeking damages. Problem with cyclists is they have no identifier and don't seem to give a toss about any damage they cause, then of course if you even ding their bike they tend to kick up a royal fuss.

Even a small scratch could cost hundreds to be repaired depensing on car/paint/blending

It is the mentality of people that needs to change, as proven in this thread. There are good and bad cyclists and good and bad drivers. Your statement about imposing a minimum fitness level before being allowed on the road is ridiculous. Thinking along the same lines however maybe it would be a good idea to get ALL drivers to do a highway code test yearly? Education and information is the key requirements for all here after all.

Until the mentality of people changes, especially with how selfish people are becoming these days, these kind of arguments will carry on daily.

In short cyclists have as much right as anyone else to be on the road so deal with it and treat them as if they were any other motorised vehicle. Also try leaving for your destination 5 to 10mins earlier than usual. Knowing you have that extra time means you really don't get stressed if there is a small holdup somewhere along the way.

OP,
I posted in another thread my observances over the last 3 months since I've been cycling and I wondered if the same is true for you.
I've noticed that virtually all road bike users obey the law, wear the correct bright gear/helmet, use lights when needed and cycle at a decent speed where MTB/Hybrid users tend to break the law constantly, wear black, no helmet, no lights and ride at 1 mph (and some nearly have their knees hitting their chin meaning they are using the totally wrong sized bike).

A suitable punishment for any misdemeanour would be to replace their bike with a red adults tricycle and they would also have to wear red lycra with a red pointy helmet when riding it. The punishment would last for three months. :p

And for car drivers the same, but for one year.
Fair enough as cars can do more damage.

I run red lights daily on my bike. Sometimes I'll just hop the curb and go around them.

Probably get to work quicker than all the polluters too.

You could end up in a wooden box! leave home 10 minutes earlier maybe?

Leave a bigger gap next time? its not hard to leave enough space for a cyclist to go down, i do it, and i give a thumbs up to people who do it for me when im on my bike

What route do you cycle? The front of my sprinter would love to meet you!:p

I took your comment of - "Surely if you're going to cycle on roads there should be some minimum fitness level before being allowed?" to mean that if you weren't fit enough you wouldn't be allowed, and how else would that be enforced without a fitness test?

People are selfish in all walks of life, many people drive selfishly, many people are selfish whilst on public transport or whilst cycling - yes it annoys me and it sucks but unfortunately that's just life, I don't see any real way of changing how people think (or in many cases, don't).

About the most sensible post on this thread..

My fave issue is the ones who ride side by side along a main road ignoring the purpose built cycle lane because its not good enough.

There's no reason for cyclists to have insurance, they aren't going to injure passengers in a car if they hit it and the damage to the car would be minimal.
They absolutely should have insurance, there's plenty of scenarios where a cyclist could be responsible for an accident that results in costly damage to a car(s) and their injuries for the occupants. A cyclist jumping red lights and causing a car to swerve into another car/railing/whatever is a good example. How about a bike going down the side of your nice new car scratching the paintwork the whole way.

I just stick on the pavement. I'd rather not go on the road.

Hah! Today walking home in the rain I had a big umbrella out, one that covers a small pavement width (work freebie :p).

This cyclist riding along the opposite side like a dbag and there I am walking with my umbrella like a dbag too not paying attention to anything ahead. Out of nowhere I hear a "whoah whoahhhhh", look up and there he is, about to get an eye poked out :D

One of these days....

The "punishment" for cyclists should be to cut their saddle off the post with an angle grinder.....

....And weld a 12" stainless steel ruler into it's place, mounted on edge.

Nearly ran across a cyclist yesterday as I was pulling up to a red light, She jolted around me and went straight across me past the red lights. The law really should change.

You mean change the law to make it illegal to cycle through red lights?

The moral of the story is don't be a dbag.
