Punishment for cyclists?

The problem being if any of the above happen and anyone see's or theres CCTV then the number plate will identify the culprit.

That's a big IF as to whether you are covered by a CCTV camera where you were parked. If so, you have to go through the process of application to pay for the footage. Only then can you even work out whether the footage even shows what happened.

Cyclists can't be identified, they're using the road imho they should have some form of visible ID. No Id/Plate whichever and on the road should be a simple fine.

Nope, but if the crime is serious you can still ring the Police and give them a description and details of where you are and where they are heading. Just the same as anyone who doesn't stop during any other road accident.

I do appreciate that there are "sensible" cyclists that do have insurance should the need occur but I bets its a minority, wheres ALL cars are FORCED to have insurance/tax and also carry visible ID.

I think you will find its a greater number than you think. Anyone riding something that looks like a piece of rubbish, or they clearly look like the kind of person who causes trouble then yes, they likely don't have insurance. Anyone with a more expensive bicycle likely does because more than anything they need coverage incase it gets nicked.

I'd like to think that if a cyclist did damage my car in any way they would stop apologise and offer details if insured or details to contact once I have a quote for repair work but the attitude I see posted from many seems they'd wash their hands of it and ride off :(

Again though you are hypothesising on a situation that is pretty rare.

The last time I had a road traffic incident was when another motorist knocked my wing mirror off while I was sat in my car. I didn't see his number plate, so the only way I was able to make him pay was through being able to start my car and manage to chase after him. That shows to me that Motorists are just as likely to make off if they can think they can get away with it, even though they have visible identification. Just like how where the majority of minor damage occurs in Car Parks, its pretty rare that somebody will leave a note because they know they will get away with it.

Yeah they can, you can see them. Perhaps every person should have registration plates too so we can identify criminals too because they can't be caught without those plates :)

Think what he means is, if a police pulls over you in a car you have to show them your licence or prove you've got one within a certain amount of days , these cyclists should be obliging to hand over ID or Get a hi5 and a picture took off their face and hunted down.

I'll happily give the Police a high 5 if they pull me over for speeding on my bike. ;)

There are morons in both camps whether they be cyclists or drivers. There are more than a few of us here who belong to both and can see things from both perspectives. For those who endlessly complain about cyclists, try a morning commute on two wheels and come back and tell us that all your fellow car drivers where angels in disguise. I doubt you will.

I did once knock the wing mirror off of a car while filtering through traffic but then, if the passenger hadn't thrown a can out of the window (damn littering car passengers) and it hadn't wrapped around my front tyre, then I wouldn't have skidded into the car mirror. The only person complaining about paying for a replacement was the passenger, obviously trying to deflect her guilt over causing the whole fiasco in the first instance.

You could end up in a wooden box! leave home 10 minutes earlier maybe?

What route do you cycle? The front of my sprinter would love to meet you!:p

sounds like a threat on someone's person to me there...

wanting to hit them with a vehicle, attempted murder at the least?

Think you ought to take a look at your attitude buddy.

I too have been a user of both, I've even had them in a combined effort (motor-bike)

As someone who both drives a car and rides a bike regularly here are my thoughts:

1. Some cyclists are morons.

2. Some drivers are morons.

3. Bikes don't need mandatory insurance because they do far less damage. If a car hits a bike it totals the bike and probably causes significant damage to the rider. If a rider hits a car he might slightly scratch the paint. They should however still be liable for the damage they cause.

4. Running red lights is stupid whoever you are. However cyclists have much better peripheral vision and awareness (generally) than cars as they can hear the traffic noise around them better and see more clearly - hence occasionally trying to skip a light.

5. Bikes don't pay Vehicle Emissions Duty because they have no emissions (thought I'd pre-empt 'ROAD TAX BLAH BLAH BLAH')

6. People who like to cycle bikes are not peasants. People who like to drive cars are not eco destroying maniacs.

7. Cyclists are allowed to share the road - if you get stuck behind a slow one, bad luck. You have no more right to that road than they do.

8. Cycling should be encouraged so people are more healthy and waste less energy.

1. Agreed

2. Agreed

3. Yes they do LESS damage to the motor vehicle. It's still damage none the less though. Paying some form of insurance premium, knowing that it's going to affect their financial future if they aren't riding responsibly might force them to re-assess their behaviour.

I dare say a lot of car drivers would drive worse if they weren't paying for insurance.

4. Nonsense. There's no good reason for anyone (excluding emergency services) to run a red light. Saying that cyclists are sometimes ok because of a 'superior' awareness is like saying I'm allowed to do 60mph in a 30mph because I have bigger brakes on my car than normal.

Traffic control systems are in place for the safety of ALL road users.

just drive as fast as you can as close to the ******* on the bike s possible and hope the back draft pulls him off his bike. They would be cycling on grass if we didnt pay road tax so **** em

Yes, Cyclists don't own cars, or pay general taxes.

Just get an iPhone 5 and use iOS6 maps

Humans looove to complain.. personally ive got things to say about drivers but then again a lot of times i just shake my head at some cyclists too.. :-)

There are far more bad motorists on the road than bad cyclists.

I must confess that cyclists aren't a major annoyance to me whilst I'm out and about in my car. If a cyclist wants to risk his life jumping a red light then so be it, at the end of the day a collision with a vehicle is most likely going to be fatal for the cyclist and minor for the motorist. If that's a risk they are comfortable with then what the hell, let them go for it.

For a period of time I used to cycle to work and I can safely say cyclists have the short end of the stick. Motorists deliberately not leaving enough space to get past, pulling towards the pavement to block the way, Simply not seeing you on the road, hurling abuse usually followed by 'get on the pavement' etc.....

If everyone stopped treating their daily road use as a 'race' and chilled out a bit, we'd all be better off for it!

a) There's no such thing as road tax

b) The vast majority of cyclists also own a car

c) What happened to you to make you into this person? Show us on the doll where the cyclist touched you.

I am a cyclist purely for fitness. I go through red lights, when it's safe. I cut confront of cars, when it's safe. If i fall off doing it and my bike is rideable I'm not paying for ****. If I'm on a narrow road and your getting to close to me trying to pass I'll ride just close enough to the middle that you can't pass and slow down. I have a go pro in mounted on my helmet and seat post. Good luck claiming.
