Punishment for cyclists?

I think it's about time cyclists were forced to acknowledge that the roads are for cars. They can ride on the roads, but they have to promise to stick to the gutter and stay the hell out of the way. They also have to agree to have a bomb implanted into the base of their skull, attached to a GPS receiver - when the GPS receiver detects a speed of over 15mph, the bomb is armed. If the cyclist drops below 15mph, the bomb explodes, à la Speed. If they don't like it, they should get a car and sit in it like every normal human being does.

I was about to comment before I realised you were trolling :D

no to make it so that they can actually be caught by the systems in place for monitoring people who run red lights.

Lack of registration plate might be an issue :-)

If we want registration plates for bikes, we should staple some to horses asses as well - I see them running red lights all the time!

Oh, and screw going to work in the car, it'd take forever!

You mean change the law to make it illegal to cycle through red lights?

no need to change it!

As a cyclist and professional driver I hate to see either taking the law for granted, and to be truthful in the last 6years I have had more near misses with other vehicles than I have cyclists whilst driving and cycling! More ignorant drivers than cyclists by a long shot!

Whenever this thread pops up, I fully understand all the vitriol against Cyclists for breaking the Highway Code by jumping red lights and other misdemeanours, however just as many Motorists are guilty of similar. If I had a £1 for everytime I see a motorist carry on through a red light in London, or talking on their mobile phone, I'd soon be a millionaire.

What I don't get though is this argument that Cyclists need to be held accountable because they seem to be going around doing nothing but wrecking cars. That's complete nonsense as far as I see it, from the perspective of somebody who cycles and drives.

Firstly, in the vast majority of cases, when a car and a bicycle come into contact, it's the bicycle and cyclist that come off worse. In a more stationary situation, if the bicycle 'scrapped all the way' down a car, as some seem to be making out, then the cyclist would likely loose control of the bicycle and more than likely end up clipping the wing mirror, because if you were scrapping all the way along it, thats what you would end up hitting.

If that actually did happen, the Cyclist would pretty much be at a halt, so if they had damaged a car and didn't do anything about it and made off, then just ring the Police and give them a description.

Its things like this that we pay insurance for. Further to that, I'd add that many Cyclists do have insurance. Pretty much anyone with a half decent bike will have it insured and most policies offer 3rd party coverage of a few million for just a £1 more. I myself have something like coverage for up to £5 million if there was an issue.

I know people love their cars and want to keep them free from nicks and dents. I try to do the same. I however have never had a Cyclist scrape along my car. I have however come back to my car to find scratches and dinks from people opening doors into it and the odd stone chip from the road.

The idea that a car is like a magnet that just sucks Bicycles towards them and that the pedals being used to power the thing are going to rip the car to shreds is just silly.

Yawn yawn yawn.
There are more idiot car drivers than there are idiot cyclists, that's for sure..
Had one this very evening 100 yds from my home driveway.
The middle of an S bend on a country road and I come round the corner to find a car overtaking a cyclist, right slap bang in the middle of the blind bend.
So yes, I look at those car drivers and think they must be brain dead.

Some drivers are morons.

Some cyclists are morons.

However the attitude of some in this thread terrifies me. Yes, a lot of drivers have a poor attitude too but two wrongs do not make a right, and this kind of problem between the two parties will only stop when everyone agrees on the correct way to behave on the road.

Sorry but I don't pay my insurance for some muppet to damage my car and ride off without any form of recompense, only to then be deemed "at fault" as theres no evidence of other party to pay out of my own pocket for the damage and to lose any NCB I may have.

As a cyclist I can probably speak for a lot of us when I say that the MTB riding (I can say that now as I've just got a road bike :)) "it's a bike I can go anywhere innit" crew are the main culprits.

I reckon enforcing mandatory helmet laws would definitely help. A lot of the chavs and night ninjas that you see would rather walk than be seen in one, and they're 90% of the problem.

I'd never be dumb enough to run a red (ok, maybe the odd one at a pedestrian crossing when the ped has already crossed most of the way) because I understand that when on the road, I'm a vehicle, albeit a slower one.

Yet as I pointed out in my post, the above happens all the time when somebody opens their car door into your own when left in a Car Park. Or they knock off your wing mirror when it is parked at the side of the road, or somebody decides it would be fun to key your car, or you get a large stone chip, return to your car to find somebody has reversed and damaged your bumper etc. These are all common problems that very rarely have any recompense and are much more likely to happen than a Cyclist scrapping down a car and damaging it.

I've been driving fourteen years and have had the above happen plenty of times. I however have never had my car scrapped by a Cyclist and I live in London, nor do I know anybody else who has had their car damaged by a Cyclist, however I do know plenty who have lost a wing mirror while they were away from their car.

The problem being if any of the above happen and anyone see's or theres CCTV then the number plate will identify the culprit.

Cyclists can't be identified, they're using the road imho they should have some form of visible ID. No Id/Plate whichever and on the road should be a simple fine.

I do appreciate that there are "sensible" cyclists that do have insurance should the need occur but I bets its a minority, wheres ALL cars are FORCED to have insurance/tax and also carry visible ID.

Family members both cycle and have motorbikes so I always give way/enough room and make sure if I'm overtaking that people are aware that I'm there and no I don't randomly go around honking at people making them **** themselves lol :p

I'd like to think that if a cyclist did damage my car in any way they would stop apologise and offer details if insured or details to contact once I have a quote for repair work but the attitude I see posted from many seems they'd wash their hands of it and ride off :(
