Punk Rock

Really? Then why do I consistently hear people claiming other things. Why does Lydon insist that the Sex Pistols were never part of the 'Punk' movement? Why are people suggesting them as a punk band in this thread?

Because you don't get to pick your own genre, you get put where people put you, and people put them in the punk movement.

If Girls Aloud proclaimed they never were and never will be a pop band, it wouldn't make any difference.

Have you heard the Sex Pistols? They do NOT sound like any other punk band.

No they don't but Mohinder gave an answer I never thought of before : you don't get to pick your own genre.
The Pistols always thought of themselves as a rock n roll band, I thought of them as a heavy Hawkwind.

Column Matrix : Thats a great post above and I agree with everything you have said.
I was a massive fan when they first came out and looked forward to everything they did but always knew McLaren was talking BS.
He said they couldn't play but I saw them live twice and they were as tight as a gnats chuff with Matlock.
The only thing McLaren did was to get that idiot Vicious into the band and the rest was downhill.

Because despite the facts, they are still regarded as one of the first punk bands. The entire punk image comes directly from them.

This thread was created for people to say what they think punk is. Many people see them as being the epitome of the punk movement back then.

It's to be expected that Lydon would say they weren't part of the punk movement. But regardless of what he says, as has been mentioned, you don't get to pick what genre you're put in.

I would say they are a punk band. I can name at least three bands that have a heavy influence from them off the top of my head.

Just 3?

Oasis, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Joy Division, Madness, Tupac, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Libertines... The list literally does not stop.

Have you heard Steve Jones' radio show in LA? It isn't a coincidence how he manages to get the biggest stars from the entertainment industry to come on as guests. Infact if you listen to it half the time his guest usually ends up reversing roles and starts asking him questions about the Sex Pistols

The sad thing is is that the other three were still good even with Vicious in the band. I feel sorry for them when I watch the last few gigs and they have to somehow overcome not having a bass player and basically no soundchecks. Longhorns is still suprisingly good even though it is actually just Drums, Guitar and Vocals (Sid's Bass is completely unplugged). You can feel the frustration in their voices in their comments inbetween songs.

I first thought Rancid, The Unseen and Anti-Flag.

Thank you for a very interesting read Column Matrix.

Did you notice that, ironically, the person that uploaded that clip to YouTube describes the Pistols as "the definitive punk band"?

Yes I did but I always say this to people who have to insist that the Sex Pistols were Punk: If the Sex Pistols are punk then punk is JUST the Sex Pistols. They have almost nothing in common with other 'punk' bands. Yes they may have influenced lots of Punk bands but that doesn't mean they are too. The Sex Pistols managed to influence rap artists and bands like Massive Attack, it doesn't mean they are the same genre as them though?

Ironically the Pistols themselves were influenced by the artists Punk bands seem to hate so much. Lydon was heavily into Reggae, Dub and Psychedelic music, Jones was into various rock bands such as Boston, Journey, Roxy Music, The Who, Rubettes, and Matlock was massively into the Beatles and Abba...

Punk for me is The Clash, The Ramones, UK Subs, Sham 69

Post-punk such as Joy Division

American Hardcore such as Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys

More modern bands such as the Refused and perhaps early Offspring/Green Day before they went with a more commerical/softened sound

and of course more lately Gogol Bordello

I class Punk and Punk-Rock being different. Always have.

Punk is bands such as The Clash, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Misfits etc. The older stuff that started it all.

Punk-Rock is bands such as Rancid, Pennywise, Operation Ivy, Brain Failure, Lars Frederiksen and the ********. The newer generation, if you will!

Circle Takes the Square are superb. I'd like to mention Pg. 99 too.

Jets vs Sharks don't exist anymore, but a couple of them are in Attack! Vipers! and they are seriously superb.
