Insurance for my pug in the UK was not worthwhile in the end. We were with petplan and when we registered both dogs as expected they took the dog's medical history from their vet.

My pug had a history of scavenging, and had been to the vets for a mild upset stomach upset a couple of times. He was also slightly overweight.

The list of exclusions we got were ridiculous. In the end we decided to just put the money aside each month in case something happened.

I dont think I could ever put either of my dogs down if the bill was too large. I would find a way to pay for it, whatever the means.

You can but it doesn't solve anything and accidents happen, I don't imagine it would actually take a massive amount of force to damage a pups leg.

I still accidentally kick (although at 60kg odd and as tall as me stood on his hind legs he's big enough to take it) my dog sometimes because he's an idiot who likes to lie in doorways and generally in the way and then not move until you're trying to step over him does that make me a terrible person unfit to cohabitate with a dog?

No, but the OP did say they slammed the door on the pups leg. Should take more care around them.

In your case your Dog probably knows and accepts the risks of laying about in doorways

well an update .....

She has broken 2 toes. I went somewhere else as I think I'm at an expensive vet and someone recommended me another. She had an operation which was only a few hundred. The vet said she is still somehow extremely playful even coming out of the surgery and drowsy from Anaesthesia

Thank god. getting insurance now!

that's completely different a car is a car, a dog is a dog.

car can be left to rust and no one will care but a dog is like a human you gotta look after it, you gotta feed it and you gotta make sure it is in good hands if you can't take care of it.

so when you make the decision to get a dog you gotta consider a lot of things, never mind leaving it with people who clearly do not care for the dog.

The analogy worked fine, I'm aware that cars and dogs are rather different.

How was OP to know that their partner was going to shut their dogs paw in a door?

Very seriously consider your quote and whether you'd be better off just setting up a standing order into an ISA for the next few years. £25/month, for example, into an ISA is better than paying some insurance provider that you'll probably never need.

yes, true, i think in the puppy stage its better to have insurance though as if i did that from the start i wouldnt have much saved. Long term, i think yours is the better option.... so i'll switch to that after a while

Might be an idea to get a tether lead for the garden for the future as long as the lead is a bit shorter than the distance to the door.

What silly advice.

That's only £300 a year, vet bills can easily run into the thousands.

Wow. I love animals but even if insurance was paying that kind of money I would probably just put the poor animal to sleep. I've never been in that position so don't know for sure but that is my gut feeling.

Thats what happened in the end unfortunately. They never did figure out what was wrong either.
