Purchased Counterfeit Software

What makes you say it's not genuine? It could have been bought from outside the UK.

I don't see anything immediately noticable that says it is...

Looks OK to me, the key should be inside the packaging under the disc or on one of the cards included inside. MS have those types now that split when you open the disc.

I'm pretty sure it's fake. First off the strip windows just look wrong.

MANY businesses still operate all of their workstations on XP, and also pay for it.

OP: Just send it back. If you don't want to pay for Recorded Delivery, get a Certificate of Postage. These are free.

Thread got necro'd by fornowagain this bit ^^ is 18 months old.

I'm beginning to look forward to when you leave school and enter the real world.

I am thanks. You are clearly not.

Small business really have no need to purchase every copy legitamately.

Even when you move up to the bigger fish with MS Select Agreements, the numbers rarely correlate, meaning you always have some "unlicensed" copies.

So for someone to think about calling the police over an XP disc off ebay is pure unadulterated lols.

Somehow I think the police have better things to do like dealing with burglary, rapes and murders, than be chasing up some kid who sold a copied XP disc.

Perhaps they might be interested if the kid was masterminding a multimillion pound counterfeit operation, but lets be honest, he is not.

That's completely different to what you said, you asked if even businesses ever bother to pay for any XP licenses anymore.

Ok you got me, I exaggerated slightly.

Still, there are many small business that treat MS products as Freeware, and there is nothing wrong with that really.... If Bill Gates can afford to give away billions to charity, then MS pricing is evidently set a fraction high.

try and scan the barcode with a barcode scanner with your phone, or get someone that has one, see what comes up, i've purchased xp from a site which failied the validation, ms gave me a new serial to validate it as the one on my packaging had already been used!! as long as the OS installs and validates i wouldn't worry about the packaging too much

It really is that simple, The goods are in effect stolen and the seller can not lay claim to them. I would invite him to get the police involved, If he has made a dropshipping error then that will be apparent.

it would be STUPID to threaten someone when

1) he has your address
2) you DONT know his
3) has given you a full refund
4) it will ONLY cost a few quid to return the item
5) they stand to possibly loose a lot if you talk to the police
6) if brought via the bay he is possibly not even tracable by the police

just send the disk back... and DONT THREATEN HIM...

Well, I'd dispute that as would many others.

Im just tying to redress the balance of this thread.

Ok, the guy got a "fake" XP CD... its not a big deal. He got his money back and its all good.

All hes got to do is post it back to the guy and forget all about it.

Im sure there are more important things to worry about in the world, even though it seems an enormously stressful scenario for the OP.

Seriously though, I would have more of a conscience downloading XP and donating the £15 to a charity or something...

I know thats probably going to sound silly... but hey...!

ebay do take counterfeiting pretty seriously, they even had a thing about it not long ago.

If he sold via ebay then he can be tracked, ebay will pass his details on to authorities wen required.

If Paypal has refunded you then you don't have to return the item because you've filed a Paypal dispute for counterfeit items and Paypal has not told you to return the item.

Paypal will usually only refund you once you return the item and Paypal confirm receipt via the tracking number from Royal Mail.

Because this has not happened I am under the impression that Paypal has filed your case under counterfeit items and that the seller knows it and is asking for the disc back for whatever reason (finger prints?).

If the seller wants the disc back so badly then you can direct them to interparcel where they can book a collection and you won't have to spend a penny other than wrapping it in a jiffy bag with his address on.

Some people here are evidently reading from the start of the thread and not the part Fornowagain posted - as -BA- already pointed out the OP is 18+ months old!

^ Which of those is the fake - or are we meant to guess :p
