Q6600 G0 lapping thread.

Ok a very simple ? do I just go out and buy the finest snadpaper i can find like glass sandpaper or do I need to buy a special type ??

Sand side to side or in a round curcular motion ?

Looks like I might try this tomorrow on my TT120 to get started and then the CPU if I grow some ;)

idle temps on my B3 are 40-43-38-38, so 5c difference!

I'll be happy if they all go to 35c idle from HS lapping, otherwise I'll do the CPU!
Also means I can up the CPU from 3ghz to 3.2-3.4!

lapping kits are available, usually with a piece of glass for flatness, but any grades of paper are good 400 up to 1800/2000 (iirc).
methods vary, best to search here for "lapping" - I suppose, circles, Xs, etc. some with damp paper and so on. There's no shortage of threads, :).

My own preference is a circling cw/ccw, while watching a good dvd or 2. Most consistent advice is little pressure, and lots of patience, it can take a while.

To put this in simple terms, checking for myself and to help anyone else it is :

Plastic "cap" back onto the CPU
Duct tape around the edges of it
duct tape the sandpaper on a flat surface then rub CPU on top of this
apply light pressure with CPU/sandpaper
sand down until you see copper
brasso metal polish to get rid of swirls
clean thoroughly with Isopropyl Alcohol(?) using kitchen roll/cotton ear bud(?) until no dirt rubs off

Missed anything out or written anything wrong, just change it plase to help me an anyone else :)

For a lapping kit with glass you just duct tape the glass down to a flat surface, then duct tape the sandpaper on top of the glass :)

Picky I know but thought it might help some people having simple things cleared up !

some of you have missed the easiest method, well what i used anyways.

draw a cross on the cpu from corner to corner.

The sand away, do it with permanent marker so it doesnt rub off on the first pass lol.

The once thats all gone your sorted.

Also make sure you do it on a mirror or pane of glass.
