I will be fitting one on my system tonight. What is a safe/max Vcore for air cooling? I am using a Scythe something or other and 120mm fan

Also are average idle and load temperatures?

Depends on the VID for idle temps and max stable OC but then again every cpu is different so your max stable will most likely be different to what both my Q6600s were for example.

Temps for a G0 on air if the 120mm is running at say around 700rpm 40-45 degrees idle once overclocked (and vcore increased).

My last Q6600 preferred 3.3GHz max and the one before than 3.16GHz. I had a Freezer 7 Pro cooler on AS5.

Your numbers will vary because the rest of your system is different and your cpu will have different tolerances.

Thanks for info. VID is 1.325. I'll be happy enough if i can reach 3ghz

My housemates prebuilt median PC has a Q6600 in it, but a crap heatsink/fan. It reaches 60 on load when its at the default clock speed of 2.4ghz. Should i start to worry, say if mine gets to 75 or something?

I had my X2 3800+ chip up to 91c and had no problems with it

They run a bit warmer than the newer 775 chips and 60+ under load isn't anything major really.

A 1.325 VID Q6600 should easily reach 3GHz, mine was 1.375.

In fact I think it's safe to say every single Q6600 should be capable of 3GHz as long as your RAM isn't some generic stuff.

333x9 = 3GHz easy.

im running a q6600 G0 @ 3.3
my vcore is 1.4525
running 368 fsb
tuniq tower 120 cooler and i max out about 49 degrees on full load and idle just under 30 with the fan set to 1500 rpm

Its currently on 9 * 333. 1.5v in bios but cpuz shows 1.448v

Prime 95 has been running for the past 5 minutes and all 4 cores are between 48 - 54. When i try increasing the vcore a bit and FSB it restarts at 2.4ghz. I have been leaving memory along on 800mhz unlinked. What could i try to get it to 3.2? Whats 'exectute disable bit' and 'virtualisation' ?

Bit much on the vcore? Had 2 B3s and 4 G0s, none really needed more than 1.375V for 3.4Ghz, though i did hear to the end of the run the cores were getting crap.

Its not 1.5, its must be my motherboard with vdroop (?) as 1.5 shows 1.45. I have lowered it in bios to 1.45 and cpuz is now showing 1.392. Still ok at 3ghz. Will try for higher with same volts in a min

I find most 65nm chips get far too hot for air cooling when approaching 1.5Vcore. They are pretty robust. I seen threads where people use 1.5v on 45nm chips (on air)with no probs.
There is good evidence to suggest 1.6v-1.7v on 45nm running maxed out for months at a time with no damage.

What memory is it? I'm thinking not set to 1:1 it'll run past the PC6400 spec when over 333Mhz right? Might want to run 1:1 and tweak the timings if you want to go over 333MHz. What are you using to check temps? What cooling. I'm also thinking its rather cool for a Q6600with a high vcore on air ;)

Memory is 2 sets of 2 x 1GB OCZ 6400 Plat series DDR2 800. Wont unlinked just limit the memory to 800mhz (its rated to 810 i think at 2.1v)

Temps i'm using coretemp, cooler is a Scythe and 120mm akasa fan. You are right, temps were low because i had prime on large fft instead of small. With 1.5volts bios (1.448 in cpuz) small FFT took temps to 70 then crashed shortly after. Now ive lowered the volts its ok

I tried for 3100mhz with the same volts and just hangs on the motherboard logo screen.

Do i need to change something on the momory?

+1

You will need to run your chip on as high a multi as possible and your mem will need to be relaxed if you go to higher FSB's. Try not to leave settings on auto or you will have probs trying to find what is stopping you getting higher speeds later.

15mins of prime 95 small fft - 59 - 66 in coretemp. Will get a pic of the current memory settings

Havent got a clue about these settings. Do I just put them up to 6-6-6-16 and leave the bottom stuff alone, or change bottom stuff too?

Are you running all 4 cores in Prime95? Those temps are sound if you are still using 1.5 Vcore at 3GHz.
You'll do well to read up a bit around the forums if you want a serious overclock. I've found a wealth of info about this mobo and how to set it up around the net.

Generally you need faster RAM for higher O/C's than PC6400.
Leave your mem on 1:1 (slowest speed) till you find your cpu max first, leave them at 5-5-5-15 for now. Do your testing until the mem limits you then try loosening it and volting the NB up a notch - it will take some faffing about to find the sweet spot.
