Thing is, it's not in Mercedes style to do something illegal and hope they can get away with it by cheating the test. That's completely something RBR would do, and why Horner is running around projecting such cheating on his rivals. Mercedes might exploit loopholes in the technical regulations, but they are not going to full on cheat, knowing that the kickback on the Mercedes brand if they got caught would be catastrophic.

He's one of a couple of drivers who's driven here before in a junior formula. Which probably helps...

Well that is the same with everyone on the grid so by that rationale we can't say Lewis is faster than anyone else other than his teammate.

Perez has less points and is often the lowest positioned of the drivers in the top two teams. I can't see him winning a race outright, whereas we have seen Bottas do that and beat Lewis fair and square on occasion.
 
Did you only just start watching F1? It's not a spec formula with everyone in similar equipment.

Some teams have better cars. It's the way of F1. You can only strictly compare a driver to his team mate, and by interpolation to their previous team mates taking into account the overall performance of the car.

No been watching it since at least 1991. What's your point?

I think Bottas is a better and faster driver then Perez. Just as most might think Lewis is a faster and better driver than Stroll.

I think you can't tell. Perez is driving a car designed around someone else's preference in his first season in the team. It's the same problem as Schumacher in the Benetton - no-one could get close to him because of the car characteristics, and he had some very decent team mates. Closest of the lot was Brundle and he got unceremoniously dumped. Bet Flav regretted that in hindsight.

It's worth remembering that Perez is very much a compliant number 2 in a way that Bottas isn't.

Bottas is effectively the 2 due to being slower but ultimately you can see he's more interested in his own race.

Perez by contrast is very much playing the team role and a good number of his races are managed with the aim to benefit Verstappen, to the extent they even pitted him from a point scoring position at Silverstone just to rob Hamilton of a fastest lap point.
 
Odds have just switched to make LH favourite for the championship (albeit still close to 50-50).

Will be interesting to see if this pace gap is still there at the end of the session.
