QNAP or Synology?

What I'm saying is..

If it's NAS to TV via HDMI, the NAS CPU will be doing the work. (nas will 'play' the file)
If it's NAS to TV via network, then typically the TV CPU will be doing the work. (unless you pick transcoding)

No worries, I understood the first time. :)

Hmmm, I'm sure I had to switch transcoding on on plex running on a synology before I could AirPlay it to my Apple TV... And I know one of them struggles with some files, and I know the Apple TV will take the same files fine streaming over AirPlay from iTunes.

You 100% sure transcoding is not required? I don't know that much about this streaming, but the above made me think it was required sometimes.

Interesting thread. I've been looking at QNAP and Synology NAS boxes for a while but can't really justify the price.

I do like the look of that new one though Richdog.

I've a 400 series... but it lacks 4K and a fancy remote :S heh

Don't want to jinx it but its been an absolute trooper for a few years now.

Also setup IIRC a 419 for a friend's business and its been running maintenance free for longer than mine.

Rather than backing one up to the other each night you can have them in synology high availability mode which runs them active/passive with real time mirroring if the active NAS fails the second takes over automatically.

Worth considering if you are replacing it with another Synology.

Bit late replying but I have mine setup with realtime USB replication to an external drive - very slight performance hit but means I can walk away with a USB drive with an upto date (hopefully) copy of the data and plug it straight into another machine if something fails (I also have scheduled backups to another device to mitigate any real time failures that might corrupt data on the live disc(s)).

I think its the majority of Qnap that do HDMI not many Synology. Just one thing though if your looking to use it via HDMI they do not do 24fps via HDMI i was looking at the TS 251+ for the very reason but went again'st it

UI has changed a fair bit on the QNAPs over the years (Synology as well mind) - Synology has some neat features but I keep gravitating back to the QNAPs as the UI is just more intuitive for me personally - I can find what I'm looking for without having to think about it while Synology I often end up digging - though I've not tried their latest incarnation of the UI.

I've switched to Plex from Kodi now and I'm looking at moving to a QNAP box. A lot more oompf than Synology, if I'm downloading via sab, repairing and transcoding, my 415+ struggles.
