QUAD Core @ OCUK

it won't be mainstream for many years and i doubt software developers will be making applications and games for quad core anytime soon. its not a massive improvement over core 2 duo

And the steam system survey shows most users running very average systems so valve wont make anything which require quad cores to run well so it will just mean the have 200FPS instead of 100FPS :(

Interesting link thanks, ive seen bits of the interview on various sites but never read the whole article.

Though this ..

Gabe mentioned that even if a million people upgrade to quad-core CPUs in a year (which Valve believes is not beyond the realm of possibility given its hardware surveys) those numbers weren't enough to pay for putting a box in retail stores that would require this hardware for best performance

..seems to agree with what i said above.

it would

if valve were planning on making a completely new game from the ground up, as opposed to releasing a patch to accelerate existing aspects of the game.

it may only be accelerating physics, AI etc.. but its proof that games are shifting in the right direction, and also, note that the SMP patch for source will be released before episode 2. Pretty soon then :)

hmmmm the new qx6700 is a lot more than I though it would be, I was guessing it would be same price roughly as the x6800 and the x6800 would drop in price. Not so sure I can afford a quad core now

q6600 will be much cheaper ive heard. :)

this is a total waste imho. most people arnt getting the use out of dual core chips yet nevermind quad! where are all these multithreaded apps and games that were meant to take advantage of dual core?? there's hardly any of them.
Very narrow minded view you have there.
There are quite a few programs that use more than one core. I know I myself am commonly using 2 pieces of software that are multithreaded. (3dsmax and 7zip)
Having a quad core chip would rendering much quicker in max, and by extremely usefull.
So whilst many have absolutely no use for such power, there are people in the world who will use such chips for something more than E-Penis+1 benchmarks.

If only I could afford one....

What programs use 3 or 4 cores?

I can almost say for certain that 3DSMax does.
The fact that it can be set up to render over a network of machines suggests to me its more than capable of splitting it up between more than 2 processes.
I have not tested whether it uses 4 cores myself, as I only have 2.

^7zip like he mentioned, mental ray and just about any other rendering program out there, photoshop, anything with SSE, video encoding(?)

EDIT: Beaten.Yes it uses 4, pink floyd. I've heard 8 being used aswell

Thanks madness, must have missed that thread.
