QUAD Core @ OCUK

Very true - however not every app likes to be minimised etc, a few old burner aps really hate it for example and can make coasters because of only this I have found and as stated above struggling could be caused by memory or hdd's caching to keep up not necessarily the cpu's fault

I'd agree that a system struggling will be a combination of saturating bandwidth on the buses between CPU cores, memory & hard storage/optical storage units etc. However I can't really avoid that with my system as I'm running 2gb of overclocked RAM & all my drives are SATA. I have no IDE drives whatsoever. So there is not much I can upgrade to increase throughput. However I'm sure the southbridge will still be a limiting factor at times on my mobo.
So the only worthwhile upgrade is to a new mobo with increased throughput & double the cores to share the workload ;)

But surely you will still have the same problem if you double the number of cores as the south bridge will still be the problem

The only advantage of quad cores i can see is multithreaded apps where the cpu is talking direct with the ram eliminating the slower components from the equation.

Would be a different mobo that I would have to purchase though to fit a quad core which could well have an improved southbridge compared to my current mobo.

People with 2.6Ghz Athlon 64's are still doing extremely well in games and I think dual core hasn't really launched in software yet either. Quad core isn't needed really but it will be in the future. If your a gamer, I'd stick with dual core. How many true multi-threaded games are out right now?. How much will the quad cores be worth when it's mainstream and just about everything has a patch to use multi-threading?. Certainly not near £800 anyway.

I think it's a good idea but useless for now in my eyes. For the people who do buy them and have a good use for them I hope you enjoy the extra power. :D

Recode entire DVD to DVD.
Then follow the wizard.

Pick a dual layer 9 DVD so it gets compressed a lot.

I want dual pass and quality selected.

Tell me how long, what compression %, and how many frames rendered a second.

People asked what applications use all 4 cores. Well, incredibly boring I know, but my dual dual core (i.e. quad) Opteron runs 24/7 with all 4 cores fully loaded, with chess programs that in many cases will us up to 8 cores if you have them :) My next purchase may well be dual Quad core Xeons

Also - some chess programs come in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and there is one example where the 64-bit exe gives a 70% speed-up. Yes you read that right, 70%. Many question the value of 64-bit, well there is one example where it benefits hugely.

Chess is however a very snmall market segment....

chess programs?

hehe great stuff, yeah like a computer chess game where you battle against the CPU, I remember regularly visiting the science museum as a young teenager when they had one of the first chess programs set-up on a computer, spent hours standing there pitting my chess skills against the 10MHz cpu (or whatever it would have been back in 1982 :) )
