Quake

One of my favourite, if not my favourite game of all time. Including the two expansions.

I refuse to play with any other kind of engine, and I've tried most of them. Vanilla or nothing.

Absolutely love Quake, always have it installed on every machine I ever own, even phones :D Can't say I like graphical mods though, glquake all the way, as God himself* intended. Dammit I am going to be up til 2 again tonight

*Carmack, not the imaginary kind

Quake is supposed to be dark and gritty - Those shots look nice but way to bright and 'fancy' for quake.

VESA 320x200 in lowest brightness mode was how its supposed to be played!

anyone notice how it's balls to the wall harder than anything they bring out nowadays?

It's no surprise really. Games like Quake only appealed to the more hardcore, nerdy gamer back in the 90's and as such catered for them. These days gaming is targeted at near enough everyone and as such the playing field has been leveled so even the most inept player will be able to play with out too much trouble. Why make a hard to play game when you can make an interactive movie that almost plays itself? It's clear which one will sell and make millions.

Sad but true :(

Yeah not a fan of the mods that make it all shiny and sometimes the high-res textures just serve to emphasise the blocky geometry. I've always played it with a simple Open GL renderer with a few small lighting tweaks and texture filtering tweaks and thats it.

It's very dark using the Darkplaces engine, that's why I used the grenade launcher to add some 'light' :p

That bright room with the water is also bright on the standard engine.

And no one played it in 320x200! Even back in the day I ran it at 640x480 :p

Yeh, maybe Doom was 320x200 - I remember games running slow in 640x480 so had to drop to 640x400 to make them a bit more playable. or some random res like 512x384??

I didn't know about the darkplaces mod and HiRes textures - thanks for the links fellas. This'll be vying for attention over the easter weekend against Bioshock infinite.

Whoever posted that Quake is ID software's best game is absolutely spot on. The sequels went off in a direction that lost what is an amazing concept and feel... a Modern/Medieval/hell mix.

When I bought Quake a while ago on steam it gives me huge headaches and a slight nausea - I've never had that from any games before. Hopefully the mods may remedy that.

I remember running Quake modded / maxed to the hilt, and my 4870X2 struggling just a little at times to maintain a steady, smooth frame rate. Mind you, I very much expect it was only addressing one graphics core, so I guess it wasn't that much of a surprise.

Played it the other day, was getting 1400 fps :). Beats the 20 i must have got on my p100 with 4 mb of ram and some wonky graphics card.. I remember getting the demo on pc gamer mag back in the day..

I miss the excitement of new games being launched, i was really excited for Aliens: colonial marines but it flopped.. We're constantly bombarded with cr4p and its a job in itself sorting the wheat from the chaff - a job i dont have time for..

Anyone play Quake Live? Played it a bit a few years ago, is it still going strong?

It's still going. Wouldn't say strong, I drop in every now and then but there is rarely a server playing my preferred game type (Rail Insta). Maybe a couple of hundred players online in western Europe I guess in the evening

Quakelive is the same thing so no reason to have nquake really.

 What are you on about?
