Queen Elizabeth II has passed away - keep posts civil and respectful

I believe the figures quoted are the number of viewers, and not the number of devices in use? To be honest I have never really understood how they come by such figures
like political polling - calling... Iplayer had 250K people during Edinburgh procession ... and beeb must have the peaks

queueing presumably you can leave the queue .. and if there are several of you a couple stay in the queue whilst the others sleep in a nearby hotel ? unless there is a periodic awol check.

I believe that they are creating a wristband system. Just something I heard last night on TV.

Whilst being in favour of the Monarchy as a form of head of state, queueing all those miles on Londons hard pavements is an act of respect too far for my knees. I am sure that many will and Londons thousands of tourists will be in there too.

Doesn't sound like it, once you're in you're in and you better find somewhere to bin anything you might need to survive 20+ hours on your feet because you can't take anything into the palace.

TV ratings are compiled daily by the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board. BARB recruits 12,000 people across 5,100 households representative of the overall UK viewing public. As well as demography and geography the panel is selected according to platform, whether the TV set or via desktop, laptop or tablet. The devices themselves log data about who in the household is viewing and what they are watching. BARB computers rush the figures out to the broadcasters within hours.

It is usually done by connecting a device to the Television set of several viewers' houses to scale responses. This device telecasts a specific code during the program, which records the duration and the show that a viewer watches on a particular day. The standard is taken for a 30-day period, which gives the viewership standing for the particular channel. These estimates are interpreted as a representation from the overall TV viewers in different geographical and demographic divisions. Then a TRP is calculated. ‘Target Rating Points’ quantify the entire measured points attained by an advertisement or campaign among targeted individuals within a larger population.

The Nielsen ratings are calculated based on a sample of 40,000 homes and about 100,000 people that are demographically representative of the population as a whole.

Ratings are essentially percentile representation of the viewership, measuring the division of a given society covering households, adults from the age group 18 to 49, or women 25 to 54 who are watching a particular show. Adults from ages 18 to 49 are the primary demographic by which advertisement rates are set for entertainment programming, so it's most commonly reported. One point in a distinct demographic is equivalent to 1.28 million people. Thus a 2.0 rating for a TV Show means that about 2 percent of people in that age range, approximately 2.56 million people, watched the show.

I am sure other countries have their own way of doing this too. Unless this Nielsen rating thing is a world wide thing.

Thank god they are keeping the queue to the south of the river.

RIP and all that but this whole situation is verging on the ridiculous, particularly the closures on Monday. I’ll have had my lifetime fill of the monarchy by the end of this as I suspect will many others much younger than me.
Here here. Bring on the mundane and relentlessly boring "status quo" ASAP. Let our lives be filled with consistently and stability, till we die.

Yeah it's all a bit too much. Half expecting us to be Tom's "you will be sad and you will mourn". My partner was actually going to centre parks this weekend for a hen do. She was leaving the Sunday anyway but now they all have to leave a day early.

I feel the last week of events have just solidified people's opinions though. If you weren't keen on the idea of monarchy before, this week will ensure you're really not a fan. If you were. It seems the love has only risen.
Pretty much every person I've spoken to old and young are indifferent to the Royal Family (why wouldn't they be frankly) but ultimately they think the entire ordeal and longevity of this is a farce and it's raising questions about the forced nature of all of this, I've never heard the word "paying respects" thrown around so much - it's all a giant mourning competition with real life consequences. I have a friend with a chronic disease who has had a long waiting (and getting urgent) op cancelled because of this - you have to question, why?

the viewing figures are just educated guesses really aren't they? they monitor so many people from different areas/backgrounds etc then a

I'm sure there's a Family Guy or Simpsons episode where they steal all the boxes that monitor what you're watching and have them all tuned to the programs/channels they want to see!

e: ahh just seen dlockers post!

I'm in two minds. It is an event of massive national significance. However also the BBC particularly are milking it for all it's worth. I suppose there will be some people who do want to watch 24/7 coverage of the movements of the Queen's coffin though, and the BBC being the national broadcaster should cater to those people?

Centre Parks attempt to close for the day (now partially u-turned) is very silly though. If staff want to watch the event, have it on the big screen in the communal area and close the bars/pools for a few hours.

And hospitals closing - yeah that's going way too far. But I guess they are stuck - the staff will demand the bank holiday like everyone else. Would have been better for the funeral to be on a Saturday probably.

Surgeon called in sick a week in advance.

A very large amount of people want the day off despite your sample of people around you not being interested.

I've got the day off and although there is an option to work it's going to be sad and lonely work since 99% of everyone else will be having a snoop on the ceremony or otherwise enjoying themselves with their day off.
