Has anyone tried bigscreen cinema on a VR headset? Wondered how good it was.
Tried it on the Cv1. Slightly too blurry for my liking unless watching cartoony things then it was alright.
On the Rift S it's much better, almost perfect but not quite. It's definitely clear enough to enjoy watch a movie with it. I'd imagine anything above this level would be excellent for big screen.

Refresh rate?

Is it going to use same lenses as Rift S? As they are the better ones AFAIK, since you get little/no glare like is supposed to be apparent on the Index. And things look clearer on the S than the Quest.

So, basically is it a good Rift S replacement or too early to tell?

Up to 120hz has been rumoured, but likely to be 90hz. Lenses are alleged to have a wider FOV, and three IPD settings.

If Oculus Link peforms better on this device it could be a good Rift S replacement. However PC headsets like the G2 or even the Index may have a sharper image than Quest 2 when linked to PC, as the feed isn't compressed. However the reduction in SDE over the original Quest and the Rift S could be huge.

@VincentHanna We’ll find out more in 2 days at Facebook connect. Will be interesting to see what they have to show on link... in theory the XR2 is far more capable for video decoding so the stream can be significantly higher quality. It’s also lighter than quest which will go a long way towards fixing the comfort argument vs PCVR headsets.

Who knows, maybe they even have a wireless link option!

Given Connect is immininent I’d suggest waiting a couple of days to see what the full details are before deciding.

Personally I think the RiftS is dead, it was already the unloved stepchild to the Quest and the Quest 2 will sign its death warrant.

Thanks

Sounds like Quest 2 will be the best option though, and hopefully cheaper.

If this device lands for £299/$299 then Facebook has effectively won the VR race. No-one can come anywhere near to producing a device with those specs, with inside-out tracking as good, and with a large, mature software library, at that price.

Maybe the only competitor could be a PSVR2, but I can't see Sony being able to compete with that spec at that price. Might force Sony to up their game, as otherwise PSVR will suffer as people migrate to Oculus.

Considering this is a cable free vr headset, powered by what looks to be a very impressive chip, it has to make the others sit up and take notice if the price is indeed £299.

It makes everything else look grossly over priced when factoring in the gpu card to power it.

Yeah I now will need to see the Quest 2 and G2 side by side to decide. I wanted a good PCVR headset and was going to keep the Quest 1 for messing about on and when my neice and nephew visit. But now if the Quest 2 is very good I could be back to a single headset for both.

I think at $299 they have to be taking a hit... In my opinion this is why they had that move to requiring Facebook login, this is being subsidised by data collection as per normal Facebook modus operandi. As usual the benefits of soft locking you into the oculus store for mobile content also makes subsidising the hardware more beneficial. Other manufacturers don’t have these advantages (except perhaps valve with steam VR) and simply won’t be able to compete price for spec wise if I were to guess.

Anyway, Facebook evils aside I think where quest 2 will leave quest really looking useless is in the ridiculous AI performance of XR2. If you ask me this goes hand in hand with the AI based up sampling Facebook reality labs showed off a few months ago (a bit like DLSS if you like), which will allow the quest to run far more visually demanding mobile games at low resolution and AI upsample. Total game changer (literally!) if I’m right.

Based on what we know it still probably won’t be up to G2 standards for visuals, and definitely not even in the same ballpark for audio. The G2 is 2160x2160 per eye at 90hz, supposedly this quest is going to be around 1800x1900 or that region per eye (don’t know if that’s rgb stripe or pentile yet, but I’d guess the former) at an unknown refresh rate...

being mobile and having to include the gubbins and batteries, it’s also a pretty safe bet that it will be heavier and less comfortable for longer gaming sessions.

It will be very interesting to see what they have done to link with the new capabilities of XR2, I would expect the quality to be massively improved, but it will still most likely be a compressed video stream. A dedicated wireless link could be a big selling point.

I think this could be phenomenal, but I’d be confident making a bet that the G2 will still rule The roost for seated PCVR which is my main interest.

That's very true.

It also depends on the lenses, which are an uknown quantity on both the Quest 2 and the G2. (HP are apparently upgrading the G2 lenses, and reviewers haven't seen those yet).

But it's likely the G2 will be the king of seated VR for the forseeable future, partly because it's a direct connection and not a compressed video stream.
