Quest 2 Virtual Desktop Performance Thread

Really? You sure? Not sure if I perhaps described it correctly.
Its actually not microstutters but a latency jump.
Or actually it could be both.
Basically after about a min or so.... the latency increases to 50 or 60 (which is not massive by any means) and the fps drops to 50 or 60 fps.

Is this what you are referring to? And what is your source may I ask?
(thanks for the headsup).

On further investigation, I think you are right... it seems to be more about dropped FPS than latency.... I really wonder why???

Anyone experiencing this?

Everybody who has 3xxx card is experiencing this. It's a problem with the Nvidia drivers since the release of the 3xxx cards. It's listed in the release notes of every driver since.

It affects Oculus games for some people too. Users who have rolled back to earlier drivers said it solved the problem for them. (Me, for example) Owners of the 3xxx cards can't roll back.

I am only guessing here, but, it probably doesn't affect enough Oculus games for it to be entered into the release notes.

Ah really? Damn ok thanks melmac.
I thought you mentioned that it affects 3XXX users? so how did some users roll back if owners of 3XX cant roll back?
(Is it really the case you cant roll back?)

Thanks folks, and can I just confirm the phenomenon you are experiencing.
Its a kind of drop in FPS/stutter/latency (sometimes difficult to put a finger on it), once every minute or so?

And I assume this is not limited to wireless VR but wired (link) ?

I'm getting some very big lag spikes in modded Skyrim VR on my 3090 that I didn't get on the 1080ti. Possibly this could be the same issue. I'm hoping the next driver fixes it. The main reason I got a 3090 was to play VR at higher refresh rates, detail and supersampling.

Most other games seem fine - HL Alyx for example, and playing Lone Echo via Revive.

This is on the Valve Index.

Im honestly not sure if this is the problem.

I just tried running many games from my current wifi setup (not the PC).
Speed is slower admitedly (866 or 400 ish).
And the latency is now up to 40-50.
But the game doesnt drop latency or stutter fps.

Just doesnt make sense... the onboard wifi 6 at 1200 is BUTTERY smooth and bam random time frame in, it sutters for like 5 seconds.

Ive tried to reduce the speed, faf around with the settings, change driers. Nothing.

Any thoughts?

On board wifi is probably your issue. The creator of virtual desktop says that onboard wifi is not as good as a router, even if it's wifi 6 etc. Basically a router is designed to be a hub of sending and returning, it's a specialist piece of equipment, that onboard wifi etc cannot replicate. At least, that's as much as I've understood when I've read the more thorough explanations.

Hmm fair comment Unseul.

But it runs absolutely gorgeous execpt for a stutter every few half a minute to minute.... sometimes the intervals are random.
Just doesnt make sense!

Im currently running using a Unifi Access point to support my Wifi in the house which is connected to a Super Hub 2 Virgin Media router.

I take it that the 5GHz radio in the SH2 is pants? :)

So if I need a new router, do I simply connect it up to my existing router?

Wouldnt USB Wifi 6 adaptors be easier to create a hot spot?

Hang on... could I just connect the router DIRECTLY to my motherboard if I have two ethernet sockets?

Yes, buy a new router and plug your PC straight into it. Dedicate it for your Quest 2 only, no need for internet access either really.

Guy Godin consistently states that a PC hotspot isn't as good. My guess is that whatever software etc that's running a PC software is simply not as good as a dedicated router, and every now and then needs more ram, or doesn't get the CPU access it needed at that moment etc etc which causes spikes/lags etc.

You speak sense Unseul, thanks bud!

Any recommendations? I dont splurging out on the router to make sure I get the best performance.

No idea! Wifi 6, since the quest 2 can handle it. People here have had the cheap honor one, works ok at short range, but they've said it's got really poor range if you want to use it for your house in general. I think there's a youtube video or two especially testing wifi 6 routers for quest 2.

Cheers bud. Ive gone with a TPLink AX1800. See how I get on :)

If its as good as what I had before except for the stuttering, back goes the Oculus Link Cable honestly speaking! Especially with the Elite battery strap.
