Hello,

I'm going to get a Quest 2 (coming from a Rift CV1), Does anyone know at this stage if one of the cheap WiFi6 routers will work with the Quest? I'm thinking Honor Router 3 as this is £30-40 cheaper than the official cable!

Cheers,

Yeah it's set up as an access point which is just a drop down menu option... basically the modem/main router are in the house and an ethernet cable runs to the man cave, goes into the Honor and then acts as a wireless access point and switch, man cave pc is plugged into it with wifi.

Interface is pretty simple but functional, haven't had any issues with it so far and the network has been reliable but I haven't really asked much of it.

Cheers that's good to know... Hopefully it'll connect to a Quest 2 with WiFi 6 speed.

No, connect the new router to your PC via a cable, connect quest to new router via wireless, don't connect new router to old router, leave PC connected to old router via wireless

Quest doesn't need internet connection when being used with virtual desktop

Hello All,

I'm unsure regarding Networking and have built up the following (when I say unsure, I mean I'm sure there is a better way of Networking the house). The image shows my Home Network all connected via Cat 7 (I know but it was only slightly more than Cat 6 for what I needed).

Further to the original post, I'd like to use the Quest 2 wirelessly in a different room than the Game PC, I did think I'd be able to connect the Honor 3 router directly to the Sky router and use a repeater, but it seems this is a bad idea, as there is only one cable running between the floors what's the best way to connect the Quest 2 wirelessly to the Game PC? The Game PC is in the sig has no inbuilt WiFi, furthermore the low powered PC acting as a server is on 24/7 running Plex to the whole house etc.

Any idea's?

Set up Virtual PC for the first time last night, wireless to Quest 2 all on default (as I'm not sure what I'm doing!)

PC (ground floor) -- switch (ground floor) -- sky router (1st floor) -- sky router (1st floor) wireless dedicated 5G -- Quest 2 (same room)

Played Alyx last night and it was superb, I have a Honor 3 on the way but as is not sure I need it.

Again, just to stress this was all set to default so not sure if that's the reason it worked so well.

I even set it all up when I was on the Ground floor, Virtual Desktop was displaying ~850mb and ~20ms (just on desktop)

Hello All,

My messing about and findings:

PC is downstairs connected, I want to play the Quest 2 upstairs wirelessly

After messing about this weekend, I think I've come up with acceptable settings:

Game PC - Switch - Router - Honor 3 (bridge mode, dedicated separate 5G SSID)- Wireless 5G to Quest 2
(Honor 3 is also connected to the Sky Router for the internet (WAN port))

This gives me 1200mb connection and latency 28-30ms in BeatSaber.

The below has approx the same latency but a 880mb connection (from memory, might be 860mb)
Game PC - Switch - Sky Router - Wireless 5G to Quest 2

Assume I'm better sticking with the higher connection given the latency is the same?

Games seem to play smooth to my eyes and look fantastic, Alyxa in particular obviously looks and plays superb.

I was worried about going via the switch downstairs but given little choice without another cable, but happy with the result so far...out of interest what latency's are people getting?

Cheers,

Yeah, stick to whichever connection gives you the lowest latency. Try a few difference games.

What are your settings in Virtual desktop? Your Latency in Beat Saber is pretty good. What's it like in Alyx?

Hi,

Not sure which settings you're after, but I've changed:
Under Settings (Virtual Desktop)
VR Graphic Quality to High
FPS to 90
VR bitrate jumps about but 104 Mbps is the highest I've seen.

The rest are on the default.

Does that give you what you need, what should these be? (I've little to no idea!)

Yeah, thanks, you are using the "automatically set bitrate" option in the Streamer menu? If I use 104Mbs my latency tanks!!

What's your Latency like in Alyx?

My misses is trying to get through a door with a multi-tool and a globe, one of the puzzles, the latency has dropped to ~55, still very playable (she's not great in VR and I don't know how I can view the latency while I'm in a "action" section!

It's still very playable...how does that compare to you and anyone else who's tried it?

On the other thread talking about Virtual desktop performance people seem to be getting 33ms and lower.

If it's perfectly playable then no point in changing anything. You could try enabling sliced encoding if you do notice some lag.

Cheers, I'll have a play over the coming week and see if I can hit 30ish, although as you say, it's perfectly playable (to me) now so I'm in no rush.

I think direct from the Sky Router may have less latency, do you know what (if any) the difference between ~800 and odd vs 1200mb connection speed would be and how this would manifest itself?

Thanks for your knowledge so far, much appreciated!

Ok, supposing if you were trying to do wired on the cheap, would the headset and router and any other essentials, take you up to the cost of a G2?

Not sure how much a G2 is, bur
Quest 2 £299
Elite Headstrap £50

If required, Router £49

So still under £400...guessing that's a lot cheaper than the C2...

Are you using the Honor 3 for more than just the Quest?

The best one to connect to is the one with fastest Wifi. There is no difference really between the connection speeds as the Virtual desktop connection tops out at 150Mbs.

Nope, dedicated 5G on the Honor to just the Quest, same as the separate 5G on the Sky router (diff individual SSIDs)

I'm fine with the basic headstrap, haven't felt that uncomfortable with it. Elite may be better but I'd not say it's essential. I'm waiting to see a bigger range of 3rd party options and reviews.

You will need a cable though. Doesn't have to be the official one however. So another ~£20? You don't need a new router for wired. The router would be for wireless, in which case you don't need the cable ( and maybe not the new router depending on your circumstances).

Completely agree, it is fine with the supplied headstrap. However, if anyone else uses the Quest 2 it's a pain to keep altering the fit, whereas the Elite strap is a doddle to change. Given it's mobile I'll be taking it to family and friends (virus permitting!) as it's good fun watching others, in a "normal" year it'd be a brilliant Xmas plaything for all the family.

So anyone here actually running the Honor 3 for the quest?
My current router does a decent job but I get a few hitches as its downstairs to me and cant be brought up.

Stuck deciding between the Honor 3 or a TP-link AX10.

Yep, I actually bought two for £80 from the Chinese Bay, one is dedicated for the Quest (5G) not had any problems but I think the Sky router (5G dedicated) is on par with it, connection isn't as good according to virtual desktop, 1200 vs 860, but latency is about the same 30ms in Beatsaber.

Both Honor 3's are in Bridge mode (I'm in a three story house, so stuck the other on the top floor - different SSID).

For £40 I'd have no complaints.

Cheers,

I purchased one direct form the honor store. Needed a new router as I was still running a n66u.
Router is great for the price.
Connects to the quest via WiFi6 and I get around 28ms latency when streaming games via VD so happy with that.

How is your set up wired, are you PC direct to the Honor 3?

Cheers,

I'm expecting my honor 3 router today. Just wanted to check how I should connect it.
Currently I have an 8 port 1gbe switch to my pc which connects to virgin hub and a Asus router for WiFi .
Should I just make the honor an access point and connect it to the switch? Or is it best to go directly from my pc to the honor? my PC has WiFi 6 and two ethernet ports 10gbe and 2.5gbe.aswell.
thanks

People say it's best to go direct if you can.

I physically can't due to my set-up. I therefore go:

PC - Switch - Honor 3 - 5G to Quest 2
Bridge mode, dedicated 5G
(Honor 3 is also directly connected to my Sky router for the internet.)

With this I get a latency of ~30ms with BeatSaber and ~40ms with Alyx, which on paper isn't the best, but perfectly playable to me.

if you already have a decent wifi setup then the gains from wifi6 are marginal at best - the main thing wifi6 brings is support for more concurrent devices, which isn't really the use case for the quest with VD

Just to back you up, I bought a Honor 3 in preparation for the Quest 2, as I didn't think the supplied Sky router would be up to the job. However, having tried both I can't tell any real world difference between them.

Cheers,
