Quest 3 owners etc

Had a play with a Quest 2 yesterday on DCS, made me feel a bit disorientated, probably should have gone in a bit softer but loaded it up, dropped into DCS and started buzzing about at tree level in a TF-51, once I started chucking it around it felt weird..
Then did a gun fight with a Tomcat in an SU33, I won and found it a lot easier to maintain situational awareness.

Oddly though, couldn't get the sound to come out through the headset..

I'll have a few more goes over the week and then see if I wanna buy the 3, it did take me a while to get the headset right where I needed it to be, but I understand that the 3 has flat lenses rather than the same style as the 2?

It has pancake lenses, which means the sweetspot is almost the full lense, as oppose to an area in the middle, vast improvement.

Sims are a tough way to go into VR, flight sims especially, best advice is stop when you feel ill, build your tolerance, rather than push through and start associating VR with sickness.

A fan blowing in your face, ginger before you start are two common methods used to try and stop it a bit.

I just managed to grab a quest 3 128gb used on vinted for just £98 - hopefully it's all good but I thought its worth the gamble at that price. I will finally be retiring my quest 1 - I might trade it at cex for something they still give you £80 in vouchers for them.
Does it come with controllers? That's insanely cheap for a working model.

Even without controllers you could buy some quest pro controllers to setup with, and you're still getting a cheap deal.

Edit looking at vinted I see a couple there for that price. One has a photo of a quest 2 box in one of the pictures. Very suspicious in my mind. Still, could be a bargain.

Thanks, that could add to....

Over at hotdeals someone suggested that I would need a longer cable if used as a link, which I intend it for. The PC would be right next to where we would be placed. Do you see merit in that..?

Also the right angle connection being preferred.

So I'm guessing around a 5m with a right angled connection.

If so, any ideas..?

Thanks

If you're using it for Sims, that's absolutely fine, if you plan on doing more active things, it may be a little on the short side, but I'd strongly recommend using wireless for more active games anyway, so you can have proper freedom.

Thanks, my Asus AX88U supports WiFi 6 and should be reasonable enough to use then as a wireless device. With that cable, perhaps as backup / alternative options. But one wit ha right angled connector as it exits the headset.
I'm guessing that wireless or wired the bandwidth offered will display a similar experience..?

Wireless needs to be tweaked a bit more I believe, but you can get similar results with it.

If you already own it on steam can you now get the meta version or is it only for new purchases?

You will need to buy again, it's not cross platform.

I assume that Steam Link only works with Steam games?

So, given I have Beat Saber on Oculus (or Meta as it now is) to play that I'll either need to install it on the headset, be connected by a cable, or use Air link instead?

Edit: That said, if the best experience is going to be by having Beat Saber on Steam, I won't begrudge re-buying it given how much fun I've had out of it over the years.

Best experience will probably be standalone actually, since it will have the least delay, but it's slightly trickier to modify.

You know, these stories of returns etc, if u bought the product from somewhere like Argos, Amazon, or OC, the onus is on the place you paid your money to to refund or exchange. I've noticed some of them try to send you to the manufacturer (note not OC or Amazon, but Argos did with me) instead of refunding or exchanging the item themselves when there's a problem, afaik uk consumer law states the place you pay your cash has responsibility to sort u out.

First 12 months I think comes down to whoever sold you the device, after that, the rest of the warranty is on the manufacuror. I've had some good experiences with meta support before. Needed a bit of patience and to go through the steps they asked first, but they aren't unreasonable steps to ask.

Well the rattling seems to have diasapeared so going to see how it goes. Tried a few demos and Steam link and have to say very impressed so far. Steam link gave me a warning about not using over wifi but it ran ok. Im on VM 1gig with wifi 6e. I plugged headset into one of my usb ports on my pc however the battery is still going down? I thought this would keep it charged? What paid/free games or experiences on steam or meta are worth getting? I know Half Life Alyx is and thats on my hitlist. Ive got Walkabout mini golf so far.

The USB typically won't supply enough power to also charge the headset whilst sending data. Think you can get special USB splitter type things that also plug into the wall to supply more power.

Personally I prefer wireless and a powerbank on the back to act as a counterweight anyway.

What type of games do you like?

Monday evenings, 8pm, Walkabout Golf, private game password = OCUK

That's the social group gaming night, usually a good laugh, if you check the thread you can see if it's still the plan, next week is a new course, so it'll almost definitely be walkabout golf :D.

Thanks for the invite. I like games like half life, survival, driving, puzzle, adventure.. i'll try anything really in VR. So much to choose from on Meta and Steam.

Check to see if you have a trial period for Meta Plus (think that's what it's called), it's the subscription service, it gives 2 different games per week/month but importantly, also has a large catalogue of games to just play. Great way to try a load of different stuff.

So I installed Meta plus 6 month trial and installed Red Matter, Green Hell and Fruit Ninja. Red Matter seems a great game, lot of wow moments and just seems very well done. Green Hell seems a bit meh but I'll persevere and F Ninja is a lot of fun I can play with my girlfriend. So good shout Unseul. :)

Plus another great thing is so far I haven't experienced any VR sickness. I think it's because I'm mostly using teleport movement in stuff I've tried so far.

I'd reckon that Walkabout mini golf is a half decent way to build your VR legs, in flight mode. Start off with a low movement speed, and make sure you're 100% OK, then start to increase it.

Township tale is a game a few of us bought a while back, and I'm thinking about trying again, seeing how many updates they've done, but it's another with smooth movement options that could be a good way to get into it. Take it slow, build up, and quit if you start to feel at all nauseous. Careful with driving and flight sims, as that's a quick way to push it too hard :D

It's a screen that's at most a couple of inches from your face. You'll be able to see pixels, but once you get into a game, that should be less of an issue.

I've not tried steamlink, but mostly use VD, it has quite a few settings, but I don't play with it too much.

Some will just work, some will need fiddling etc, different people seem to have different experiences too (perhaps tolerance for slightly lower performance etc).

As for the suggestion that Meta is trying to kill off pcvr, that's basically nonsense in my mind. Yes, they're pushing standalone because that's where they have a walled garden, but I've not felt (Since owning the q2 on release) that PCVR was made deliberately difficult. Never owned a rift etc, but from what I've read, they could often take a load of fiddling around to get going. Truth is, meta has done more for VR, and in turn, PCVR, than anyone else at this stage, VR is now genuinely in the mainstream in terms of recognition.

I've asked that before, but your not allowed to post codes on the forum. People snipe them and forum members don't get them, so it's a no no I'm afraid

How is someone going to snipe a referral though? The poster would still get the referral? The next person can still use the link?

Could we skirt the restrictions a bit? A thread where everyone posts a list of the games they have, it grows into a large list. People take the top name for the game they want, DM them, and once referred, repost the list, but with the person who just gave the referral now on the bottom.

That way the names get rotated, no actual link is posted, but we help each other out?

I'd suggest running it as stock to start with, then decide what you actually need, rather than just going out and buying stuff because that's what everyone else recommended, try it, then buy stuff, that's what I did..

This is good advice.

If you have a power bank, I'd suggest some velcro cable ties or hair bands, and connect it to the back of the quest strap, longer play time and counterweight for comfort.
