Quest 3 owners etc

Hi folks,

anyone mind keeping me right on the quest 3 please?
Just got one for my daughter for christmas, got no idea about these and never even used VR.
Did some googling/youtube of setup etc so I know my way around that but also saw some videos about returning because of faulty charging cycles and dead pixels.

Anything in particular to look out for? Apart from update the thing, fully charge and take a look for brightness difference and dead pixels in each lens?

Saw another post on here about the BOBOVR C2 Carry Case, so I'll grab that.
Are there any lens protectors?
My daughter is a bit scatty, hardly looks after a pair of shoes or closes a door. So anything else you could advise to protect the thing, insurance?
I'd really appreciate the help.

Thank you.

She needs to keep the lenses away from direct sunlight. They act as a magnifying glass and burn the screens causing permanent damage.

I added the rubber skullcap attachment I used on my q2, to the back of my 3, with some foam wrapped around it. With a powerbank hanging off the back, it's pretty comfortable. I suspect a 3rd party might be able to improve it further, but not by enough that it's going to bother me, once I'm playing I don't notice it too much. I will say, a new facial interface would be nice.

Just had a hand controller update, and an app message stating that if I sign up to quest emails I get 20% off my next game purchase.

20%? Seems a bit stingy seeing as you can just ask for a 25% off referral for most games.

I'd be keeping the Quest 2 as I originally bought it for my son, although he doesn't really play it much. The Quest 3 would be just for me, but I'd need to look at how things work with the current games I have and if they can be shared or transferred.

They can be shared. I would recommend creating an account for your son, or wife etc. Add them to the q2 as a secondary account, and enable App Sharing on the main account. You can use the q3 with your main account too.

If you want to take advantage of the £23 free referral credit, you will need to disconnect your q2 from your meta account (doable through the phone app I believe). And then use the referral when activating the q3. Fairly sure that's the order of events to get it to work.

That's great, thanks for the advice! I'm still debating if I really need the Quest 3 but I had another play last night in PC World and those pancake lenses really are so much better. The passthrough does look awesome compared to the Quest 2 (obviously! lol) but I would have thought it to be even better. But perhaps I'm being a little harsh and expecting too much - like DSLR quality lol

Passthrough for me is normally good enough to use my phone to see messages. Once you're playing a game in passthrough though, your focus is on the game, not the surroundings, so it's more than immersive enough (at least in my opinion).

Is anyone having issues with their Quest 3 draining the battery whilst it's powered off? WHen I shut it down the battery is generally dead a couple of days later? Is this normal?

I have the Official Meta Elite Battery Strap so I'm wondering if that's the culprint? Or is there an update/etc setting which could be causing this issue?

The latest update has moved the off button, it's now sleep, and you have to go to further options to turn off.

There's things you can do to help yourself. No vehicle Sims for one.

Have some ginger, fan blowing on you to keep cool, snap turning, teleport or slow moving. Swing your arms and walk your feet when moving.

Key point is stop if you start to feel nauseous. Give it time before you come back.

I nabbed a second hand meta 2 for myself, but the passthrough is absolute potato. I'll probably take it back and go for a 3, as the passthrough is a real selling point for me.
On that though, is the definition on the meta 3 passthrough good enough to check my watch and phone messages?
Thanks!

In good light I can read phone messages. It's not crystal clear, but definitely good enough. Not sure you could read a watch face, would depend on the size of the face I guess.

wow, that's unlucky. I have tested 13 Quest 3's since xmas. Yes, 13. Family and friends bought them for their kids and I am their goto tech guy. They were all fine. No audio issues, no flicker at 120hz, no dead pixels or dirt or anything like that. Apart from very faint Mura, all the headsets were perfect.

I think what's happening is that you are getting refurbished units as replacements not a new headset. Try another refund but this time demand a new headset not a refurbished one. It might take longer for them to send you out a replacement though.
Or get a refund, and order a new one from Amazon etc.

Considering my Q3 drains down when totally powered off when left connected to my PC I would say you need one of the aftermarket cables that are powered via the wall socket. I have such a cable for when I take my PC/Q3 over to my mates huge man cave but not had a chance to test over christmas.

For me at least the Q3 doesn't last as long in any situation stand alone or PCVR compared to the Q2. Not surprising as it's more powerful.

My q3 has lasted about as long in simple standalone games as my q2 did. Though now I basically only ever play with it plugged into a powerbank, it acts as a counterweight as well as extra power.

Whilst I'm here, I've noticed that the Quest 3 strains my eyes pretty quickly. Never had this problem on the Quest 2.

I've got the IPD set at max and I can still slightly see the inner parts of both lenses, which seems strange because I ain't no Samuel Jackson. I'll maybe try different IPD values and look at the general settings as well. Brightness is halfway.

You should just measure your ipd, and set it to that.

Did you play the First Encounters game/tech demo that comes with the Quest 3? If not, go play it. It's a glimpse into what's possible with MR.
It really does help you realise what is doable, with things interacting with furniture etc. You also realise that you don't pay that much attention to the surroundings as opposed to the game.

Reading your phone will depend on lighting, and also the brightness setting on your phone.

For me messages are readable, but I'm not going to try reading and writing emails.

But again, when you're playing in passthrough, your focus is never really on your surroundings.

Do you reckon we will ever get to the point where we won't have to draw out boundaries and objects with augmented reality and it will be able to identify what things are automatically? Or is that asking a little too much processing power?

You can already use it to automatically scan your area if you want for a playspace, but at the same time I still want to be able to setup my own playspace since I don't always want to use the full area.

Hello, so I'm thinking about getting one of these quest things... It's probably been asked many times in this thread but it's late and I don't want to read 98 pages of things..
Anyway my question is.. Is the quest 3 worth the extra cost over the 2?
I'll be using it on PC for flight sims (MSFS, IL2) and racing (Assetto) and it seems to have its own built in games like virtual golf so I'll do that too.
I'll buy whatever the great collective minds of OCUK tell me XX

Depends on your finances really. It is significantly better, but the 2 is still a solid device.

My usual advice is buy a second hand q2, preferably with upgraded headstrap, for around £150-170, see if you enjoy vr. If the q2 is enough, great, if not you can sell it for little loss, and get the 3.
