Questions - Diesel engine and transmission / gearbox reliability circa 2014-2019 -BMW - Mercedes - Audi ( on small hatchback or coupe models)

My old 120 the start stop used to be used my previous owner..when I had it..the starter motor failed..I had to get it replaced with a new bosch one .
And what mileage was it on at that point?

It can and does happen. . may be a luck thing though
It can and does happen on cars without start/stop though. Starter Motors didn't just start failing because cars had Start/Stop added.

I guess section 75 credit card protection would be useless after a period of time anyway
You can claim up to 6 years after purchase. It shouldn't matter much as it's just an absolute worst case thing to have available to you. Buying Approved used gives you a decent warranty, and if you don't get anywhere with that (e.g. if the dealer is the stumbling block) you've the option to escalate to BMW UK.

I bought an AUC Mini and had to go down the Section 75 route because they didn't find fault with the clutch/flywheel when there clearly was. So I contacted the credit card company and got it resolved that way. It was actually very much in my favour because in the end I got back the entire payment I put on the card - £4,500!!

Yeh unfortunately I forgot to use my credit card for part payment . Bit late now. I had the card in my wallet but completely forgot and the balance was done via bank transfer . Oh well. It has the BMW Warrenty

Really impressed with how smooth it drives and how it feels

Was thinking wonder if I can ask them if they take a £200 credit card payment from me then refund £200 of my bank transfer so I get the section 75..

Although not sure if it's worth it tbh

To answer your starter motor question on my old BMW 120d.. it started developing symptoms of not. Engauging properly around 99k I think and then complete failure at 105k where it wouldn't start at all.

I had a new bosch starter motor fitted.

I can maybe see the benefits if your stopping at lights now and again but in stop start traffic it would be pain this feature

So likely just a normal age/mileage related failure rather than anything specific to start/stop then :)

Why is it a pain? - it's literally transparent. In a modern Auto it's probably even more seamless.

No idea how because it was all coded by the previous owner but mine seems to retain a persistent memory of stop/start selection per driving mode, so I have it on in Eco, off in Comfort and off in Sport. So if i'm in stop start gridlock type traffic, I put the car in eco so it doesn't sit chugging through fuel just to move a few feet every so often.

Sport is off by default, and eco is on by default I believe.

Some better pics :)

And yes its in eco by default . So far modes I have tried it in, is eco, sport, and eco plus. .

The eco has the efficiency dynamics thing,. The eco plus has a slightly different dash view where it has uses braking power to produce electricity. On the dash when I'm in eco pro there is a diesel range icon and a plus symbol, then a value. Not sure what it's telling me I'll work it out. I assume something like being in eco pro you have accumulated 0.3miles range ?

I have connected the car to my bmw app now...

I did some photocopies of the old style BMW service manual so I have blank sheets. Iv noted what's the service history and stuck it in my own little log book. Even though its digital I like a manual written copy also.

It's annoying that when people sell you cars you have no invoices for receipts for stuff because of GDPR.. I keep everything usually.

Even though its In idrive that still doesn't really tell and prove anything. It's just a programmable data and no evidence of which garage done it , where the parts invoices are

This one has had its EGR cooler replaced under Warrenty before which shows up on BMWs printed history audit for the car.

I guess I'll trust it though and I'll just keep everything I get done on it including digital and hard copies of invoices
