Questions on racism

Hopefully the show will be cancelled, the contestants put down, and the producers shot. That's me being fairly civil too.

Not really. Its still an interesting point. Like my friends mother would tell him to that **** off or at least turn it down when he listens to it. But would hit the roof if she heard him say it in front of her. Is the word racist, or just merely offensive??

So, answering my own question. It may appear you are racist (to other people) if you sing along to the rap song even if your not.

Its a strange paradox to me.

I am not racist for buying the album.
I am not racist for listening to the album.
I appear to others to be racist for singing along to it.

You're not racist for singing along to it. This is really simple.... I cannot believe a discussion has been formed out of it. The word has racist connotations if used in a particular sense, it is also offensive to certain people, but anyone who gets offended when you sing along to the song because of the racist aspect, rather than the just plainly offensive aspect is an idiot. How could you be considered racist for singing along to a song that a black person wrote in the first place?

IMO there are no racist 'words'. Being racist towards someone is an intention, not a specific word. It is possible to use perfectly innocent everyday words to say something racist and hurtful, but the very same sentence used with a different intention could be completely innocent.

For example, is calling someone 'black' racist? I think that the answer can be both yes and no. I could refer to someone as black because I am trying to describe them to someone, it is simply a description in this case, but I could also refer to someone as black as a derogatory term (not that I would) if that was my intention. Obviously, the same argument applies for the word 'white'.

From the sun

Below is the full transcript of the incident, which was not screened on the live feed.

Emily: (referring to Charley dancing/pushing her hips forward) You pushing it out you n*****.

Nicky: (shocked laughter) Em, I can't believe you said that.

Charley: You are in trouble.

Emily: Don't make a big thing out of it then. I was joking.

Charley: I know you were… but that's some serious ****, sorry.

Emily: Why?

Charley: Oh my god. I'm not even saying it.

Nicky: Just don't talk about it anymore.

Emily: I was joking.

Charley: Do you know how many viewers would watch that?

Nicky: Okay, don't make a big deal out of it.

Charley: Fancy you saying that. I can't believe you said that.

Emily: Somebody has already used that word in this house.

Charley: No way. (Pause) Yeah, me. I'm a n*****.

So it looks like it was not used in the context of singing along to a song.

No swearing

So she just blurted out "You ******" ?
What the hell wasn't she thinking? Surely they were told over and over and over to avoid anything that anyone anywhere could construe as even vaguely racist....
Dappy bint.

So when is Charley going to be kicked out for saying ******? Or is it a case of it is only racist if whites use the so-called racist terms?

I'm glad this has happened, it shows the huge gulf between so called "equality" between blacks and whites in this country.

What about all the gangster rap with the word ****** in the lyrics are they to be banned, if not why not?

I'm reminded of the time a wrestler dropped the n-bomb, watch his reaction. :D

Sorry dude, dodgy ads on there

I can understand Emily getting kicked out for saying it - it sounds like the way she said it was rather tactless. However, I'm hearing that Charlie was trying to justify that it's okay for "them" to say it. I don't really approve of this either, and I bet her grandparents don't either. Maybe when it's used in parody it's fine though e.g. to make fun of the word. And of course when you're just talking about the word.

Based on that transcript I see nothing wrong. I assume that the black girl was doing those "booty" moves that black girls do (like beyonce)?

In that case, Emily was acting as if she was one of Charley's black friends, getting into the spirit of the thing. If Emily had dark skin no-one would have batted an eyelid.

Dr King said it best, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

The makers of BB ought to be ashamed of themselves.

|You become a racist when it's used in a derogative way.

I had a very good black mate, and we used to trade insults. Especially funny walking down the road with everyone going did he just say that :D.

He went on to say that real racism is when you won't even sit down and eat dinner with a person of another colour...

you mean like not integrating with them? keeping themselves apart? and eating and socializing with people only of the same colour/culture?

;)

its racist if i call a black person black boy. yet its ok for a black person to call me white boy. WHY? its racist towards white people now adays its stupid

indeed.

It's pretty simple, non blacks shouldn't use the word ****** around black people.

Why would you want to say it anyway? And of course rapping along to a hip hop tune is not racist. I don't think Emily is a racist anyway, just a stupid idiot for saying something so offensive.

How can you be kicked out for being racists to your own race? Charley is black, Emily is white, so Emily shouldn't be using the word ******.

Is it not offensive for me to call a Jew a kike? Im not Jewish, and even if I heard other Jew's referring to eachother I still wouldn't use the word.

and "****" is deemed offensive by a lot of people, that's why you shouldn't say it. Basically saying you should be free to call people "pakis" is just ignorance and lack of consideration. I also hate it when people say "chinK", it just ain't needed.

I agree you should not be racist towards anyone (malicious intent).

However, lets say you have a Pakistani rapper using the word **** in his song. Is it ok for me to buy, listen to, but it's taboo for me to sing along with it because I am not Pakistani myself?

I am just trying to understand the logic in the above.

this thread pops up like once a month, getting tired of the same crap being spoken

It is good that we can speak about such issues rather than try and sweep them under the carpet and pretend they don't exist.

I don't think anyone in this thread is condoning racism.

Is it the word itself that is racist? If it is - then it should be banned no matter who speaks it. If it is the intent behind the word then why shouldn't a white person be able say it? I am not being racist if I tell you what NWA stands. I am being racist if use the N word as an insult. Surely racism is all about intent and not the word itself.
