Would a 51 plate Golf GTI be a step up from my current 53 plate Ford Focus 'Ink' (Basically a Zetec with heated seats)?

Golf has 70k miles on it and the bloke is the only owner, and he's asking £3100.
My Focus is Cat D and done 25k miles.

i cant see it being a step up, older golf, which is a generation behind suspension wise, god knows what engine and it has more miles

id keep the focus, even though it has stupidly low miles

Doh, I'm a dummy!
Golf - 2 litre, 115, Petrol, Manual, 99-03
Focus - 1.6, dunno the power, Petrol, Manual

The reason I ask is that it would only cost an extra 200 quid to insure and I'm slightly bored of the Focus. It would be my second car since passing last November but if it isn't worth it then I'll tell the guy I'm not interested :)

Cheers for your help.

trust me, avoid the 2.0 mk4 like the plague

a sensible mileage 1.8t could be a decent change to make (test drive it first though), otherwise just dont bother with the 2.0 mk4

In terms of engines, the Golf would still be a small step up (10.2s to 60 instead of 11) but tbh is it really worth increasing your insurance 'upgrading' to an older car with barely more performance and probably not as many features?

No, it doesn't seem worth it. I was looking at other cars like the MX5 but my belly hits the steering wheel on that :)
