Quick Question - Step up?

and that would be what exactly? :p

There have been numerous advancements in efficiency in the last 10 years. I cannot understand how you could even begin to deny this. On average, cars are more economical now than at any point in the past. Compare the combined fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of a 10 year old Golf diesel with a brand new Golf bluemotion and see for yourself.

progress that is not relayed onto the road in 'normal circumstances'.

Really?

I dunno. I'm rubbish at haggling, I feel cheeky!

List all the bad points and make a stupidly low offer.

They will reply with an offer lower than the original price but still not low enough.

You come in about at the middle marker until you agree on a price.

Rinse and repeat.

I think he's telling you that I don't have a Focus any more and I'm looking at a different Golf now as just a 2.0 car rather than a GTI.

Biohazard knows this. He isn't saying "don't get the Golf because you've got a Focus". He's saying "You were bored of a Focus before you stacked it and this isn't going to be any better, ergo if you don't stack this one you will get bored again quickly".

I think Gaygle is having the reading fail.

I asked if he was going to do anything about the tax and he said no. What happens when they just say no?

You say "Well I'm not going to take it then" and walk off. ;)

*Edit* Thought I would go into a bit more detail.

The way you approached that question was extremely passive. It sounds like "Please sir, would you mind awfully reducing the price of this because I've asked so nicely". No one in their right mind is going to drop the price just because you've asked nicely.

You've got to be aggressive (like aggressive driving, not like a tit). Take control of the situation and have some initiative. Say "I don't really think it's worth £xxxx due to the damage and the lack of Tax. I'll give you £xxxxx (lower price) for it". Then see what they say. If they really want to sell it they will go for it, or at least offer you somewhere in the middle.

Don't be a soft touch or they will take advantage. The worst thing that can happen is they say no and you say "then I don't want it" and walk off.

You insist on him taxing it.

Considering to tax it you are going to need to prove you own it (new owners slip) that you are insured on it and that it has an MOT.

So that means going to his house, buying it, getting insurance and waiting days for it to come through the post, then going to tax it and finally picking it up, where as he could pop to the local post office and do it right now.

You pretty much always get it included in price.

Sounds like he walked all over you.

Who cares if it was a fair price, why are you trying to do him favours? Get as much money off it as possible.

All 2.0 Golf Mk4's (Except the Estate I think?) in the UK are GTI's.

Even as a 'normal 2.0 car' its dire. 114bhp from a 2.0, seriously, why bother?

I brought it home already
Ah well, at least it was 900 quid cheaper than my Focus!

Hope you didn't drive past any ANPR cameras or plod, could easily get a fine in the post?

As it's not declared SORN or taxed I believe the DVLA can come and turn it into a crushed can if they want to.

My car was £50k cheaper than a brand new M5, doesn't suddenly mean I got a fantastic deal.

There are very few cases when a car is actually 'priced to sell' and 95% of the time you are almost expected to haggle and the owner will have a figure in mind as to what they will take.

I'm going to tax it today after work. I don't know what an ANPR camera is, but there were some average speed cameras on the M4 I think? There was also a police car behind me for about half a mile too :(

If I'm really unhappy with dropping £2600 on this car, at the very least I should be able to pass it on for about £3000 and make a few pence on it?

What makes you think that? You say it was priced fairly so another owner on the log book (for such a short time) is only going to hurt it's value, and the next person is certainly going to want to haggle on it.

+ the fact that everyone was telling him not to do it. How are you going to be able to face us again?... How are you going to be able to face yourself. :p

I thought it was cheap for what it is actually, which a couple of people here kind of agreed. What do you think about the cost?
Gonna get £250 for my old car. Better than a kick in the teeth!

Thank you. My mate said it's probably for the best to get the cambelt done anyway as you never know what the previous owners were like. He is probably trying to get a quick buck from me though!

No I know I can read, but the point still stands even if he still has the focus or not.. it bored him.. and I don't think a golf would fill the hole. But its up to him isn't it.

:p it wasn't overrun either. ;) Not bad for a 20 year old designed four pot.

Tbh, they have not moved mountains with efficiency. Small steps, perhaps. Its pretty hard to achieve the the mpg stated from some manufacturers though.
