I am running my cpu at stock with tuniq tower & some artic silver 5, temps when ilde is around 50 degrees  i'm thinking this could be due to my psu(850w enermax) fan blowing down on the cpu? also it is sort of in a tight space but surely temps shouldn't be this high?

I would have thought the fan in the PSU would intake the air.

Not sure on the temp sorry, Im sure some one else can help you. :)

I've read quite a lot of CPU/Cooler/Water Cooling reviews using Quads that mention idle temps in the high 40's/50 so maybe they are a bit toasty?

There are four cores ticking away in there afterall?

I think I read, like the Core2's, that they throttle at 85c and shut down at 90 ish.

I'll try and find one of the links, assuming they've got no competitors on them!

Ok i set everything back to stock to compare temps

Stock

Running prime95 for a few min on all 4 cores... this is with the cpu and 120 extreme lapped and i also inserted a bit of foam behind the backplate to give a bit more pressure and stop it twisting about.... i think before i lapped mine it idled at 50 also come to think of it.

those temps are fine for air cooled mate.

Even at stock, also as you have said they dont really go up that much when clocked.

Im running my xeon 3210 2.13 @3.5ghz under water and its 36-40 idle across the 4 cores. under load it hits 52-54c on the cores.

As long as its nice and stable the temps are not to be too worried about.

Re the psu, that fan which is internal should be sucking not blowing. if its blowing air into your case you have problems.

Just wondering if the heatspreader could be raised slightly at cores 1&2 or concave in some complicated way seeing as core 0&3 are hotter than the other two.

But don't worry those temps are totally fine.

Well it seems to be stable at moment, not had any problems. i'll try it under load later

Whats that under?

I dont get anywhere near those temps with my pa120.3, D5, aquaextreme .....

around 50 idle and around 60-70'c load at around 3.4 with 1.30 ish volts.

Running a P5K Deluxe.
