QX6700...High Temps

I dont believe what Ive just read on another forum...

Guy with the same issues as us, heat. Check out what he wrote!

btw guys , I HAVE SOLVED MY PROBLEM AFTER COUNTLESS DAYS OF TRYING AND TRYING...

I am so happy right , that I'll have to post back again to talk about this...

I removed the retaining clips from the motherboard !!
Simple right !
I took photos and tried to view the retaining clips from different angles all along and it still seemed like the Processor was higher then the retaining clips..
Yeah , the mb retaining clips were'nt out right flat or straight from it's corners..
But it did have an effect on making my temps horribly out of order..

after removing the retaining clips , I realised it was really simple and wasn't damaging to the retainers in any way , I can now swap it back in easily if I want..
BUT I cant say this enough , I tried placing blades to see if the retainer wasn't the cause of the problem..
Non of that helped catching the problem , till I actully tried taking the retainer clips out..

my temps although the AC's on , are @ 39 now thats like a 11C decrease !
With my processor OC'ed @ 3.4Ghz !
I still have to check my temps with the AC off..

Please if you think your having problems with your temps make sure you test this out there's no harm in trying this out , it's perfectly safe..

BTW , I did lapped my processor/QX and the cooler /CM Eclipse , my temps didn't or couldn't go below 51c idle with the retainers on.
Im using the VX Typhoon atm , although I haven't lapped the Typhoon , so there's even more hope for me now..

I simply took the retainers off , tried the typhoon again on my Lapped Processor..
Temps @ 39 with the AC on through..
So with the AC off there could be a 5c increase , thats still 10 to 15C cooler then 55-60 !!

YES , BY RETAINERS I MEAN THE CLIP ON THE MOTHERBOARD THAT HOLDS THE PROCESSOR

I've just emailed him to see exactly what he means by the retainers, and I've asked to see his photos. If it what I think it is, the metal bit that holds the processor down, I might give this a try...

Just done the removal of the clip from the mobo.

Its seems to make a difference, but only by a few degrees in IDLE. My normal average core temp is 44.5 degrees (add all 4 then divide by 4) with 1.35v and 3.2ghz. Now, after the removal it is 41.5 degrees. So it makes a slight difference. This may improve as I've had to apply a new layer of AS5, so maybe I'll see a drop in temps over the next few day, but I suspect by only 1-3 degrees.

Now, under LOAD, I see a great improvement. Average core temp before removal was 62 degrees. This is now 54 degrees, thats a saving of 8 degrees!!! (using Quad Prime for 10 minutes, as per my previous tests in this thread)

I would say this is worth trying. You might not see too much of an improvement at IDLE, but LOAD definately! My chip seems to be more stable as a result...

I think i might give this a try on the weekend, is the ratainer easy to fit back in place?

Yeah, dead easy. Just clip it back into place.

BTW, it was bl00dy difficult fitting the Amanda without the retainer holding the processor in place. I had to get my wife to help out!

I hope a few of you try this, then we can see if it makes a difference across the board. :) theres nothing to say that this wont help the C2D aswell, so perhaps a few dual core owners could try it too to shave a few degrees off? :)
